Check out One of These Great Games Today! Apples to Apples Hilarious Games Check out one of these great games today! Apples to Apples Hilarious fun for four to ten players. This award-winning party game is filled with surprising and outrageous comparisons from a wide range of people, places, things, and events. Art of Chill Earn "chill points" by painting landscape features using colors and brushes from your hand of cards. Keep your eye on what other players are doing and be strategic about the sequence in which you complete the features. Finish one of Bob Ross's masterpieces before he does to win chill status! Backgammon A two-player game where each player has fifteen pieces that move between twenty-four triangles according to the roll of two dice. The objective of the game is to be first to move all fifteen pieces off the board. Blokus Players take turns placing their pieces on the board. Each piece must touch another of the same color, but only at the corners. Players stake their claim and protect their territory by fitting as many pieces on the board as possible while strategically blocking their opponents. Boggle A word game that is played using a plastic grid of lettered dice in which players attempt to find words in sequences of adjacent letters. Chess A two-player strategy game where the objective is to checkmate the opponent's king by placing it under an inescapable threat of capture. Codenames Two rival spymasters know the secret identities of 25 agents. Their teammates know the agents only by their codenames. The teams compete to see who can make contact with all of their agents first. Dixit The lovingly illustrated game of creative guesswork where your imagination unlocks the tale. Players use the beautiful imagery on their cards to bluff their opponents and guess which image matches the story. But guessing right is only half the battle. To really succeed, you’ll have to get your friends to decide that your card tells the story! Hanabi Each player is dealt a hand of 5 cards, but players can only see everyone else's cards - not their own. Working together, they must share (and remember) vital information to play cards in the proper launch sequence. Lighting them all creates a dazzling display and avoids a fizzling fiasco! Jenga Carefully pull a wood block out of the tower and place it on top. It's easy at first, but as more blocks get pulled, the tower starts to get unsteady. Players will be on the edge of their seats just trying to keep the tower from tumbling! Left Center Right A fun, fast-paced dice game that you won't be able to put down! Players roll the dice to determine where they pass their chips. The last player with chips is the winner and wins the center pot. Love Letter A game of risk, deduction, and luck. Your goal is to get your love letter into Princess Annette's hands while deflecting the letters from competing suitors. Mille Bornes The classic card game of cross-country racing. Keep a green light handy in case you get stopped, and play a tire puncture on your opponent to keep him from getting ahead. Protect yourself with safety cards, and save one for the classic Coup Fourre. Play your cards right and you'll be the first to cross the finish line and be the master of the Mille Bornes! Phase 10 The rummy-type card game where players compete against one another to see who can complete 10 varied phrases first! Pictureka! Laugh-out-loud fun for family and friends as players try to find it fast and find it first! The game features 9 game tiles filled with whimsical pictures that players race to find as directed on their mission cards. If they find the object they keep the mission card. The player with the most cards wins the game! The Resistance The Empire must fall. Our mission must succeed. By destroying their key bases, we will shatter Imperial strength and liberate our people. Yet spies have infiltrated our ranks, ready for sabotage. We must unmask them. In five nights we reshape destiny or die trying. We are the Resistance! Sail to India Players take on the role of a powerful noble and supply expeditions in search of lucrative trade routes. Players gain victory points by discovering new coastal towns, selling trade goods, and constructing buildings. Discover the route to India and seize the greatest wealth and prestige! SET It’s triple matching mania that anybody can play, but nobody can stop! It also has a ton of educational value. It is the perfect game to help keep your brain active and healthy! Scattergories The fast-thinking game of words and categories. Players roll the letter die, flip the sand timer, and race against the clock to come up with answers to each category on the category list. Score points for writing down answers that no one else did. The more creative the answers, the more points scored! Shut the Box A dice game that’s been around for over 250 years. The object is to "shut" combinations of open numbers that equal the total number of dots showing on the dice. A player scores the sum of the numbers that are still uncovered at the end of their turn. The player with the lowest score wins! Sushi Go! In this fast-playing card game, the goal is to grab the best combination of sushi dishes as they whiz by. But be sure to leave room for dessert or else you'll eat into your score! Gather the most points and consider yourself the sushi master! Telestrations The outrageously fun party game that will keep your family and friends entertained and laughing! Draw what you see, then guess what you saw for hilarious and unpredictable outcomes. Temple Trap Players are challenged to avoid the alligators and other dangerous traps as they navigate the Adventurer out of the shifting temple. You will need to flex your logic muscles in this unique, beautifully designed 3-D puzzle. Tri-Ominos In this classic triangular domino game, score points by matching numbers on the three-sided pieces. It's easy to learn, fast-paced gameplay that's great for the whole family! Trouble Get ready to race to the finish line in this exciting game. The suspense builds as you try to land on spaces that give you additional powers. Can you chase your opponents around the board without getting into trouble and getting sent back to the starting line? The first player to get all four game pieces to the finish zone wins the game! UNO The card game that's easy to pick up and impossible to put down! All it takes to win is a little coordination between colors (red, green, blue, and yellow) and numbers. This fun family card game is takes only minutes to learn and is so much fun to play! Yahtzee Take turns rolling the dice to try and score combos. It's up to the player whether they hustle for a full house or risk it all for a Yahtzee roll. At the end of each turn, the player must fill in one empty box in their column on the score card. The player with the highest grand total at the end of all 13 rounds wins! .

