I feel such exhilaration as I write this. New York Women in Film & Television (NYWIFT) created the Muse Awards to recognize the extraordinary contributions women have made in the media and entertainment industry. In 1980, about 100 women gathered at Barbetta restaurant for the first Christmas luncheon— what would become the Muse Awards—to honor critic Pauline Kael. Forty years later, over 1,400 of us are sitting in the Hilton ballroom to celebrate the accomplishments of women in our indus- try. Today we honor the past four decades, and the future of NYWIFT. The following are a few highlights from NYWIFT’s development: 1977: New York producer/director Lenore DeKoven and The Hollywood Reporter bureau chief Morna Murphy Martell convene 25 female colleagues in DeKoven’s Manhattan apartment to discuss forming New York Women in Film—and suddenly the lights go out across NYC. Could the power surge resulting from creation of NYWIF have caused the 1977 blackout? 1990: Susan Sarandon receives a standing ovation for a passionate, politi- cally charged speech at the annual luncheon at the Waldorf Astoria. 2002: A symposium and film exhibition celebrating NYWIFT’s 25th Anni- versary, 25 Years of Women Calling the Shots, is held at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater. June 2019: NYWIFT presents its first-ever NYWIFT Summit on Inclusion, Equality, and Safety at the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice. NYWIFT has come a long way, but its core mission remains the same: ensuring that women take their rightful place in the media and entertain- ment industries. Let us celebrate those who have paved the way and inspire us. Happy holidays! Dabney, Melina Kristine (BA/MA Film Studies) Re-mixing Old Character Tropes on Screen: Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, and the New Femininity Thesis directed by Professor Melinda Barlow While there is a substantial amount of scholarship on the depiction of African American women in film and television, this thesis exposes the new formations of African American femininity on screen. African American women have consistently resisted, challenged, submitted to, and remixed racial myths and sexual stereotypes existing in American cinema and television programming. Mainstream film and television practices significantly contribute to the reinforcement of old stereotypes in contemporary black women characters. However, based on the efforts of African American producers like Shonda Rhimes, who has attempted to insert more realistic renderings of African American women in her recent television shows, black women’s representation is undergoing yet another shift in contemporary media.

Great Literature Collection Aldrich Ames: Traitor Within CIA operative Aldrich Ames has, like his father, always been a company man. Although not always competent, he is chief of the Counter Intelligence Soviet Branch and has few friends within the Agency. On the verge of financial ruin due to, among other things, his wife Rosario's heavy spending, the hard-drinking and desperate Ames decides to sell secrets to the Russians. His first "job" has fatal consequences for ten Russians who worked for the CIA. Ames' boss, the Chief of Operations, who is friendly toward Ames, discovers that someone within the CIA is divulging high-level information. He appoints Jeanne Vertefeuille to head up the investigation. Jeanne recruits her own older staff, derisively dubbed the "over the hill gang". Poring through an abundance of records, case files and information proves to be an awesome task and their search goes on for eight years. After a year-long stint in Rome and now with Bush in the White House, Ames continues turning over information to the Russians for millions of dollars, re-routing deposits to Swiss banks and his wife's family in Colombia. Still an alcoholic, he buys a Jaguar and moves his family to an expensive home in a plush suburb. Ames soon realizes, however, that the investigation is closing in and gets very nervous when a Russian politico who could disclose Ames' duplicity defects to America. Ames gets lucky, his treason is not yet uncovered. Ames' own actions, however, begin to draw suspicion towards him, especially when he tries to conduct his own investigation to uncover the spy within the CIA.

FINDING THE MORAL RUDDER TO NAVIGATE LIFE IS NEVER EASY WHEN YOU’RE YOUNG. THIS IS A BRONX TALE, AND IT’S 1968. CHAZZ PALMINTERI TELLS THE TALE BEHIND THE TALE IN 1960 IN THE BELMONT AVENUE SECTION OF THE BRONX, I was sitting on my front stoop on 187th Street. A car started backing into a parking space and another car tried to sneak in behind him. One man jumped out of a car with a baseball bat, and a fight broke out. Another man came over to protect his friend, pulled out a gun, and shot the man with the bat. I was maybe ten feet from them. The man stared at me and we were bonded for life. In the days following I got to know the man who pulled the trigger, and I became his friend. How was I to know that this incident would shape my life forever? This was the beginning of A Bronx Tale. “I HAVE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS. WITH BOB, I HAVE THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE MOVIE. HE IS VERY ARTICULATE WITH THE WAY CERTAIN THINGS LOOK AND WHERE THE TRUTH IS IN THE CHARACTERS. JERRY IS THE REAL MUSICAL-COMEDY GUY. HE KNOWS STAGE MOVEMENT AND ALL THE NUTS-AND-BOLTS STUFF.” CHAZZ PALMINTERI, BOOK “YOU CAN’T HAVE TWO CONDUCTORS CONDUCTING THE ORCHESTRA AT THE SAME TIME—IT WILL DRIVE PEOPLE CRAZY. BUT YOU CAN HAVE TWO CONDUCTORS DISCUSSING WHAT THEY’VE SEEN AND IMPLEMENTING IT IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE. WE’VE WORKED OUT A PRETTY GOOD SYSTEM.
