Dear Patrons of the Scottsdale International Film Festival,

Now entering our 9th year, The Festival continues to program great foreign, great art house and great independent film with a boutique-y touch, per the raison d'etre. This year, “Around the World in Five Days” -- is our lofty theme and ambition -- and I submit that the idea has really taken flight. One look at the cover of this year’s Program Guide tells you the entire tale of how you will experience the next several days. And while queuing in movie lines, why don't you pass the time by musing with your neighbors on the nationality of each balloon's flag on this year’s cover art and poster. Many of you will be delighted to know that I have heard the hue and cry to present the OSCAR®contending films from last year’s foreign film race. Your words have served as the inspiration for this year's special section of 9 Academy Award submissions. Among the slated films are Zift from Bulgaria and Tengri from Kyrgyzstan. They are notable not just as former OSCAR®hopefuls, but also as the latest addition to the growing list of 53 countries represented in The Festival. The appearance of legendary Director and star Tanna Frederick is another reason to soar. They will present their film Irene in Time and participate in a Q&A with the audience. The film shows once, so Jaglom fans and innocents alike should set their course accordingly. Thank you for your continuing support of the Scottsdale International Film Festival. We do it all for you!

“Up, Up and Away...”

Henry Jaglom - IRENE IN TIME Born in England in 1941, Henry Jaglom settled in the USA with his parents in the mid-1940s. He trained with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio in New York and performed in off-Broadway theater and cabaret before settling in Hollywood in the mid 1960's. Under contract to Columbia Pictures, Jaglom guest-starred in numerous TV shows which included “Gidget” and “The Flying Nun,” and appeared in various roles as a character actor in a number of films which included “Psych-Out,” "The 1000 Plane Raid,” “Drive, He Said,” and Orson Welles’ never completed “The Other Side of the Wind.” Jaglom began his film making career working with Jack Nicholson on the editing of Dennis Hopper’s “Easy Rider,” and made his writing/di- recting debut in 1971 with “,” a film about a woman trying to find her place in the world. Jaglom's directing is considered unique and different for he considers his films ‘actors films.’ Being trained in acting, Jaglom also co-starred in four of his most personal films - “Always, But Not Forever” (1985), "Someone to Love” (1987) starring Orson Welles in his farewell film performance, “New Year's Day” (1989), and “Venice/Venice” (1992). In 1990, Jaglom directed “Eating” about a group of women with eating disorders and how they cope with it and one another. “” (1995), was about the issue of women with ticking biological clocks. “Last Summer on the Hamptons” (1996) was the Chekhovian look at the life of a theatrical family and starred Vivica Lindfors in her last screen role. “Deja Vu” (1998) was about the yearning of people trying to find their perfect soul mate. “Festival in Cannes” (2002) explored the lives and relationships of those involved in the world of filmmaking and was shot entirely at the Cannes International Film Festival. “” (2005), was the third part of Jaglom’s “Women's Trilogy.” Jaglom's last film, “Hollywood Dreams” (2007), dealt with a young woman’s obsession with fame in the film industry, starring Tanna Frederick who is seen in Jaglom’s "Irene in Time.” ~ www.rainbowfilms.com

Tanna Frederick - IRENE IN TIME Tanna Frederick began her acting career early in life at the Stebens’ Children’s Theatre in Iowa; she later graduated from the University of Iowa with Honors in both Political Science and Theatre Arts, as well as being Valedictorian of her Liberal Arts graduating class and president of Phi Beta Kappa. Subsequent theatrical experience includes leading roles in N. Richard Nash’s “Echoes” and Henry Jaglom's “A Safe Place,” both produced in Los Angeles; and major roles in “Why We Have a Body,” “Cat’s Paw,” “Jack and Jill,” “The Maids” and “Toussaint: For the Love of Freedom.” Ms. Frederick made her screen debut starring in Henry Jaglom’s film, “Hollywood Dreams” and is in pre-production on her third film with Jaglom, “Queen of the Lot.” ~ www.tannafrederick.com

Nicholas Wentworth - STRATEGY OF THE SNAIL As motion picture Film Editor Mr. Wentworth has edited over 30 feature films in Europe, the United States and South America, starting out in the cutting room with Orson Welles on “Chimes at Midnight,” and later editing “Treasure Island,” with Welles starring as Long John Silver. Other films include “Dorian Gray,” “She,” “Night Hair Child,” “Buckeye and Blue,” “No Se Lo Digas a Nadie,” “Second Skin,” “Girl From Rio,” and for Colombian Director Sergio Cabrera "Strategy of the Snail,” “Ilona Arrives with the Rain,” and “Golpe De Estadio” (TIME OUT). In 2003, Mr. Wentworth assumed the responsibilities of Managing Director of Theatre First Foundation’s Off Broadway complex Century Center for the Performing Arts in Manhattan. With the Foundation’s move to Phoenix, Arizona, he has coordinated the Foundation’s philanthropic activities in Mexico.

Deborah Harse - MARATHON BEIRUT, FOR THE LOVE OF LEBANON With curiosity as the main impetus, Deborah Harse began exploring the world by bicycle in 1981, and continued to travel back and forth from her home in NYC to Europe, North Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Working mostly as a massage therapist, she saved money and then set off, with bike, for several months, to another part of the world. In 1988 photography became the focal point of her travels, and she developed long term projects that resulted in several exhibitions. In 2005 Deborah took the intensive “Platypus Workshop” in digital video, and went directly from making a five minute student piece to shooting, producing and directing a 73 minute documentary called “Marathon Beirut, for the Love of Lebanon”. The project took a year and a half and was completed in May, 2008. ~ www.deborahharse.com

Jeremy Gilley wants to save the world, and after viewing this film you just may want to join him. THE DAY AFTER PEACE tells the inspiring story of Gilley's idealistic notion for creating a World Day of Peace. From naïve beginnings in his native London, his quest leads him to the UN, the League of Arab States, Angelina Jolie, and eventually even the Taliban. Eighteen-year old Desie, with her bleached blond frizz and clothing that borders on the illegal, would seem an unlikely best friend for Dunya, whose conservative Muslim family looks a little ill at the mere sight of Desie. Despite their differences, the two girls have forged a close and devoted friendship. But when an unplanned pregnancy puts the friends on a cross- cultural collision course, can their love and respect for each other endure the pressure of family and tradition? Based on the award-winning television series, DESIE & DUNYA packs a considerable wallop, examining complex ideas with an unforced cheer and bracing honesty. It's a powerful package and those used to seeing teenage girls depicted as brainless shopping zom- bies, manipulative bitches or, even worse, Disney-fied Stepford robots (“I'm looking at you, High School Musical”) will be very pleasantly surprised. ~ Vancouver International Film Festival Principal Cast: Maryam Hassouni, Eva van de Wijdeven, Christine van Stralen, Theo Maassen Writer: Robert Alberdingk Thijm Producer: Joost de Vries Courtesy of: Cinematographer: Bert Pot Editor: JP Luijsterburg Music: Steve Willaert Website: www.dunyaendesiedefilm.nl shows: 4:05pm 10/06/09 theatre 1

The Silence Before Bach (Die Stille vor Bach)

THE SILENCE BEFORE BACH is a “cool, deliberate film suggesting that Bach's music is the quintessence of European civilization. At once cerebral film essay K B, and unsweetened ear candy, Portabella's film is nearly as tough to categorize as its maker.” ~ Village Voice
