1 Snake, Rattle, and Roll Transcript Tyler: This episode of Lost Highways is being released by History Colorado as many of us are staying home in an effort to keep our community safe during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. To those of you out there who are unable to stay home, whether it’s because you’re working to keep people safe, provide healthcare, or provide supplies, thank you. Underwriting: Lost Highways, from History Colorado, is made possible by the Sturm Family Foundation, proud supporters of the humanities and the power of storytelling, for more than twenty years. [Music] Tyler: In 1979, curator and historian Peggy Ford Waldo had just started working at the Greeley History Museum, when she stumbled upon a mysterious artifact, buried away in storage. Peggy Ford Waldo: And hanging in our very tiny collections storage area was a dress made of the skins of rattlesnakes and it was just protected with a dry cleaner's bag. Noel: A dress made of RATTLESNAKE SKINS. Naturally, Ford Waldo, who you might remember from some of our previous episodes about Dearfield and Native American Mascots, was curious. Peggy Ford Waldo: It looks like a flapper dress. And of course, a dress made of snake skins with the hem of the dress being all the rattles of these skins intact, would have been in for a great time. You know, let's shake, rattle and roll. Tyler: And it wasn’t just a dress. Along with it was an ENTIRE flapper outfit made of snake skins and rattles, including accessories. Peggy Ford Waldo: There was a pair of shoes that had been covered with rattlesnake skins and there was a headband with very large rattles glued all the way around it.

The second studio album by the American indie folk band The Lumineers is Cleopatra. The album was released on April 8, 2016 in the United States, and features the singles "Ophelia", "Cleopatra", "Angela" and "Sleep on the Floor". The album got favorable reviews and commercial success, debuting on the UK Albums Chart and the Billboard 200 at number one. It is the band's last album to feature Neyla Pekarek, who left to pursue a solo career in October 2018. Cleopatra sounds slight with 11 songs and clocking in at a brisk 35 minutes. Per song is less than four minutes, but the target is much more intense compared to The Lumineers' first record. At the beginning of the song, percussion is most prominently featured. It's used less and less, beginning at the halfway stage, and the result is a soft deceleration. Conceptually, this makes a lot of sense, and you can see why it will be performed by a band, but it doesn't change the fact that the first half of the album is a lot more enjoyable. Neyla Pekarek Grace Fleisher [email protected] neylapekarek.com Neyla Pekarek is currently touring in support of her debut solo album Rattlesnake on S-Curve Records/BMG. Pekarek returns to her Colorado roots, with a folk opera built around a mythological figure known as “Rattlesnake Kate.” First Performances and Education My first professional gig was in The Lumineers for eight years. Prior to that I studied vocal music in college and sang with barbershop quartets. Leaving The Lumineers to Write and Record Rattlesnake I made the decision to leave the group last fall. The Lumineers’ tour schedule, for better or worse, is very demanding. Whenever I had time off I was flying to Portland to record my solo album. Mostly the decision to work in Portland was so I could work with M Ward as a producer. The Story Behind Rattlesnake When I was a college student in Greeley, Colorado I came across this story while visiting an historical museum there.

  • Saying 'Heh' Proves to Be a Key to Success for the Lumineers
28 | FEBRUARY.15.2013 | FRIDAY WEEKENDER: STAYING IN LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER | LEXGO.COM Saying ‘heh’ proves to be a key to success for The Lumineers By Steve Johnson Chicago Tribune There’s a question that someone paying close attention to contemporary pop music would not be considered crazy for asking: What’s with all the shouting? Seemingly all of a sudden, bands have been having success punctuating their tunes with “hos” and “heys.” These “heys” are not lyrical content, as in Hey Jude. Nor are these chants ritually repeated, almost affect- less incantations of a song’s chorus, like in most recent Katy Perry hits. Rather, they are a form of percussion, a novel — compared to what else is out there — way of thickening a song’s rhythms and of calling back to a time before iTunes, Auto-Tune, recording technology itself. On its own terms, and as a symbol of popular music’s new willingness to reach back into our rural roots, this trend is as welcome as a third encore at an Avett Brothers show. The most obvious example is, yes, Ho Hey, the infectious, upbeat song by the Lumineers climbed as high as No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot 100, No. 1 on its rock chart and No. 2 on its pop chart. Ho Hey is so perky and undeniable, it would be the song of the summer, if it weren’t having its biggest success now. But Ho Hey is much more folk than rock. And rather than having the backing of what remains of the music industry, the Lu- mineers are an indie trio out of Denver.
