The Performers Trent Se vern (Ontario) September 29 First Nick Headline October 2015 Canadian folk trio Trent Severn sing contemporary songs about our nation’s people and places with humour, humanity and heart. Their trademark vocal blend and stripped down approach to modern life in Canada has landed hundreds of festival and series appearances and the honour of singing an original arrangement of Oh Canada on Parliament Hill for the Canada Day flag-raising. Comprised of Dayna Manning (guitar/banjo), Emm Gryner (bass), and Lindsay Schindler (fiddle), Trent Severn is a two-time Canadian Folk Music Award nominated group, and the members have four Juno nominations among them. They are known for their collaborations with musicians and non-musicians alike, including the RCAF Snowbirds, The Rheostatics, and Wiarton Willie to name a few. They are lucky enough to count Astronaut Chris Hadfield and legendary Guess Who frontman Burton Cummings as fans. Trent Severn can’t help but connect people and lift them up in the process. Mark Perry (British Columbia) First Nick opener Oct ‘02 Mark Perry has just released his 11th album, Right Here. Born in Smithers BC, his music and stories take you on a journey through his love of rural Canada; With songs that extol the virtuous beauty from the triumphs of playing hockey on frozen lakes, to the excitement of “of Canada’s natural landscape, odes to the a spring thaw when rivers rise and bluebirds return and you’re finally peda- colourfully unique characters of the nation’s ling your bike again. With her stellar guitarist, Terry Hunt, she showcased a whole new batch of songs that left audiences leaping to their feet, mid-set. She has expanded her story-rich, socially conscious repertoire to include field hollers, civil rights era songs and gospel music into her deep catalogue of original songs. Media have struggled to define this inimitable musician’s colorful style, which embraces bits of the blues, bluegrass, jazz, folk, gospel, reggae, and country. Laura has sometimes called her music “folk-funk,” “Afro-celtic,” or “hip-alachian.” Regardless of how she is described, Laura has an indisputable and uncanny knack for enthralling audiences from all walks of life, from octogenarians who line up to hear straight-ahead bluegrass to the pierced-and-tattooed set to their middle-aged parents. He was recently honored with the Canadian Folk Music Award for Artist of the Year. He is the 2017 East Coast Music Awards Entertainer of the Year and also won the 2017 ECMA Folk Recording of the Year for his live album, Searching For Abegweit. His album, When We Get There was nominated for a Juno Award and went up to the International Space Station with Canadian astronaut Julie Payette. Inducted into the Order of Canada it was said: “Songs like Peter’s Dream, Island Clay, Man of Steel and The Hope for Next Year, articulate the feelings of many caught up in desperate situations beyond their control, and at the same time celebrate the beauty of lifestyle and landscape with their strong poetry and stirring narratives.” Robbie Bankes (Alberta/Norway) First Nick opener Apr ’13 with Ida Red Robbie Bankes’ debut LP Foothills was nominated for Young Performer of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. She has played some of the world’s most prestigious venues like Tokyo’s Cotton Club and Carnegie Hall. She’s toured with Grammy award winners Paula Cole and Suzanne Vega and recorded with Sting. Laila Biali is an eclectic-but-focused album. Choice covers include Randy Newman’s I Think It’s Going to Rain Today, Coldplay’s Yellow and the album closer, David Bowie’s Let’s Dance. • Skye Consort
Introducing Skye Consort ith an instrumental lineup that features nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle), cello, and cittern/bouzouki; a lead singer from Sweden with a golden voice; and a repertoire rooted in traditions that span the Atlantic, Skye Consort and Emma Björling is a one-of-a-kind quartet. W“Skye Consort has been doing baroque and folk music fusion since 1999, based in Montreal,” says co-founder Seán Dagher. “We’ve released a series of albums with different singers—classical and folk—and played Welsh, Scottish, Irish, French music—always taking folk songs and giving them interesting new arrangements. “This collaboration with Emma Björling started about two years ago. Alex Kehler, our fiddle and nyckelharpa player, knew her from the folk music world and brought her onboard for a project we were doing with La Nef, a much larger ensemble. Emma’s flight home was cancelled because of an ice storm in Iceland, so she spent three days with me and Amanda [Keesmaat], our cellist, sleeping on the couch. During those three days we got the idea for a Skye Consort project with her. We’d really enjoyed working together on the La Nef thing, and she wanted to do something in particu- lar with cello and the soundscape it brought.” Last year’s eponymous Skye Consort & Emma Björling is the fruit, a wonderfully varied collection of tracks, six of them Scandinavian songs and tunes. The lilting opener, Herr Hillebrand, sets the tone with its spirited yet intricate accompaniment of Björling’s emotionally nuanced voice. Most of the music on the album is traditional, though Dagher wrote the two Celtic tunes, The Skunk/Thick As Thieves, and Cast Iron Stove is a contemporary song from the pen of late Australian songwriter Harry Robertson.

I chose the book tour of Palestine Peace Not Apartheid as the backbone of the documentary before reading the book. I knew that with the kind of subject matter promised by the title, there would probably be a lot of fireworks on that journey. I love how his un-self-censored behavior and attitudes help reveal how authentic and deep President Carter's faith-based motivation really is - and how terrifically complicated he is as a human being, with such an active sense of humor, an encyclopedic knowledge of a seeming endless array of subjects - and how super- sensitive yet bold, feisty and obstinate he can be at times - and that he reveals how a devoted, adoring husband like him fits so organically with the fellow who "loves the ladies." Every time I see this film, President Carter makes me believe that - as frightening and appalling as so many things are in the world today - that there is nevertheless a very real possibility for peace and better lives for future generations if we strive to somehow get along and if we aspire to defining the upside of being human.
