The Performers Trent Se vern (Ontario) September 29 First Nick Headline October 2015 Canadian folk trio Trent Severn sing contemporary songs about our nation’s people and places with humour, humanity and heart. Their trademark vocal blend and stripped down approach to modern life in Canada has landed hundreds of festival and series appearances and the honour of singing an original arrangement of Oh Canada on Parliament Hill for the Canada Day flag-raising. Comprised of Dayna Manning (guitar/banjo), (bass), and Lindsay Schindler (fiddle), Trent Severn is a two-time Canadian Award nominated group, and the members have four Juno nominations among them. They are known for their collaborations with musicians and non-musicians alike, including the RCAF Snowbirds, The Rheostatics, and Wiarton Willie to name a few. They are lucky enough to count Astronaut and legendary Guess Who frontman Burton Cummings as fans. Trent Severn can’t help but connect people and lift them up in the process. Mark Perry (British Columbia) First Nick opener Oct ‘02 Mark Perry has just released his 11th album, Right Here. Born in Smithers BC, his music and stories take you on a journey through his love of rural Canada; With songs that extol the virtuous beauty from the triumphs of playing hockey on frozen lakes, to the excitement of “of Canada’s natural landscape, odes to the a spring thaw when rivers rise and bluebirds return and you’re finally peda- colourfully unique characters of the nation’s ling your bike again. With her stellar guitarist, Terry Hunt, she showcased a whole new batch of songs that left audiences leaping to their feet, mid-set. She has expanded her story-rich, socially conscious repertoire to include field hollers, civil rights era songs and gospel music into her deep catalogue of original songs. Media have struggled to define this inimitable musician’s colorful style, which embraces bits of the blues, bluegrass, jazz, folk, gospel, reggae, and country. Laura has sometimes called her music “folk-funk,” “Afro-celtic,” or “hip-alachian.” Regardless of how she is described, Laura has an indisputable and uncanny knack for enthralling audiences from all walks of life, from octogenarians who line up to hear straight-ahead bluegrass to the pierced-and-tattooed set to their middle-aged parents. Lennie Gallant (Prince Edward Island) November 10 First Nick Headline March 1997 Lennie Gallant has recorded eleven albums which have won him a host of awards and nom- inations from the JUNOs, East Coast Music Awards, and Les Prix Eloizes. He was recently honored with the Canadian Folk Music Award for Artist of the Year. He is the 2017 East Coast Music Awards Entertainer of the Year and also won the 2017 ECMA Folk Recording of the Year for his live album, Searching For Abegweit. His album, When We Get There was nominated for a and went up to the International Space Station with Canadian astronaut Julie Payette. Inducted into the Order of Canada it was said: “Songs like Peter’s Dream, Island Clay, Man of Steel and The Hope for Next Year, articulate the feelings of many caught up in desperate situations beyond their control, and at the same time celebrate the beauty of lifestyle and landscape with their strong poetry and stirring narratives.” Robbie Bankes (Alberta/Norway) First Nick opener Apr ’13 with Ida Red Robbie Bankes’ debut LP Foothills was nominated for Young Performer of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. The Nordic Canadiana song- writer and scholar of folk music spends half his time in his native Calgary, Compelling melodies and acoustic Alberta and the other in Rauland, Norway where he studies folk music at “arrangements that focus the listener’s the University of South East Norway. Laila has won National Jazz Awards as SOCAN Composer of the Year and Keyboardist of the Year. Tracing Light, received a JUNO nomination for Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. She has played some of the world’s most prestigious venues like Tokyo’s Cotton Club and Carnegie Hall. She’s toured with Grammy award winners Paula Cole and Suzanne Vega and recorded with Sting. Laila Biali is an eclectic-but-focused album. Choice covers include Randy Newman’s I Think It’s Going to Rain Today, Coldplay’s Yellow and the album closer, ’s Let’s Dance. It’s catchy and sophisticated, where melodies take thrilling left turns and pre-chor- uses give way to instrumental interludes. One minute Biali is soaring over a bluesy storm of handclaps and hard-charging keyboard riffs, the next she is pouring out her soul on an impas- sioned, slow-burning plea for empathy. It’s pop music, but the experimental, distinctly human variety. She’ll be accompanied by Jon May on drums and Kodi Hutchinson on bass. Andrea Nixon (Alberta) A Nickelodeon Debut! Andrea Nixon earned an Edmonton Music Award nomination for 2018 Country Recording of the Year. Her debut album, Diary of a Housewife, She takes the best of pop, rock, classical, documents her rise as a critically acclaimed independent singer/song- “world and soul, informs it with her expertise writer, while balancing the demands of managing a family. Tying it all together is Nixon’s irresistible, unaffected voice capable of raging, expressing deep sorrow and exuding pure charm. Dan Bern (California) January 12 A Nickelodeon Debut! Dan Bern is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, novelist and painter. He is convincing, funny and timely, with an unassuming tip of the hat to the spirits of past greats, all while sounding fresh and original. Dan’s songs pack a punch, and are engaging and often cinematic. His music has been compared to that of , , , and . Bern’s song Talkin’ Woody, Bob, Bruce, and Dan Blues, from the album Smartie Mine, offers a joking take on this influence, in the style of a Guthrie or Dylan talk- ing blues song, and containing a spoof of a Springsteen song as well. When asked about the similarity between himself and Dylan, he once quipped, “I guess Bob Dylan was sort of the Dan Bern of the ‘60s.” He is known for sardonic, literary lyrics, and a range of musical styles, paired with rock instrumentation. TBA

