I feel such exhilaration as I write this. New York Women in Film & Television (NYWIFT) created the Muse Awards to recognize the extraordinary contributions women have made in the media and entertainment industry. In 1980, about 100 women gathered at Barbetta restaurant for the first Christmas luncheon— what would become the Muse Awards—to honor critic Pauline Kael. Forty years later, over 1,400 of us are sitting in the Hilton ballroom to celebrate the accomplishments of women in our indus- try. Today we honor the past four decades, and the future of NYWIFT. The following are a few highlights from NYWIFT’s development: 1977: New York producer/director Lenore DeKoven and The Hollywood Reporter bureau chief Morna Murphy Martell convene 25 female colleagues in DeKoven’s Manhattan apartment to discuss forming New York Women in Film—and suddenly the lights go out across NYC. Could the power surge resulting from creation of NYWIF have caused the 1977 blackout? 1990: Susan Sarandon receives a standing ovation for a passionate, politi- cally charged speech at the annual luncheon at the Waldorf Astoria. 2002: A symposium and film exhibition celebrating NYWIFT’s 25th Anni- versary, 25 Years of Women Calling the Shots, is held at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater. June 2019: NYWIFT presents its first-ever NYWIFT Summit on Inclusion, Equality, and Safety at the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice. NYWIFT has come a long way, but its core mission remains the same: ensuring that women take their rightful place in the media and entertain- ment industries. Let us celebrate those who have paved the way and inspire us. Happy holidays! MARION CURTIS In 2017, she launched a production company, Carolines Entertainment, executive producing the film projectsAsk for Jane, now streaming on Amazon Prime, based on the true story of the Jane Collective: a group of young women who developed an underground network that helped women get safe abortions in Chicago between 1968 and 1973; The History of Anti-Semitism, a documentary series for PBS tracing the arc of anti- Semitism from 400 BC to the present day; and What A Mother, a docu- mentary for Comedy Central that explores the relationships between comedians and their mothers through interviews and clips from film and television, looking at how their mothers have influenced their careers.
