The Chickamauga City Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting on Monday, December 14, 2020 at 5:15 p.m. The meeting was held at Gordon Lee High School to allow for social distancing due to COVID-19. Members present were: Chairman, D.A. Jewell, V; Vice Chairman, Grant Parrish; David Askew, Janet Landers and Melody Day, Superintendent.

Chairman Jewell offered condolences on behalf on the Board of the recent passing of Mr. Askew’s father, William Askew. He was a friend to countless people in the community and will be deeply missed.

Chairman Jewell called the meeting to order and asked Vice Chairman Parrish to give the invocation.

Chairman Jewell welcomed the visitors to the meeting: Diane Miller, Michael Langston, Stacy McDaniel, Jeff Sikes, Adam Crowley, Annie McDaniel, Sidney Gasaway, Emma Minghini, Addison Sturdivant, Jordan Dyer, Ashlyn Schmidt, Emoree Rogers, Brooklyn Hudson, Tricia Goodwin and Dana Mull.

Superintendent Day recognized the following individuals/groups: Gordon Lee High School Team-Class A/AA State Runner-up; Gordon Lee High School Team-Class A State Champions; Chickamauga City Schools Board of Education-Georgia School Boards Association’s (GSBA) 2020 Exemplary School Board Award.

Vice Chairman Parrish made the motion to approve the December Board Agenda. With a second from Ms. Landers, the motion carried.

Mr. Askew made the motion to approve the December Consent Agenda containing the following items: Minutes of the November 9, 2020 Regular Meeting; Approve fund raisers: Gordon Lee High School: Boys and Track-Cornhole Tournament, January or February 2021; Boys Basketball-sell GL decals for vehicles, December 2020-May 2021; HOSA- Bundt Cake Sale, January-February 2021; HOSA-Donation Dot Cards, January-February 2021; HOSA-Choo-Choo BBQ Feast-for-4 Tickets, December 2020-January 2021; -sell GL apparel, December 2020; Wrestling-Youth Wrestling Tournament, February 13-14, 2021. With a second from Vice Chairman Parrish, the motion carried.

Financial reports presented for approval were: Chickamauga City Schools General Fund-September and October 2020; Bus Account-September and October 2020; SPLOST 2016-September and October 2020; General Obligation 2016-September and October 2020; Chickamauga Elementary School-October 2020; Gordon Lee Middle School-October 2020; Gordon Lee High School-October 2020; K.I.D.S. After Care Program-October 2020; Chickamauga City Schools Nutrition Fund-October 2020. Vice Chairman Parrish made the motion to approve the financial reports as presented. With a second from Ms. Landers, the motion carried.

Vice Chairman Parrish made the motion to approve a sports photography agreement with Jan Wright, an independent contractor, in the amount of $297.50 to be paid twice a school year to provide photography for Gordon Lee High School Athletics. Mr. Askew seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Ms. Landers made the motion to approve the concurrent resolution calling for ESPLOST election. Vice Chairman Parrish seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Vice Chairman Parrish made the motion to approve the resolution certifying completion of Chickamauga Elementary School HVAC Project. With a second from Ms. Landers, the motion carried. Attachment 722A

Ms. Landers made the motion to approve the purchase of wireless units from Howard Technology Solutions for Gordon Lee Middle School and Gordon Lee High School not to exceed $15,500. Vice Chairman Parrish seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Mr. Askew made the motion to approve the following expenditures exceeding $5,000: CDW-G for 25 Chromebooks at Chickamauga Elementary School-$7,572.75; CDW-G for 30 Chromebooks and cart at Gordon Lee Middle School-$8,190; Learning Without Tears for keyboarding and writing license renewal at Chickamauga Elementary School-$5,943.92. Vice Chairman Parrish seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

The Superintendent’s report consisted of the following items: • COVID Update and New Guidelines • Graduation Rate Data • December menus • “Board & Administrator”

Chairman Jewell asked if there were matters to be considered in Executive Session. Superintendent Day answered that there were personnel matters to be considered. Vice Chairman Parrish made the motion to adjourn to Executive Session. With a second from Ms. Landers, the motion carried.

Motion to re-convene was made by Vice Chairman Parrish. Ms. Landers seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Superintendent Day made the following recommendations for personnel: • Acknowledge FMLA for Allie Smith, instructor at Gordon Lee High School. • Vice Chairman Parrish made the motion to approve Terri Miller, instructor at Gordon Lee High School, in the releasing from her contract and acknowledgement of retirement at the end of the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year. With a second from Mr. Askew, the motion carried. • Ms. Landers made the motion to approve Alexis Williams as instructor at Gordon Lee High School for the remainder 2020-2021 school year. With a second from Vice Chairman Parrish, the motion carried. • Vice Chairman Parrish made the motion to accept the resignation of Brooke Johnson, school food service assistant, at Chickamauga Elementary School. Ms. Landers seconded the motion, and the motion carried. • Ms. Landers made the motion to approve Stacy Murphy as food service assistant at Chickamauga Elementary School. Mr. Askew seconded the motion, the motion carried. • Vice Chairman Parrish made the motion to approve Ken Hertz as Gordon Lee High School Lay Coach for Cross Country/Track for 2020-2021 school year. Ms. Landers seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

With no further business, Chairman Jewell called for a motion to adjourn the meeting. Mr. Askew made the motion to adjourn, with a second from Ms. Landers. Motion carried and the meeting was adjourned at 8:49 p.m.

The next regularly scheduled Board Meeting of the Chickamauga City Board of Education will be held on January 11, 2021 at 5:15 p.m., in the Board Room.
