Dan Bern is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, novelist and painter. He is convincing, funny and timely, with an unassuming tip of the hat to the spirits of past greats, all while sounding fresh and original. Dan’s songs pack a punch, and are engaging and often cinematic. His music has been compared to that of Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Ochs and Elvis Costello. Bern’s song Talkin’ Woody, Bob, Bruce, and Dan Blues, from the album Smartie Mine, offers a joking take on this influence, in the style of a Guthrie or Dylan talk- ing blues song, and containing a spoof of a Springsteen song as well. When asked about the similarity between himself and Dylan, he once quipped, “I guess Bob Dylan was sort of the Dan Bern of the ‘60s.” He is known for sardonic, literary lyrics, and a range of musical styles, paired with rock instrumentation. The Young Novelists are a five-piece, folk-roots band, formed in August 2009. When they first met, Graydon James and Laura Spink had no idea that they would be married one day, much less touring the world together as The Young Novelists. Their previous album made us stran- gers landed them a 2015 Canadian Folk Music Award for New/Emerging Artist of the Year and a nomination for Vocal Group of the Year. The Toronto-based band decided to travel out of the city and into small-town Ontario in order to connect the two places. Their third album In City & Country features songs about 10 small towns in Ontario that tell the universal stories of both parallels while highlighting the differences, similarities, and everything in-between. The Young Novelists create contemporary folk songs that marry their effortless harmonies with darkly poetic lyrics and exquisitely crafted hooks. Kris Demeanor (Alberta) First Nick opener with Tinderbox March ’96 Calgary-born songwriter Kris Demeanor delights in exposing the underbelly of western Canadian culture—gambling, drug use, murder, religion, the suburbs. In 2009 he was awarded the Best New Magazine Writer Award for his feature piece ‘Get a Real Job’ in Unlimited. John Reischman and the Jaybirds (British Columbia) February 9 First Nick Headline October 2005 Like the powerful mandolinist and composer at its helm, John Reischman and the Jaybirds fashion a stylish take on bluegrass that seamlessly blends original songs and instrumentals with Appalachian old-time music for a truly unique band sound, sometimes bluesy, sometimes folky, sometimes hard-edged, sometimes haunting. The Jaybirds feature Patrick Sauber on guitar, Trisha Gagnon on bass, Nick Hornbuckle on banjo and Greg Spatz on fiddle. Now in their 20th year, the Jaybirds are simultaneously innovative and unadorned, sophisticated and stripped-down, happily old-fashioned and 21st-century contemporary. The Jaybirds put their own particular stamp on bluegrass, old time and acoustic roots music, with a satisfying blend of traditional and modern styles. There’s plenty here to please both bluegrass traditionalists and lovers of modern American folk music, especially for those with an appreciation of great harmony singing as well as masterful instrumental playing. Jeremy Gignoux Trio (Alberta) A Nickelodeon Debut! Jeremy Gignoux is ever oscillating between calling himself a violinist or a fiddler. I chose the book tour of Palestine Peace Not Apartheid as the backbone of the documentary before reading the book. I knew that with the kind of subject matter promised by the title, there would probably be a lot of fireworks on that journey. I love how his un-self-censored behavior and attitudes help reveal how authentic and deep President Carter's faith-based motivation really is - and how terrifically complicated he is as a human being, with such an active sense of humor, an encyclopedic knowledge of a seeming endless array of subjects - and how super- sensitive yet bold, feisty and obstinate he can be at times - and that he reveals how a devoted, adoring husband like him fits so organically with the fellow who "loves the ladies." Every time I see this film, President Carter makes me believe that - as frightening and appalling as so many things are in the world today - that there is nevertheless a very real possibility for peace and better lives for future generations if we strive to somehow get along and if we aspire to defining the upside of being human.

www.folkproject.org April 2017 TM Minstrel: Aids for the Hearing Impaired When the new sound system was installed at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, it included a special addition designed to improve conditions for the hearing impaired. It consists of a short range radio transmitter in the sound cabinet that broadcasts the signal sent to the speakers in the room, and a number of small battery-powered receivers that may be borrowed by members of the audience. Audience members can bring headphones or ear buds that plug into the receivers. Or, if they are wearing hearing aids so-equipped, they can slip a loop antenna attached to the receivers that can transmit the signal directly to their hearing aids. Those receivers may be borrowed by our patrons for all Minstrel and Special Concerts except Open Stages (which are not held in the room with the new sound system). A Tax Deduction for FP Members If you volunteer at Folk Project events, there is a tax deduction you may be able to use to your advantage. The IRS permits a tax deduction of 14 cents per mile for use of your personal vehicle in service of a charitable organization. The Folk Project, as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, quali- fies as such an organization. So you can take that deduction for miles driven to FP events at which you volunteer. Keep a log of the miles you drive for such events over the course of the year, and you can use that deduction on next year's taxes.

Employing folk music’s singer- songwriter tradition, the work tells the story of Clare O’Connor, a young leftist activist, writer and musician. After a period of grief and disillusionment she attempts to rebuild her relationships with her younger sisters and rediscover a sense of broader political opportunity by writing a memoir in song. The songs, lyrics and script were developed in collaboration with O’Connor, who is also the principal performer in the show. The culminating interdisciplinary performance is an attempt to enrich and extend my songwriting practice and to investigate the question of consequence in both artistic and activist pursuits. Ordinary Catastrophes features live music, sung and spoken text, narrative, character, movement, staging and lighting design.
