(The Shackleton Project), an impressionistic recreation of one of the greatest survival stories of all time. Theatre, dance, puppetry, photography, film and original music— an installation-in-motion — create an impressionistic, stunning and evocative series of tableaux vivants, taking the audience on an artistic and emotional journey that explores the symbiotic relationship between humans and the environment. Berliner Jazztage The Philharmonie, Berlin, Germany November 7, 1981 The Lounge Lizards was an eclectic musical group founded by saxophonist John Lurie and his brother, pianist Evan Lurie, in 1978. Initially known for their ironic, tongue-in- cheek take on jazz, The Lounge Lizards eventually became a showcase for John Lurie’s sophisticated compositions straddling jazz and many other genres. They were active until about 1998 with the Lurie brothers as the only constant members, though many leading New York City based musicians were members of the group. The group’s name was borrowed from American slang. John Lurie and the Lounge Lizards
John Lurie and The Lounge Lizards John Lurie the sax player, the actor, the painter and the fisherman. Though this might sound like a schizophrenic portrait it's simply the truth. All these different personalities suit in the same physical body. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts on December 14 1952, he's mostly known as the founder of The Lounge Lizards, a modern jazz ensemble featuring a bunch of hipsters of the New York Downtown scene. Along with his brother Evan on piano there were Arto Lindsay (guitar), Anton Fier (drums) and Steve Piccolo (bass). This is the band playing inside “The Lounge Lizards” (EEG, 1981), their first official album, although the band was already active at the end of the seventies. The ensemble underwent a few changes over the years: Arto Lindsay was later replaced by Marc Ribot on guitar and more elements were added until the band expanded into an octet, sometimes even a nonet, maintaining John Lurie in New York, 1982 however their typical unsettling, ironic, often sharp, sound. The Lounge Lizards perfectly embodied the Downtown noir-like atmosphere surrounding the artists in New York at the beginning of the eighties. “No pain for cakes” (Island, 1987), “Voice of Chunk” (Strange & Beautiful Music, 1990), “Queen of all ears” (Strange & Beautiful Music, 1998) plus a bunch of live recordings followed their self-titled debut release and are the overall output of the band. Not too much of an output considering when the band was formed, but John used the stage to refine, rearrange and shape the tunes over and over.

Karen Mantler by Karen Mantler I was conceived by Carla Bley and Michael Mantler at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1965. Born in 1966, I was immediately swept into the musician's life on the road. After having checked me at the coatroom of the Berlin Jazz Festival, to the horror of the press, my parents realized that I was going to have to learn to play an instrument in order to be useful. But since I was still just a baby and they couldn't leave me alone, they had to bring me on stage with them and keep me under the piano. This is probably why I feel most at home on the stage. In 1971, when I was four, my mother let me have a part in Escalator Over The Hill and the next year I sang on another of her records, Tropic Appetites. By 1977 I had learned to play the glockenspiel, and I joined the Carla Bley Band. I toured Europe and the States with her several times and played on her Musique Mecanique album. After playing at Carnegie Hall in 1980, where I tried to steal the show by pretending to be Carla Bley, my mother fired me, telling me "get your own band". I realized that I was going to have to learn a more complicated instrument. After trying drums, bass, and flute, which I always lost interest in, I settled on the clarinet. I joined my elementary school band and quickly rose to the head of the clarinet section. The band director let me take the first improvised solo in the history of the Phoenicia (a small town near Woodstock, NY) elementary school.
