Chapter 1 How Did We Get Here? “We look at the present through a rear-view mirror. We march backwards into the future.” Marshall McLuhan. The Medium is the Message. 1967 “The camera is the transport for my eye and carries my seeing from place to place.” Robert Rauschenberg As I sit writing this chapter we are seventeen years into the twenty-first century and approximately ten years into the mass adoption of digital photography. That ten years has seen digital capture of both still and moving images move from DSLR’s, to compact cameras and on to tablets and smartphones, whilst social-media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have launched, evolved and reached global domination as publishers of self-created and found images. Broadband widths have improved and WI-FI has become an expectation rather than an unrealistic hope. In short, forms of global communication and the role of photography within them have changed dramatically since the year 2000. The use of the photographic image as a form of communication has become omnipresent and democratic. The days of analogue capture reside in the past now that digital photographic images are being created at a rate and of a quality not seen since the birth of the medium. This digital revolution has happened at such a pace that it seems that there has been little time or perhaps desire to understand the purity of straight photographic capture in the new photographic environment from a twenty-first century perspective. It is interesting that those born since the digital revolution — including the students who populate our schools, colleges and universities — seem to have the hardest time re-imagining the role of photography in the world today. -

Leica Camera AG is writing the next chapter in the success story of special editions finished in olive green enamel and now presents the latest model in this series – the Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari’. Otherwise identical to the serial production model in terms of performance and technical specifications, the special features of this camera are its eye-catching olive green enamel finish and the accessories supplied with the camera. A carrying strap and a case for SD memory cards and credit cards, both crafted from Brandy- coloured, genuine full grain cowhide, underline the aesthetics and the unusual looks of the limited special edition of 1,500 examples of the camera. The matching Leica Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari’ premium lens will be offered separately. It is the first ever M-Lens in the history of Leica products to be produced in olive green enamel finish and, together with the camera, creates a perfect symbiosis of functionality and design. To help ensure availability, please book your rental as far in advance as possible (maximum 4 weeks ahead). To aid the staff of Leo's & the renting public, please inform us ASAP of any change in your bookings. This allows us to re-circulate the equipment. Overdue rentals are subject to full daily charge (see late & overdue Rentals). Please call the store to make a booking. We can not guarantee bookings made via email! If a RENTER has a two "NO-SHOW" rental bookings, rental reservation privileges will be suspended. Deposits & Payment: All rentals are prepaid in full at time of pickup. (Visa, M/C, Debit or Cash) Rental Deposits can be made by Visa, M/C, Bank Draft or cash (if paid via credit card, card holder must be present at the time of deposit). (Debit not accepted.) Valid Picture ID is required for all rentals. If the renter is from within B.C. (Picture ID with current local address, i.e., B.C. Drivers License or BCID is acceptable) then a lower deposit applies. An equally annual aspect is that PhotoPlus Expo is right smack conflicting with SGIA tradeshow about a thousand miles away. So FLAAR attended 3 days of SGIA and then flew to New York on a red-eye to attend the last day of PhotoPlus. Since FLAAR was five days at Photokina in September, it made little sense to see the same items at PhotoPlus for four days; after Photokina one day at PhotoPlus was enough. FLAAR REPORTS 3 PhotoPlus Expo ‘02 Because anything of note was long ago showcased at Photokina in Germany, it would be difficult to find anything new at PhotoPlus.
