The Annual Report was circulated prior to the AGM. The efforts of the committee were acknowledged in ‘pulling together’ the various strands and Paul Shackleton was thanked for again assisting with the layout and printing of the document.

David Robertson spoke briefly on the topic of the George Howden Trust and acknowledged that this information had not been included in the Annual Report, which was simply an oversight.

Mover: Doug Allcock Seconder: Craig Kerr Motion carried.

8. GENERAL BUSINESS • Grant Dickson asked for a comment around player numbers. The Chair advised we have ten teams for the 2017/2018 season – with two T20 teams from 2016/2017 not returning due to player numbers. One other T20 team (The Strikers) have moved to 40-over cricket. Recruitment is looking good, the club has picked up a few new players and some are returning to the club after absences.

• Paul O’Brian has been named the new coach for the upcoming season. The Chair acknowledged the work of the previous Coach – Craig Kerr

• It was indicated we anticipate a slight increase in Junior players from last year - mainly in the Friday night ‘Have a Go’ cricket. Mike Dunlop (CJCA Chairman) stated across the board numbers are down from 253 teams to 233. Mike noted that the drop was expected as there had been an increase following the Cricket

World Cup (held in NZ & Australia) which is normal and this drops off 2-3 years later which has occurred.

• David Fox asked about cricket in the wider Canterbury area. The Chair advised that Metro Cricket (Mike Fisher) had indicated that team numbers were at similar levels to last season.

12 • Some grounds, including Sydenham Park & Saint Albans Park, are out of action due to ongoing repairs or renovations so there may be some pressure for grounds this season.

• It was noted that the CCC & their contractors (Recreational Services Ltd) have done a good job with grounds in preparation for the season – including cutting the outfields twice a week through September.

• There was some damage to the park caused by people in a vehicle doing donuts in the rain – but the council contractors completed repairs promptly so there will be minimal impact on cricket.

No further General Business items were raised.

The Chairman thanked members for their attendance and the 112th AGM was formally adjourned – 7:32 pm

This result reflects a combination of carrying the true cost of running the club i.e. grounds maintenance, this year offset by the ability to secure grant funding to anticipated levels.

Despite this small surplus, we should acknowledge that ongoing operating revenue generation and expense control will be crucial. Work undertaken by the committee in pursuing sponsorships, and successful raffles/events during the season are key.

We would also comment on the improvement in the performance of the club bar over prior year. It is in part as a result of the increased number of social events being held along with more consistent weather allowing the bar to be open more.

The committee remains acutely aware of the need for tight fiscal management, and are

36 SPONSORSHIP REPORT

As with every season, the club relied heavily on the support of our sponsors for its continued operation this year, and through their generosity we were able to advance a number of new initiatives.

On the cricket front we were able to outfit our 3rd grade side with both one and two day uniforms for the first time and the BWC Boomers were also the recipients of one day uniforms.

It was particularly exciting to welcome Fox & Associates as new major sponsors of the club, and we are grateful for their continued support.

In 2018/2019, we will also able to expand the clubs use of CricHQ live scoring to both the 2nds and 3rds thanks to the donation of two tablets to the club.

On behalf of the whole club and its members I want to extend our appreciation to our extended family of sponsors large and small that allow us the luxury of the facilities and cricket we enjoy at BWCUCC.

42 circumstances and all those that supported the team in fundraising and support throughout the week.

In general, I would like to thank the committee for always supporting us, going the extra mile to make our club the great club it is and for all the fundraising efforts to send us to Nationals. Thanks also to all of our sponsors. Your contributions are greatly appreciated by each and every club member. Thanks to all our supporters for always backing us. A special mention to Gerald Cross and Peter Isles for the support of Burnside cricket over the years.

Lastly I want to challenge each and everyone in the Premier squad to keep improving. This is only the start of what we can achieve going forward. We can build on our achievements next season and have another memorable season. Scotty is the prime example of what you can achieve if you put hard work in and stay hungry for success no matter how old or young you are. Bring on the 2018/19 season!

82 AL BROWN TROPHY

Al Brown was a Life Member of the Club, a senior selector and a member of the Club’s Presidents Grade for over thirty years. Here he is watching New Zealand play the West Indies at Lancaster Park in 1980.

The Al Brown Trophy is the supreme award in the Burnside cricket trophy cabinet. It is awarded each season to the individual player in the club who makes the biggest all-round contribution with the bat and ball, and in the field.

Points are accrued for performances in each of the three disciplines. This season, for the second time, Christchurch Metropolitan Cricket used the online scoring system CricHQ; it contains a Most Valuable Player module, so we used that system for our Al Brown competition.
