Mission

The Trevor Project is determined to end suicide among LGBTQ youth by providing life-saving and life-affirming resources including our nationwide, 24/7 crisis intervention lifeline, digital community and advocacy/educational programs that create a safe, supportive and positive environment for everyone.

History

• 1994 – TREVOR wins Academy Award® for Best Short Film (Live Action) • 1998 – is founded with seed funding from the Colin Higgins Foundation • 2005 – The West Coast Call Center opens • 2007 – The Randy Stone East Coast Call Center opens • 2008 – TrevorSpace launches • 2010 – TrevorChat goes live • 2011 – The Harvey Milk Call Center opens in historic Castro Camera

ASK TREVOR – an online, non-time sensitive question and answer forum for young people with questions surrounding sexual orientation and gender identity

TREVOR SPACE .ORG – an online, social networking community for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning young people, 13-24, their friends and allies

THE TREVOR SURVIVAL KIT – an educational kit distributed to schools and youth service providers to help educators facilitate discussions about suicide, gender identity and sexual orientation

TREVOR LIFEGUARD WORKSHOPS – a structured, age-appropriate curriculum with trained facilitators that address topics including sexual orientation and gender identity, the impacts of language and behavior on LGBTQ youth and suicide prevention skills in schools

Did You Know?

• LGB youth are four times more likely, and questioning youth are 3 times more likely to attempt suicide as their straight peers (2011 CDC, “Sexual Identity, Sex of Sexual Contacts, and Health-Risk Behaviors Among Students in Grades 9-12”) . • LGB youth who come from highly rejecting families are up to 8 times as likely to have attempted suicide than LGB peers who reported no or low levels of family rejection (2009 Family Acceptance Project™) . • Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people ages 15 to 24 and accounts for 12.0% of the deaths every year in that age group (2009 CDC, “Suicide: Facts at a Glance”) . • Two-thirds of calls to The Trevor Lifeline originate from non-urban or rural areas. • The Trevor Lifeline receives more than 30,000 calls from youth in crisis annually.
