  • A PRAGMATIC APPROACH to BRITISH and AMERICAN ENTERTAINMENT and CELEBRITY NEWS REPORTS Prof
British Journal of English Linguistics Vol.6, No.6, pp.48-71, December 2018 ___Published by European Centre for Research Training and Development UK (www.eajournals.org) A PRAGMATIC APPROACH TO BRITISH AND AMERICAN ENTERTAINMENT AND CELEBRITY NEWS REPORTS Prof. Fareed Hameed Al-Hindawi (Ph.D.) and Manar Kareem Mehdi (Ph.D. Student) University of Babylon, College of Education for Human Sciences, Department of English ABSTRACT: Entertainment news reports are composed of news stories of interest taken from the entertainment industry, about filming and television projects, interviews with actors, musicians and other entertainment personalities and entertainment newsmakers. This type of news aims at amusing the audience and entertaining them by incorporating human interest stories about celebrities' lives in addition to their activities. Despite the pervasive interest in this type of genre, it has not been thoroughly investigated from a pragmatic standpoint. Consequently, this paper endeavors to pinpoint the pragmatic aspects of the language utilized in British and American entertainment and celebrity news reports. Precisely, this work sets itself the task of answering the following question: what are the pragmatic aspects of this kind of discourse? Accordingly, the study aims at identifying the most prevalent pragmatic aspects utilized in the manufacturing of entertainment and celebrity news reports and finding the interdifferences between British and American news reports of this kind. In accordance with these aims, it is hypothesized that entertainment and celebrity news reporters exploit certain pragmatic techniques such as presupposition, allusion, and conversational implicature to achieve their ultimate goal of attracting as many viewers as possible. In order to achieve the aims of this paper and test its hypothesis, a model is developed for the analysis of the data under scrutiny.

  • 9 Superheroes Who Have Taken Over the Small Screen Superheroes Explode Onto Silver Screens Several Times a Year
9 Superheroes Who Have Taken Over The Small Screen Superheroes explode onto silver screens several times a year. The list of superheroes on screen is ever expanding. It wasn’t all that long ago when Superman was Christopher Reeves and Batman was a revolving door of men from Michael Keaton to George Clooney. Since 2000, Marvel has taken the silver screen by storm with their X-men franchise and the Avengers universe. In contrast, the small screen seemed not to fair as well with live-action hero shows until the airing of Smallville in 2001. Even then, it wasn’t until Smallville ended in 2011 that more superheroes started fighting crime every week on our television and computer screens. Let’s take a look at the superheroes of the small screen. Arrow (2012-present) After Smallville ended, a gap in superhero shows appeared and Arrow took its place. Although Green Arrow had originally been part of the Smallville universe, the producers started with a clean slate and hired Stephen Amell to play Oliver Queen/Green Arrow. The show, now in its fourth season, has created two spin-offs to expand the universe and its growing list of DC superheroes. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013-present) After the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the first Avengers film, Marvel decided to create a series with Coulson leading a group of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. The events of the movies and the show overlap; everything is one huge Marvel experience. In the first season, Thor and Captain America: the Winter Solider affected aspects of the series.

  • EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Decapitation
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Decapitation. Dismemberment. Serial killers. Graphic gore. Hey, Kids! COMICS!! Since the release of The Dark Knight film series and the 22 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, comic-book characters have become wildly popular in other forms of entertainment, particularly television. But broadcast TV’s representations of comic-book characters are no longer the bright, colorful, and optimistic figures of the past. Children are innately attracted to comic-book characters; but in today’s comic book-based programs, children are being exposed to graphic violence, profanity, dark and intense themes, and other inappropriate content. In this research report, the PTC examined comic book-themed prime-time programming on the maJor broadcast networks during November, February, and May “sweeps” periods from November 2012 through May 2019. Programs examined were Fox’s Gotham; CW’s Arrow, Black Lightning, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends oF Tomorrow, and Riverdale; and ABC’s Marvel’s Agents oF S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Agent Carter, and Marvel’s Inhumans. Research data suggest that broadcast television programs based on these comic-book characters, created and intended for children, are increasingly inappropriate and/or unsafe for young viewers. In its research, the PTC found the following during the study period: • In comic book-themed programming with particular appeal to children, young viewers were exposed to over 6,000 incidents of violence, over 500 deaths, and almost 2,000 profanities. • The most violent program was CW’s Arrow. Young viewers witnessed 1,241 acts of violence, including 310 deaths, 280 instances of gun violence, and 26 scenes of people being tortured.

H-Announce Edited Collection: The CW Network Announcement published by Lisa Perdigao on Friday, June 23, 2017 Type: Call for Papers Date: August 1, 2017 Subject Fields: Communication, Cultural History / Studies, Journalism and Media Studies, Popular Culture Studies Call for Papers: The CW Network The CW network offers a compelling coming of age story reflective of its changing demographic. In 2006, the network was launched as a joint venture of CBS and Warner Bros. Entertainment and next generation to The WB and UPN (1995-2006), which followed Fox’s success and shift in television broadcasting away from the Big Three (ABC, CBS, and NBC) and toward young viewers. The CW’s early programming borrowed from The WB and UPN, airing the final seasons of 7th Heaven (The WB: 1996-2006; The CW: 2006-2007), Gilmore Girls (The WB: 2000-2006: The CW: 2006-2007), and Veronica Mars (UPN: 2004-2006; The CW: 2006-2007) and continuing longer runs withSmallville (The WB: 2001-2006; The CW: 2006-2011), One Tree Hill (The WB: 2003-2006; The CW: 2006-2012), America’s Next Top Model (UPN: 2003-2006; The CW: 2006-2015), andSupernatural (The WB: 2005-2006; The CW: 2006- ). However, in its early years, it also introduced new seriesGossip Girl (2007-2012) and The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017), which helped to define the emerging network and establish its brand identity. The premiere of Arrow in 2012 and expansion of the Arrowverse with The Flash (2014- ), Legends of Tomorrow (2016- ), and acquisition of Supergirl (CBS: 2015-2016; The CW: 2016- ) led to the network’s self-identification as the “destination of superhero television.” Initially marketed as “TV to Talk About,” The CW has redefined itself as “TV Now” (2012), and, most recently, encourages its viewers to “Dare to Defy” (2016), introducing popular and critically- acclaimed programming that reflects the network’s strategies of adaptation and innovation.
