Polly Samson. This is how a Cure memoir should be! This category only includes cookies that ensures basic functionalities and security features of the website. As a young fan I read the first serious Cure biography, Ten Imaginary Years , and never gained this perspective, despite that many details overlap. The book had me reaching for some tissues when he recalls how he wrote Robert an apology letter and repaired their friendship, and how years down the road in , he reunited with his former bandmates for a couple shows in Australia, performing their first three albums. Cured tells the harrowing and unforgettable story of his crash-and-burn, recovery, and rebirth. We have recently updated our Privacy Policy. He now feels very present in the music I hear, in a way he always but I never acknowledged. Oct 20, Peter rated it really liked it Shelves: non-fiction. I think it's a sign of just how connected I was to The Cure at one time that I am tangentially acquainted with a couple of the people Lol thanks in the acknowledgements. Escape the Present with These 24 Historical Romances. They gave their first gig 43 years ago and, in fact, the only member of the original band who is the current member is the heart, the brain, and the face of the band, Robert Smith, an extraordinary musician, unconventional singer, main composer and writer of lyrics. But the stunning success of the band, notably in Europe and USA, contrasts with the stunning slide of Tolhurst. This seminal s band is experiencing a spectacular renaissance in recent years - they are touring all over the world and giving two-to-three-hour concerts that leave thousands and thousands of enthusiastic fans stunned that their music still sounds fresh, that the vocalist's voice has not diminished after all those years, and that The Cure's melodies, rhythms, and instrumentations still make people happy. You can almost picture Robert Smith in Superman cape fending off evil at every turn. The music of The Cure was not only accessible but also deeply subversive, challenging conventional notions of pop music and gender roles while inspiring a generation of devoted fans and a revolution in style. This book took me awhile to read, but was occasionally interesting with the personal stories from the early days of the Cure. If you're a fan of The Cure, it's a must read. This intense magical period is captured well, also a childhood of dealing with parents recovering from the ripples left from the previous traumas of the last world war. Tolhurst's autobiography. It seems he managed to stay close to his former band mates in spite of all they went through, and that shows how important friendship and good relationships are to them. He became un unbearable burden to the band and in , while working on their best album, Disintegration , the band fired him. In particular, his description of losing his mother, the loneliness and sense that he was adrift with no real emotional or familial anchor to help stop his inexorable slide into alcoholism. I never thought about it before, but it was really around Lol's departure that my mania for the band began to very slowly wane not because he left, I don't think, though maybe the breakup of that early nucleus of the band did have an effect that contributed to it. Your local Waterstones may have stock of this item. There's also no mention here of the well documented bullying that Tolhurst suffered at the hands of his bandmates. Cured: The Tale of Two Imaginary Boys Writer His reconciliation with Smith, and his later redemption with The Cure on the Reflections Tour is achingly human and true. The more I read, the more I realised I was just wanting to learn bout Robert Smith, instead of Lol himself felt strange reading a memoir about someone to learn about someone else! During the concert in at the Palace in Hollywood he apologizes to Robert Smith in person: "[ View 1 comment. But against the grinding austerity, social unrest and suburban boredom, the spark of rebellion that was punk set alight three young men who would become one of the most revered and successful bands of their generation. He is able to paint a picture of bleakness and colour with the same flair. It is a family, a belief system, a way of life. Cured is the story of a timeless band and a life truly lived. Jimmy Page. If you're a fan of The Cure, it's a must read. The band clearly keeps having fun on the stage! Both these tales have been told countless times before and often better than in Cured. Throughout the book, Lol paints a picture of his friend being loyal, driven, humble, talented, organised and always doing the right thing by his friends and his group. The lineup changes often so maybe that's why the bonds seem a bit loose? Some parts I could really identify with that were uncannily similar to my own experiences, from losing my mother to lung cancer, to discovering how truly vile Twinkies are! Instead such moments are just vague and often repetitive. I remember when he took Robert Smith to court and the hurtful and bad things that were said on both sides. Dec 13, Victoria Mottram rated it it was amazing. Lol eventually rises from the mist. More recently, saw a momentous reunion tour with his former bandmates and Lol performing with The Cure again for the first time in over twenty years. Lol goes to court against his former friends and bandmates. Nothing short of amazing. The book gets at what they were are? We were in a special situation: Yes, we were bored teens in the suburbs but we were also close enough to London to feel the pulse of punk rock rebellion. So began a lifelong friendship that fourteen years later would result in the formation of The Cure, a quintessential post-punk band whose albums-such as Three Imaginary Boys, Pornography , and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me -remain among the best-loved and most influential of all time. The articulation is a little fuzzy in parts, but the message absolutely comes across. As Rock History - this is not good. V&A acquires the Glastonbury Festival Archive The V&A is delighted to announce a collaboration with Glastonbury Festival to create an archive reflecting more than 40 years of diverse and creative performance. Glastonbury Festival is the longest-running popular music and performing arts festival in the world. Set up in 1970 by Michael Eavis on Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset – the Eavis’s family farm for four generations - the Festival is now attended by around 175,000 people annually. It has a long and unique history of hosting music, dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret and other arts and collaborating with artists, set designers and craftspeople. Many distinguished names have performed at the summer festival over the last four decades including Beyoncé, Bjork, Blondie, Marc Bolan, Coldplay, The Cure, Jay-Z, Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, New Order, Oasis, Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, Toots and the Maytals, Velvet Underground and Amy Winehouse. This eclectic archive includes a range of material, from programmes and posters from every festival since 1970, designs for the Festival identity, interviews, unseen film and photographs, correspondence, t-shirts, tickets and other memorabilia. Personal accounts and documents trace the origins of the Festival and festival maps reveal how it has grown and developed within the landscape. Press cuttings document the relationship of the Festival with the local community and stories that captured the nation. The working processes of the Festival will be captured in the archive with original backstage passes, photographs and performers’ set-lists. The archive also includes photographs that reveal the evolution of the legendary Pyramid stage since its creation in 1971 to a permanent stage – also briefly used as a cattle shed in 1981.

  • My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last Sunday, As I Was Walking out Of
Homily for the Diocesan Youth Conference Carlinville The Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year A March 1, 2014 + Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki Bishop of Springfield in Illinois My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, last Sunday, as I was walking out of a restaurant in Chicago, the hostess made a comment about all of the negative things that are happening in the world. She lamented the fact that the news is filled with story after story about bad things. She even asked the question with a bit of despair in her voice: “What’s happening to this world?!?” Such a reaction is not uncommon particularly among older people as they see the values that were so dominant in their earlier years seemingly being overturned in the younger generations. As a result, many of these people have a less than optimistic outlook regarding the future and may even be critical of young people in general. It is, of course, unfair to make such generalizations about young people. In fact, many young people share these views. A Rasmussen poll this week had only 32% of those polled saying the country is headed in the right direction, with 61% saying 2 we’re on the wrong track. A Gallup poll in December had only 39% of respondents saying that they saw America in a positive position, with less than half thinking it will be better in five years.1 We cannot be blind to the fact that there are some elements of truth in these observations, elements which should cause each of us, young and old, to consider how we should respond to these challenges in our world.

They had their own sound, an eerie glamour surrounding a dark whimsicality, yet fans flocked to them throughout the '80s and '90s. Commercial or cult favorites, they're impressive as being one of the '80s' seminal bands who culled more than 30 critical singles. Compilations like 1986's Staring at the Sea: The Singles and 1997's Galore showcased the Cure's accessibility; therefore, having a solid greatest-hits collection might be a bit nonessential. Then again, releasing an album like this at the tip of the new millennium calls for a celebration, and that's what the Cure did.
