Personal info and stories from tasteofcountry.com

George Strait enlisted in the Army in 1971; he began performing with a group called Rambling Country. He married Norma soon after; they had their first child in 1972.

He was honorably discharged in 1975 and then went to college to earn a degree in agriculture from Southwest , now Texas State.

George Strait played himself in a 1982 movie called The Soldier. IMDB describes the plot this way: “Terrorists take over a plutonium bomb and threaten to detonate it in a Saudi Arabian oil field. A special anti-terrorist unit is sent in to stop them.”

He’s not shy, he just doesn’t like doing interviews – or music videos, for that matter. When he gives an interview, media people say he’s pleasant and thoughtful.

USA Today asked George Strait which song of his own he initially thought he should have turned down. He mentioned “.” He told the paper, “Obviously, I was wrong, because it went to No. 1. I just didn’t think it was strong,” Strait says of the 2002 hit. Another tidbit from this rare interview: Strait can’t remember all his own hits.

George Strait and his brothers were raised by their father, John, after their mother, Doris, left following a divorce. According to CMT, she took Strait’s sister with her.

John, Strait’s dad, was a mathematics teacher and a farmer. The would-be singer wasn’t immersed in country radio as a boy. He listened to news and farm reports. As a teenager he got interested in music, first rock, and then country.

Strait is not a member of the Grand Ole Opry. The Opry requires a certain number of performances; it’s likely that his schedule has kept him from meeting that.

George Strait has the most CMA and ACM wins and nominations in country music history. He’s a two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year and has two ACM Entertainer of the Year trophies in addition to an assortment of Male Vocalist and Song of the Year awards.

With 60 #1 hits and 15 Top Ten songs, he’s moving in on the record for most Top 10 records — a record currently held by , who has 91.

Strait has released over 90 singles, at least one in every calendar year since 1981. No other artist can claim that.
