UNMASKING THE PROTESTER: THE MEANINGS AND MYTHS OF COLLECTIVE CIVIL RESISTANCE MOVEMENTS IN AFRICAN AMERICAN AND POLISH POSTRESISTANCE PROSE FICTION (Monograph) by Agnieszka Herra Graduate Program in Comparative Literature A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies The University of Western Ontario London, Ontario, Canada © Agnieszka Herra 2014 Abstract My contention is that the narrative framework of social movements, especially the ones deemed “successful” such as the American Civil Rights Movement and the Polish Solidarity Movement, reflects unity, collectivity, and group success in collective memory. During the period of the movements’ duration, this provides a clear rhetorical purpose: to give the appearance of unity in order to be cohesive and give effective voice to the demands. Once the movements end, this vision of collective identity usually continues because of the symbolic and political gains made, even if the mass collective no longer functions as a whole. I argue that the voices that did not fit into the collective movements emerge subsequently to question this monologic language in literary form. I call this “postresistance” literature because of its production after the movements, but also because it examines the ways in which individuals established their political voice within the totalizing narrative frameworks of social movements. This dissertation uses Bakhtin’s notion of dialogic language to argue that novels in the postresistance period challenge the mythical underpinnings of the movements, as well as collective memory, in order to give voice to individual’s experience of the movement. Using postmodern theory, I establish a postresistance analytic framework. The novels I examine resist a narrative of progress from oppression to freedom. Through their fragmented narratives and shifts in time, the individual characters react to the rhetorical frameworks of the movements. I use novels written after the American Civil Rights Movement and Polish Solidarity Movement in order to provide a more complete conception of this postresistance analysis. Ishmael Reed’s Flight to Canada (1976) and Stefan Chwin’s Hanemann (1995) allow me to discuss how dialogic voices question the conception of place and its imagined link to history and myth. I use Alice Walker’s Meridian (1976) and Janusz Anderman’s Cały Czas (2006) to focus on individuals within the movements who question the rhetorical motivations of the movements. Before the Roman era, for example, mummies had been placed in wooden coffins, while the Gilded Lady is preserved in only linen wrappings and cartonnage, a papier mâché-like material.

    Katyn massacre This article is about the 1940 massacre of Polish officers The Katyn massacre, also known as the Katyn Forest massacre (Polish: zbrodnia katyńska, 'Katyń crime'), was a mass murder of thousands of Polish military officers, policemen, intellectuals and civilian prisoners of war by Soviet NKVD, based on a proposal from Lavrentiy Beria to execute all members of the Polish Officer Corps. Dated March 5, 1940, this official document was then approved (signed) by the entire Soviet Politburo including Joseph Stalin and Beria. The number of victims is estimated at about 22,000, the most commonly cited number being 21,768. The victims were murdered in the Katyn Forest in Russia, the Kalinin (Tver) and Kharkov prisons and elsewhere. About 8,000 were officers taken prisoner during the 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland, the rest being Poles arrested for allegedly being "intelligence agents, gendarmes, saboteurs, landowners, factory owners, lawyers, priests, and officials." Since Poland's conscription system required every unexempted university graduate to become a reserve officer, the Soviets were able to round up much of the Polish intelligentsia, and the Jewish, Ukrainian, Georgian and Belarusian intelligentsia of Polish citizenship. The "Katyn massacre" refers to the massacre at Katyn Forest, near Katyn-Kharkiv-Mednoye the villages of Katyn and Gnezdovo (ca. 19 km west of Smolensk, memorial Russia), of Polish military officers in the Kozelsk prisoner-of-war camp. This was the largest of the simultaneous executions of prisoners of war from geographically distant Starobelsk and Ostashkov camps, and the executions of political prisoners from West Belarus and West Ukraine, shot on Stalin's orders at Katyn Forest, at the NKVD headquarters in Smolensk, at a Smolensk slaughterhouse, and at prisons in Kalinin (Tver), Kharkov, Moscow, and other Soviet cities.

(TN) INDIA Dalit literature is the literature which artistically portrays the sorrows, tribulations, slavery degradation, ridicule and poverty endured by Dalits. Dalit literature has a great historical significance. Its form and objective were different from those of the other post-independence literatures. The mobilization of the oppressed and exploited sections of the society- the peasants, Dalits, women and low caste occurred on a large scale in the 1920s and 1930s,under varying leaderships and with varying ideologies. Its presence was noted in India and abroad. On the other hand African American writing primarily focused on the issue of slavery, as indicated by the subgenre of slave narratives. The movement of the African Americans led by Martin Luther King and the activities of black panthers as also the “Little Magazine” movement as the voice of the marginalized proved to be a background trigger for resistance literature of Dalits in India. In this research paper the main objective is to draw similarities between the politics of Caste and Race in Indian Dalit literature and the Black American writing with reference to Bama’s Karukku and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple. Shaftel Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 Abstract PARRISH, JORDAN G., M.A., August 2017, Film Studies The Undead Subject of Lost Decade Japanese Horror Cinema Director of Thesis: Ofer Eliaz This thesis argues that Japanese Horror films released around the turn of the twenty- first century define a new mode of subjectivity: “undead subjectivity.” Exploring the implications of this concept, this study locates the undead subject’s origins within a Japanese recession, decimated social conditions, and a period outside of historical progression known as the “Lost Decade.” It suggests that the form and content of “J- Horror” films reveal a problematic visual structure haunting the nation in relation to the gaze of a structural father figure. In doing so, this thesis purports that these films interrogate psychoanalytic concepts such as the gaze, the big Other, and the death drive. This study posits themes, philosophies, and formal elements within J-Horror films that place the undead subject within a worldly depiction of the afterlife, the films repeatedly ending on an image of an emptied-out Japan invisible to the big Other’s gaze.

Greta Zybon September 11, 2003 Why would I want to talk about my experiences as a German civilian in WW II, a horrendous war that never should have happened? Why should I subject you to listening? My concern is less about the German experience, than to tell what it means to be a civilian in a modern war. Wars are going on now. We know that by Setpember 1, 2003, more than 247 American service members were killed since the start of the Iraq war. Over 6,076 civilians were reported dead in Iraq (AFSC). I do hope that the world would learn from those catastrophes and develop preventive and alternate methods to settle problems. War technologies receive more attention than knowledge and the search of alternate methods to settle problems. I am painfully aware that Nazi-Germany started the war.

    space of freedom 3 I came to understand this city slowly, but I finally got it. You need to feel the spirit of Gdańsk, you have to keep your eyes wide open, then you understand more. Experience Freedom Lech Wałęsa There is no Gdańsk without freedom. Courage, freshness, but first and foremost freedom. This is a truly a Gdańsk tradition. Held by Gdańskers in the highest esteem for centuries, this virtue has determined the city’s unique genius loci. Such is today’s Gdańsk: open to new ideas, keeping up with the times, making things happen, ever surprising. You can feel it among the townhouses of the Old Town, just as well as amidst the shipyard cranes of the Young Town, on the beautiful sandy beaches and in the post-industrial halls, in the parks and in the tunnels: in Gdańsk, freedom is everywhere, you can almost touch it. It inspires It would be impossible and transforms both people and places. And such to understand the history are the Gdańskers themselves: courageous, of contemporary Europe without committed, passionate and creative. Gdańsk. It was here that World War II began on 1 September 1939 – a war which brought with it an experience of evil such as the world had never known before.
