SMOKE AND MONOXIDE ALARMS IN SINGLE FAMILY

PURPOSE: To institute a uniform interpretation of Section R314 and R315 of the Palmdale Residential code for the purposes of determining:

A: If an alarm is audible in all sleeping areas. B: What type of alarm is required when room additions, patios, etc. are added to a structure.

INTERPRETATIONS:

Item A: Alarms shall be required to be interconnected.

Note: A central alarm system with a properly sized alarm or possible a single story with all sleeping areas adjacent to the hallway and each other could be in compliance without interconnection.

Item B: Alarms shall be installed per Section R314.6.2 and R315.2 when any work over $1,000 and a permit is required. This will include patios, room additions, etc. The detectors are required to be added in all sleeping rooms, hallways, etc. per Section R314.3.1 and R315.1. They may also be battery operated only if installed in existing building areas where the wall or ceiling finish is not being removed.

Note: The owner of the property may sign the attached installation statement and waiver in place of an actual field inspection. The owner shall sign the form in person or mail it directly to our department.

PLAN CHECK:

A copy of the attached form should be attached and/or given out with all residential additions, modifications or repairs with a valuation over $1.000. Notes on plans are also acceptable.

SMOKE AND ALARM VERIFICATION

I, ______, owner/occupant of the dwelling located at

______(Address) verify that the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms required by the City of Palmdale Residential Code, Section R314.6.2 and R315.3 and have been installed in compliance with the code and with the manufacturer’s instructions and further that they have been tested and do function properly.

City of Palmdale Residential Code, Section R314.3 and R315.2 states in part that:

When alterations, modifications or repairs are made to a dwelling, battery operated (or 110 volt with battery backup) smoke and carbon monoxide alarms must be installed in all of the following locations within the dwelling:

• In each sleeping room (Smoke alarms only). • Outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms. • On each additional story of the dwelling, including basements and habitable attics but not including crawl spaces and uninhabitable attics. In dwelling units with split levels and without an intervening door between the adjacent levels, a smoke alarm installed the upper level shall suffice for the adjacent lower level provided that the lower level is less than one full story below the upper level. • Carbon monoxide alarms shall be installed in dwelling units and sleeping units within which -burning appliances are installed and in dwelling units that have attached garages.
