A VISIT TO THE CURRAGH ______

Cadets of the Officers Training Corps of University College Dublin, photographed at Kingsbridge before entraining for the Curragh Camp on Saturday. The cadets of the Officers' Training Corps of University College, Dublin, made their first public appearance on Saturday, when they marched, headed by a pipers' band, from their headquarters at Griffith Barracks to Kingsbridge Station, where they entrained for Droichead Nua en route to the Curragh Camp. Yesterday the cadets spent a busy day at the Curragh. The day's programme began with an inspection of the Corps by Major-Gen. MacNeill, O.C. Curragh Camp, followed by a church parade to the garrison church. Subsequently the cadets were conducted around and given demonstrations on the machine gun range, the grenade range, and the bayonet-fighting course. They were also shown the armoured cars and tanks and given an observation of training of recruits and of more advanced officers. An interesting Rugby football match was played between the cadets and the Curragh team, which was won by the Curragh team by 2 tries (6 points) to nil. There were in ail 115 cadets and four officers. Major J. V. Joyce, O.C. the Corps, was in charge, and the other officers present were: — Capt. O'Connell, Corps Adjutant; Capt. McGee, Training Officer; and Capt. D. V. Ryan, Q.M, of the Corps. The cadets returned to Dublin last evening delighted with their brief visit.

Several UCD staff and students participated in the , including Pádraig Pearse, Thomas MacDonagh, Michael Hayes and James Ryan, and a smaller number, including and Willie Redmond, fought for the British in . Many UCD staff, students and alumni fought in the Irish War of Independence. Following the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, four UCD graduates joined the government of the Irish Free State.