A Dan Bern show is an indescribable “folk adventure into a shared experience of honesty, self-revelation, humor, brilliant songwriting, sometimes haunting vocals and political protest that sheds new light on issues we think about and some never considered, like the red states have Waffle Houses and the blue states don’t… ” Post Star

On the evenings of Friday November 30 and Saturday December 1, Calgary will host the 2018 Canadian Folk Music Awards Gala. The Nickelodeon is a proud sponsor of this event and we expect a number of our volunteers to be involved. There will be mul- tiple nominee showcases along with award presentations on each night. Spreading the awards over the two evenings will allow the gala to feature longer performances and much more music overall. The jury process to select 2018 CFMA nominees is complete and the full nominee list, five nominees in twenty categories, will be announced later in September. The CFMA Gala will be presented at The Gateway on the SAIT campus and will be run cabaret-style with bar and refreshment service provided. Closer to the event we’ll provide further information regarding performers who will be participating. These evenings are bound to be great fun and the informal atmosphere of The Gateway will allow opportunities to mingle and chat with artists and folk music presenters from across the country.

www.thenick.ca Upcoming Performers January 26, 2019 The Young Novelists Husband and wife duo Graydon James and Laura Spink and band won the 2015 Canadian Folk Music Award for New/ Emerging Artist of the Year and a nomination for Vocal Group of the Year. With unmatched, effortless harmonies, their new album in city & country is not just a memoir of experiences or the histories of small towns, it’s about finding the good and bad that lies within.

The Young Novelists February 9, 2019 John Reischman and the Jaybirds Like the powerful mandolinist and composer at its helm, John Reischman and the Jaybirds fashion a stylish take on bluegrass that seamlessly blends original songs and instrumentals with Appalachian old-time music for a truly unique band sound. Now in their 20th year, with seven acclaimed albums and two Juno nominations, the Jaybirds are simultaneously innovative and unadorned, sophisticated and stripped-down, happily old-fashioned and 21st-century contemporary.

John Reischman & Jaybirds February 23, 2019 Gunning & Cormier Two of Canada’s greatest roots singer-songwriters have finally done what everybody’s wanted for years. Dave Gunning and J.P. Cormier have released their first album together, called Two. Great friends, frequent collaborators, co-writers and touring partners, the pair has been talking about this album since pretty much the day they met. Now it’s here, and it’s everything fans hoped and dreamed it would be.

Gunning & Cormier March 9, 2019 Coco Love Alcorn Coco Love Alcorn has always followed her spirit. With her latest album, Wonderland, Coco offers a universal inter- pretation that invites listeners to jump in and sing along. Exploring songwriting from a new perspective she put down her guitar and wrote with just her voice, releasing a video of The River which spread across the internet. To date there are about 20 choirs singing the song.

Coco Love Alcorn March 23, 2019 Carlos del Junco Master of the diatonic harmonica, simultaneously sophisticated and raw, his playing blurs the boundaries between blues and jazz (hence the name for his band The Blues Mongrels). The emphasis is on blues, but Carlos and his band are not afraid to merrily traipse off in other directions delivering a seamless fusion of New Orleans second-line grooves, swing, Latin, hip-hop or ska melodies, and swampy roots rock.

Carlos del Junco April 6, 2019 Madison Violet Madison Violet, Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac, have earned a Juno nomination and a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Vocal Group Album of the Year. Their songs earned the duo the Grand Prize in the 2010 Maxell John Lennon Song Writing Contest. Born to sing the same songs they have taken to genre-bending, moving effortlessly from folk to pop to electronic to Americana. In a word, they are musical chameleons.
