Welcome to the Nantucket atheneum dance Festival! What a milestone — this is our seventh year of bringing the magic of dance to Nantucket.

For 180 years the Nantucket Atheneum has strengthened our island community through top quality library services and programs. This year the library served more than 160,000 adults, teens and children year round with free access to over 1.5 million books, CDs, and DVDs, free reference and information services and 880 free cultural and educational programs. In keeping with its long-standing tradition of educational and cultural programming, the Nantucket Atheneum is very excited to present a multifaceted dance experience on Nantucket.

This year’s performances feature the world’s very best dancers from and under the exceptional artistic direction of Tyler Angle, dynamic young choreographers alongside revered choreographers from the past, and the bonus of vibrant live music. In addition to the captivating performances, the festival this week has offered an enriching array of free community events including the Lecture Demonstration with Tyler Angle, the dance film, “The Rain,” with film maker and choreographer Pontus Lidberg, the Children’s Program and two youth master dance classes.

As a public library, the Nantucket Atheneum receives limited funding from government sources. Therefore, cultural offerings, such as tonight’s dance performance and this week’s outreach events, are only possible through the generous support of our donors. We wish to express our deepest appreciation to the festival sponsors who are listed in this program including our corporate sponsor Northern Trust. Finally we send a special thank you to our wonderful Dance Festival Committee, Honorary Chair Nan Geschke, Steering Committee under the dynamic leadership of Jane Tyler and Marcia Welch and for all their hard work, energy, and commitment to bringing the Dance Festival to our community.

On behalf of the Atheneum Board of Trustees, the Atheneum staff and the Dance Festival Committee, we thank you for being part of the Nantucket Atheneum Dance Festival 2014.

The Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet premiered in 1966. It was performed by the New York City Ballet at New York State Theater.

Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet was the first abstract work Balanchine designed for the stage of the New York State Theater. Balanchine often said that chamber music was not suitable for large , since chamber pieces typically are “too long, with too many repeats, and are meant for small rooms.”

Schoenberg crafted his orchestration of the Brahms G Minor Piano Quartet in the 1930s out of a similar dissatisfaction, telling a critic that the chamber version “is always very badly played, as the better the pianist, the louder he plays, and one hears nothing of the strings.” Lincoln Kirstein writes that the dances “seem steeped in the apprehension and change permeating the sunset of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. They suggest a world drunk on ‘wine and roses. ’”

Flower Festival in Genzano Pas de Deux

Isabella Boylston, James Whiteside

The Flower Festival in Genzano is a one-act ballet by Danish choreographer and balletmaster August Bournonville (1805–79). Bournonville created the work for Denmark’s Royal Ballet in 1858. The libretto is taken from a tale found in “Impressions de Voyage” by Alexandre Dumas and tells the story of two real-life lovers, Rosa and Paolo.

The ballet premiered in 1858 and was danced in its entirety by Denmark’s Royal Ballet until 1929 when it was dropped from the repertoire. The pas de deux was extracted however, and lived on in Denmark’s Royal Ballet School until Harald Lander, director of , once again brought it to the stage in 1949. It is considered one of Bournonville’s most perfect compositions, a charming love duet between two young people where the steps express both their joy and their teasing playfulness.
