This appreciation lives in the deepest part of me.”—Bishop Daniel E. Flores This is the Second Sunday of our trip through Lent. We ponder the mystery of the transfiguration in the light of our own experiences and stories. If we’re perceptive, we do get some glimpses of the wonder of God’s love illuminating our pilgrimage through “the mud, the blood, and the beer.” (Johnny Cash) “Here in the real world” (Alan Jackson) it doesn’t always work out like we wish it would, but every now and then He gives us some sense of that love that never dies if we’re watching! We “don’t know we’re beautiful,” (Kenny Chesney) but he does show us now and then. Jesus’ transfiguration and the experience of Peter, James & John was unique, but we can be transfigured and see transfigurations in the light of the Father’s love. The intensity of our “religious experience” is not as important as how we respond to God-whether we let Him transfigure us or show himself to us. While it may “feel” easier to ignore the invitations or calls of the Spirit, it will really backfire because we were made to respond! God doesn’t give up easy! Lord help us catch those “glimpses” you give us of “how good it is for us to be here!” We hope that what we do or “give up” during Lent “sensitizes” or enhances our perception of the glimpses of His love that we get here on Earth.

  • Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’S Blown Away Tour
COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

  • Trinity Lutheran Church
Trinity Lutheran Church Fall 2020 Newsletter From the desk of Pastor Jander Something you may not know about me is that I am a country music fan. Though I enjoy and listen to numerous styles of music from classical to jazz to rock to hip-hop and just about anything in between, living in Texas, I grew up on country music. One element of this style that particularly draws me is the way it tells stories. Songwriters in this genre have honed their craft so well that entire movies have been made based solely on one song. For example, Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler,” and “The Coward of the County,” and Loretta Lynn’s “Coal Miner's Daughter.” Though it has not been made into a movie – yet – George Strait’s “I Saw God Today” reflects another reason I enjoy country music – the songs often talk about faith in the midst of real life. “I Saw God Today” tells the story of a man who, after his wife has just had a baby, sees God in many different things in the course of a walk he takes. Here are the lyrics written by Rodney Clawson, Monty Criswell, and Wade Kirby: Just walked down the street to the coffee shop Yea, I couldn't help but notice she was starting to Had to take a break show I'd been by her side for eighteen hours straight Stood there for a minute taking in the sky Saw a flower growin' in the middle of the sidewalk Lost in that sunset Pushin' up through the concrete A splash of amber melted into shades of red Like it was planted right there for me to see I've been to church, I've read the Book The flashin' lights, the honkin' horns I know He's

  • “Boys 'Round Here”: Masculine Life-Course Narratives in Contemporary Country Music
social sciences $€ £ ¥ Article “Boys ‘Round Here”: Masculine Life-Course Narratives in Contemporary Country Music Cenate Pruitt Department of Sociology & Human Services, University of North Georgia, Gainesville, GA 30566, USA; [email protected] Received: 6 May 2019; Accepted: 4 June 2019; Published: 7 June 2019 Abstract: Country music remains one of the most popular genres in U.S. American society but is historically under-researched compared to rock, rap and other styles. This article extends the social science literature on the genre by examining themes of masculine identity in popular country hits of the current century. A content analysis of 35 top country hits from the last 15 years of the Billboard charts reveals three key masculine archetypes: the lover, the family man and particularly the country boy, which is the dominant masculine image within the last few years of the genre. Together, the three create a life-course narrative where the rambunctious country boy will eventually settle into monogamous heterosexual romance, with marriage and fatherhood presented as the ultimate achievement of successful manhood. A fourth, lesser, archetype, the roughneck, presents an “arrested development” version of the country boy, fully-grown but rejecting the social and familial responsibilities of the other archetypes. These narratives simultaneously challenge some aspects of hegemonic masculinity (urbanity, white-collar labor) while reinforcing others (whiteness, heterosexuality). Keywords: country music; gender; masculinity; life course; fatherhood; identity 1. Introduction Country music, the fourth-most popular radio format in the U.S., comprises 10% of all music consumed in the U.S., whether digital streaming or physical purchases (The Nielsen Company 2017).
