Education Development Center, Inc. 2010 Unit Overview Long before the advent of motion pictures, humans made devices Unit Length that used drawings to create the illusion of motion. Although the 45 50-minute sessions technology of the devices has evolved, the basic principles remain the same. Animation is a powerful means of creating works that entertain, enlighten, and amaze us. In this unit, students learn first-hand the techniques and principles of animation. They learn hand-drawn pencil-and-paper animation, starting with the classic task of animating a bouncing ball. Students then learn computer-generated 2-D animation. Throughout the unit, they analyze animated movies made in a variety of animation forms and styles, looking at how the movies use the principles of animation as well as the elements of art and principles

    Volume xx (200y), Number z, pp. 1–11 Pose Controlled Physically-Based Motion Raanan Fattal† Dani Lischinski‡ School of Computer Science and Engineering The Hebrew University of Jerusalem Abstract In this paper we describe a new method for generating and controlling physically-realistic motion of complex articulated characters. Our goal is to create motion from scratch, where the animator provides a small amount of input and gets in return a highly detailed and physically plausible motion. Our method relieves the animator from the burden of enforcing physical plausibility, but at the same time provides full control over the internal DOFs of the articulated character via a familiar interface. Control over the global DOFs is also provided by supporting kinematic constraints. Unconstrained portions of the motion are generated in real time, since the character is driven by joint torques generated by simple feedback controllers. Although kinematic constraints are satisfied using an iterative search (shooting), this process is typically inexpensive, since it only adjusts a few DOFs at a few time instances. The low expense of the optimization, combined with the ability to generate unconstrained motions in real time yields an efficient and practical tool, which is particularly attractive for high inertia motions with a relatively small number of kinematic constraints.     Animating Race The Production and Ascription of Asian-ness in the Animation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra Francis M. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 2 Abstract How and by what means is race ascribed to an animated body? My thesis addresses this question by reconstructing the production narratives around the Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-08) and its sequel The Legend of Korra (2012-14). Through original and preexisting interviews, I determine how the ascription of race occurs at every stage of production. To do so, I triangulate theories related to race as a social construct, using a definition composed by sociologists Matthew Desmond and Mustafa Emirbayer; re-presentations of the body in animation, drawing upon art historian Nicholas Mirzoeff’s concept of the bodyscape; and the cinematic voice as described by film scholars Rick Altman, Mary Ann Doane, Michel Chion, and Gianluca Sergi. Even production processes not directly related to character design, animation, or performance contribute to the ascription of race. Therefore, this thesis also references writings on culture, such as those on cultural appropriation, cultural flow/traffic, and transculturation; fantasy, an impulse to break away from mimesis; and realist animation conventions, which relates to Paul Wells’ concept of hyper-realism.

It is a very structured and planned way of approaching animation where thumbnails are first made related to the action being animat- ed.
