Geological Heritage B1 General geological description of the proposed Geopark The Black Country is situated in the centre of England adjacent to the city of Birmingham in the West Midlands (Figure. 1 page 2) .The current proposed geopark headquarters is Dudley Museum and Art Gallery which has the office of the geopark coordinator and hosts spectacular geological collections of local fossils. The geological galleries were opened by Charles Lapworth (founder of the Ordovician System) in 1912 and the museum carries out annual programmes of geological activities, exhibitions and events (see accompanying supporting information disc for additional detail). The museum now hosts a Black Country Geopark Project information point where the latest information about activities in the geopark area and information to support a visit to the geopark can be found. Fergus Carr 2505361 History and Theory The changing face of economics and the consequences for industry In this essay I am going to study the way in which a changing economy affects the architecture of industry. I am going to examine the change of use of the Peek Freans biscuit factory in Bermondsey from confectionary manufactory (use class B2) to offices and studios (use class B1). It is a fact that industrial units are redeveloped when the existing infrastructure becomes outdated or outmoded. However, I feel that there may be more to the redevelopment of the Bermondsey site than may meet the eye. Firstly I would like to address the question of classical economics, which relied upon the belief that “the pursuit of individual self interest produced the greatest possible economic benefits for society as a whole, through the power of the invisible hand”.1 This meant that the state would have a laissez-faire policy towards the regulation of industry. That it was the captains of Industry that provided capital for cultural and community projects such as art galleries, museums and more pertinently social housing, which gave rise to the creation and development of communities based entirely on the local industry, examples of which can be found In the chocolate company Cadbury’s model village Bourneville near Birmingham, tobacco company RJ Reynolds in Winston-Salem in the USA and Peek Freans “Biscuit Town” of Bermondsey in London, to name but a few of the most pertinent examples. This walk (around five kilometres/three miles) will take approximately 90 minutes, or a further 40 minutes if you choose to do the full racecourse circuit. It explores the southern stretch of the River Ouse in York. The commentary considers the impact of the river on the development of the City, the redevelopment of the iconic Terry’s Chocolate Works, and the importance of horse racing. It is full of variety, and includes elements of geography and geology as well as much about the history of the area. We have designed the walk to start at the Millennium Bridge, on the west side of the River Ouse, but you can start it at any point. The starting point is easily reached from the city centre on foot or bicycle, or the 11, 21 and 26 buses travel from the railway station along Bishopthorpe Road. If coming by car, you can park free on Campleshon Road or Knavesmire Road. For some background, follow this link for the Ordnance Survey map published in 1853 (https://maps.nls.uk/view/102344815) you will see that this area was almost all fields at this time. Then look at the Ordnance Survey map published in 1932 (https://maps.nls.uk/view/100945733) where you will see many changes. Perhaps the best place for a drink and something to eat is the Winning Post on Bishopthorpe Road (just a couple of hundred metres north of the junction with Campleshon Road).
