Punishment is a major topic of political conversation – as well as a major drain on federal, state, and local budgets. It calls for some clarity of thinking. It was claimed that the United States needed to punish Syria for its use of chemical weapons. California puts thousands of people in prison to punish them for them for various illegal acts. There is little thought, or public discussion as to what may have a beneficial effect; punishment is seen as an end in itself; if more justification is called for, the answer is “we have to do something.” Sadists and masochists aside, punishment should never be an end in itself! In the debate over a military attack on Syria, those opposed asked questions about what would be achieved, how much would be spent, and exactly how would an attack punish Assad. Senator Feinstein’s message was typical of those favoring military action: The evidence is clear that the Assad regime used chemical weapons in the August 21 attack in the Damascus suburbs, as it did roughly a dozen times before in smaller increments. We Pictured left to right: PDC Board member Carol Kuiper, PDC cannot turn our backs on this atrocity. member Barbara Kyser, PDC President Amy Pearl, and PDC But even if we cannot, or should not, “turn our backs on this member Laura Craig, and registering voters and recruiting PYD atrocity” that does not answer the question of what we should do. members! Taking action that makes the situation worse is a poor response. The Syrian situation is resolved – at least for now – by Syria’s agreement to dispose of chemical weapons. If our threat of military action brought about the resolution, good! If the solution falls apart in the future it will call for another debate about what the United States should do. The issue of counter-productive, or irrelevant punishment remains in a broader context. When a student in our public schools acts up the student is often suspended. The school views suspension as punishment – many students view suspension as a reward. For those students, suspension is clearly not an effective punishment. When a citizen with no, or little, prior criminal history is caught with drugs and sent to prison that is punishment! But the result is PDC Member Barbara Kyser (right) registering young Foothill most likely to be creation of a career criminal. The prisoner learns College voters bad habits while incarcerated, and comes out of prison unable to earn a legitimate living. So, society punished the miscreant and in the process caused ripple effects that magnify that punishment beyond the original intention and, in the process, impose an additional burden on society. The state might as well hang a sign in its criminal courts: “This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you.” When an addict is sent to jail for drug possession or for public intoxication that does not solve any problem. It does not help the addict; it does not lead to a cure; it is not even an economic way to deal with an unfortunate situation. The government uses punishment because we must do something. The we must do something mentality is applied selectively. There is no urgency to do something about the homeless, the mentally ill, the victims of gun violence, the hungry, or the myriad other problems facing this country. It's October, and like other Democratic clubs around the Bay Area, the Peninsula Young Democrats (PYD) is caught up in the excitement of election season. On September 12th, a “Meet the Candidates” edition of our bi-monthly News & Views current affairs discussion was held at Back Yard Coffee Company in Redwood City. We were excited to host nearly a dozen candidates in local city council races at News & Views, where our membership was able to ask questions of candidates who wanted to represent them on councils up and down the Peninsula. Many of our new members commented that this was the first time they had the opportunity to interact with council candidates.
