Abstract Algebra 1 Groups Definition 1.1 (Group). A Group G is a set with a binary operation m : G × G ! If only 1 and 2 are satisfied, then G is a monoid. If a structure has 8a; b 2 G, ab = ba, then it is abelian. Definition 1.2 (Group Homomorphism). A map f : G ! H between groups is a homomorphism if f(ab) = f(a)f(b) If the homomorphism is injective, it is a monomorphism. If the homomorphism is surjective, it is an epimorphism. If the homomorphism is bijective, it is an isomorphism. Lemma 1.1. Let ' : G ! H be a group homomorphism. Then '(eG) = eH and '(a−1) = '(a)−1 Proof. The order of g 2 G is the smallest positive n such that gn = e, or 1 is no such n exists. Theorem 1.5 (Lagrange's Theorem). If G is a finite group, then the order of any element divides jGj. Proof. We first check that each element has finite order. Since jGj < 1, there must be m; n > 0 such that gn = gm, where n < m So gm−n = e. Suppose that g has order n. Then consider fe; g; g2; : : : ; gn−1g = H The left cosets of H partition G, and each is size n, so jGj = nk, where k is the number of left cosets of G. Definition 1.8 (Direct Product Group). If G; H are groups, then G × H has elements f(g; h): g 2 G; h 2 Hg and multiplication (g; h)(g0; h0) = (gg0; hh0) Definition 1.9 (Normal Subgroup). A group G is a simple group if it has no proper nontrivial normal subgroups. Now we will determine solutions to the problem of how can a group be described. 1. Listing the elements and making a table 2. Give the generators for G as a subgroups of Sn, finite groups only. 3. Give it as Aut X for some structure X. 4. Build up from simpler groups 5. Give generators for G as a subgroup of GLn (giving a homomorphism f : G ! GLn is the beginning of representation theory) 6. Generators and Relations. Theorem 1.13 (Cayley). Any finite group G is isomorphic to a subgroup of Sn for some n. Proof. Let n = jGj, and fix a bijection f1; : : : ; ng ! G such that G = fg1; : : : ; gng. Given g 2 G, 8i9j such that ggi = gj. Corollary 1.14. Every finite group is isomorphic to a subgroup of GLn(R) for n = jGj. Proof.     NEARLY LOCALLY PRESENTABLE CATEGORIES L. POSITSELSKI AND J. ROSICKY´ Abstract. We introduce a new class of categories generalizing locally presentable ones. The distinction does not manifest in the abelian case and, assuming Vopˇenka’s principle, the same happens in the regular case. The category of complete partial orders is the natural example of a nearly locally finitely presentable category which is not locally presentable. 1. Introduction Locally presentable categories were introduced by P. Gabriel and F. Ulmer in [6]. A category K is locally λ-presentable if it is cocomplete and has a strong generator consisting of λ-presentable objects. Here, λ is a regular cardinal and an object A is λ-presentable if its hom-functor K(A, −): K → Set preserves λ-directed colimits. A category is locally presentable if it is locally λ-presentable for some λ. This con- cept of presentability formalizes the usual practice – for instance, finitely presentable groups are precisely groups given by finitely many generators and finitely many re- lations. Locally presentable categories have many nice properties, in particular they are complete and co-wellpowered. Gabriel and Ulmer [6] also showed that one can define locally presentable categories by using just monomorphisms instead all morphisms. They defined λ-generated ob- jects as those whose hom-functor K(A, −) preserves λ-directed colimits of monomor- phisms. Again, this concept formalizes the usual practice – finitely generated groups are precisely groups admitting a finite set of generators. Every ring extension of A by R induces a pair of group ho- ∗ ∗ momorphisms L : R → EndZ(A)/L(A); R : R → EndZ(A)/R(A), preserving multiplication, satisfying some certain conditions. A such 4-tuple (R, A, L∗, R∗) is called a ring pre-extension. Each ring pre-extension induces a R-bimodule structure on bicenter KA of ring A, and induces an obstruction k, which is a 3-cocycle of Z-algebra R, with coefficients in R-bimodule KA in the sense of Shukla. Each obstruction k in this sense induces a structure of a regular Ann-category of type (R,KA). This result gives us the first application of Ann- category in extension problems of algebraic structures, as well as in cohomology theories. 1 Introduction Group extension problem has been presented with group of automorphisms Aut(G) and quotient group Aut(G)/In(G) by group of inner automorphisms. It will first recall the notion of an algebra, and investigate the properties of an algebra together with a com- position norm.   • On the Semisimplicity of Group Algebras
    ON THE SEMISIMPLICITY OF GROUP ALGEBRAS ORLANDO E. VILLAMAYOR1 In this paper we find sufficient conditions for a group algebra over a commutative ring to be semisimple. In particular, the case in which the group is abelian is solved for fields of characteristic zero, and, in a more general case, for semisimple commutative rings which are uniquely divisible by every integer. Under similar restrictions on the ring of coefficients, it is proved the semisimplicity of group alge- bras when the group is not abelian but the factor group module its center is locally finite.2 In connection with this problem, we study homological properties of group algebras generalizing some results of M. Auslander [l, Theorems 6 and 9]. In fact, Lemmas 3 and 4 give new proofs of Aus- lander's Theorems 6 and 9 in the case C=(l). 1. Notations. A group G will be called a torsion group if every ele- ment of G has finite order, it will be called locally finite if every finitely generated subgroup is finite and it will be called free (or free abelian) if it is a direct sum of infinite cyclic groups. Direct sum and direct product are defined as in [3]. Given a set of rings Ri, their direct product will be denoted by J{Ri. S. PASSMAN Let © be a finite group, £ a commutative ring with one and S[@] the group ring of © over S. If ξ> is a group with © = £ then clearly S[(S] = S[£>] where the latter is an S-iso- morphism. We study here the converse question: For which groups © and rings S does £[©] ^ S[ξ>] imply that © is iso- morphic to £)? We consider first the case where S = K is a field. It is known that if © is abelian then Q[@] = Q[ξ>] implies that © = §> where Q is the field of rational numbers. We show here that this result does not extend to all groups ©. In fact by a simple counting argument we exhibit a large set of noniso- morphic p-groups with isomorphic group algebras over all noncharacteristic p fields. Thus for groups in general the only fields if interest are those whose characteristic divides the order of the group. We now let S = R be the ring of integers in some finite algebraic extension of the rationale. We show here that the group ring R[@>] determines the set of normal subgroups of © along with many of the natural operations defined on this set. For example, under the assumption that © is nilpotent, we show that given normal subgroups 3Dΐ and 9ΐ, the group ring determines the commutator subgroup (3JI, 91). Finally we consider several special cases. In particular we show that if © is nilpotent of class 2 then R[(g\ = β[§] implies © = €>.