May 27, 2010 Start Memorial Day Weekend off Right with Hasbro Games at Home or Away - You Won't Be Sorry! EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass., May 27, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) --According to AAA, more than 32 million travelers are expected to travel on vacation over Memorial Day weekend - a 5.4 percent increase from 2009. Whether traveling to beaches, camping grounds or U.S. attractions, Hasbro has your family fun covered! When packing, toss in some of Hasbro's newest games to keep everyone engaged and entertained on the open road, in the air, and once you've reached your final destination. "While the economy continues to be rocked by occasional waves of uncertainty, improved economic performance from one year ago should cause more Americans to take vacations this Memorial Day holiday," said Mary Yarber, Director, Program Management for AAA. "Whether traveling to see loved ones or exploring a new travel destination be sure to plan ahead for the most enjoyable vacation by taking advantage of AAA traveling planning tools and discounts on hotels, car rentals and attractions. Be sure to pack a vacation survival kit that includes activities for the whole family such as Hasbro games for enjoyable ways to pass time when traveling." A recent survey conducted by Hasbro found that American families plan to play games during time off this summer. Of those respondents planning a vacation, four in ten (41 percent) would rather have access to a closet full of board games than a big screen TV - talk about unplugged entertainment! If you don't have a game closet at your vacation destination, plan ahead and bring family games such as THE GAME OF LIFE, or CRANIUM.

  • Ludopor – Platform for Creating Word Educational Games
LudoPor Word Games Creation Platform Samuel José Raposo Vieira Mira March of 2009 Acknowledgements While I have done a lot of work on this project, it would not have been possible without the help of many great people. I would like to thank my mother and my wonderful girlfriend who have encouraged me in everything I have ever done. I also owe a great amount to my thesis supervisor, Rui Prada whose advice and criticism has been critical in this project. Next I would like to thank the Ciberdúvidas community, especially Ana Martins, for having the time and will to try and experiment my prototypes. A special thanks is owed to my good friend António Leonardo and all the users that helped in this project especially the ones in the weekly meetings. 2 Abstract This thesis presents an approach for creating Word Games. We researched word games as Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble and more to establish reasons for their success. After this research we proposed a conceptual model using key concepts present in many of those games. The model defines the Game World with concepts such as the World Representation, Player, Challenges, Links, Goals and Performance Indicators. Then we created LudoPor - a prototype of a platform using some of the referred concepts. The prototype was made using an iterative design starting from paper prototypes to high fidelity prototypes using user evaluation tests to help define the right path. In this task we had the help of many users including persons of Ciberdúvidas (a Portuguese language community). Another objective of LudoPor was to create games for Ciberdúvidas that would be shown in their website.

  • Raising Readers: Tips for Parents
Raising Readers: NIU Literacy Clinic Tips for Parents What is Reading Vocabulary? Adapted from: Elish-Piper L. (2010). Information and Ideas for parents about fluency and vocabulary. Illinois Reading Council Journal, 38(2), 50-51 Reading vocabulary refers to the words that a student can read and understand. When students know more words, they are more able to understand what they read. There is a strong connection between understanding the meaning of words and understanding a story, textbook, or other reading materials. Children learn new words in two main ways – indirectly and through instruction. Children learn words indirectly through reading, listening to others read to them, and having conversations with others. Most words that children learn are learned through indirect methods! This means that it is very important to have your child read, listen to others read to him or her, and participate in conversations since these indirect methods will help to build your child’s vocabulary. Children also learn words through instruction at school and in other educational settings. Through a combination of indirect vocabulary encounters and vocabulary instruction, children can learn the words they need to succeed as readers. What Can Parents Do to Promote Vocabulary Development at Home? Here are a collection of ideas to build children’s reading vocabulary at home using indirect and instructional strategies and activities. 1. Talk with your child and try to use new and interesting words. Exposing your child to new words is a great way to build your child’s interest in learning words. 2. Read to your child as often as possible.
