Of Gods and Men
Mongrel Media Presents OF GODS AND MEN A Film by Xavier Beauvois (120 min., France, 2010) Distribution Publicity Bonne Smith 1028 Queen Street West Star PR Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M6J 1H6 Tel: 416-488-4436 Tel: 416-516-9775 Fax: 416-516-0651 Fax: 416-488-8438 E-mail: [email protected] E-mail: [email protected] www.mongrelmedia.com High res stills may be downloaded from http://www.mongrelmedia.com/press.html SYNOPSIS Eight French Christian monks live in harmony with their Muslim brothers in a monastery perched in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps though the region. The army offers them protection, but the monks refuse. Should they leave? Despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowly realize that they have no choice but to stay… come what may. This film is loosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria, from 1993 until their kidnapping in 1996. PREAMBLE In 1996 the kidnapping and murder of the seven French monks of Tibhirine was one of the culminating points of the violence and atrocities in Algeria resulting from the confrontation between the government and extremist terrorist groups that wanted to overthrow it. The disappearance of the monks – caught in a vice between both sides- had a great and long-lasting effect on the governments, religious communities and international public opinion. The identity of the murderers and the exact circumstances of the monks‟ deaths remain a mystery to this day. -

ENG 494: the Essay-Film's Recycling Of
Nandini Chandra, Study Abroad Application Location Specific Course Proposal The Essay-Film’s Recycling of “Waste”: Lessons from the Left Bank *ENG 494: Study Abroad (3) The essay film shuns the mimetic mode, opting to construct a reality rather than reproduce one. Some of its signature tools in this project are: experimental montage techniques, recycling of still photographs, and the use of found footage to immerse the viewer in an alternative and yet uncannily plausible reality. Chris Marker, Alain Resnais, and Agnes Varda are three giants of this genre who shaped this playful filmic language in France. The essay-film is their paradoxical contribution to crafting a collective experience out of the minutiae of individual self-expressions. Our course will focus particularly on this trio of directors’ self-reflexive and heretical relationship with the theme of “waste”— industrial, cultural and human—which forms a central preoccupation in their films. Many of these films use the trope of travel to show wastelands created by the history of capitalist wars and colonialism. We will examine the diverse ways in which the essay-film alters our understanding of “waste” and turns it into something mysteriously productive. This in turn leads us to the question of the “surplus population”—those thrown out of the circuits of capitalist production and left to fend for themselves—as a source of potentially utopian possibilities. Capitalism’s well-known “creative destruction” is ironically paralleled by these films’ focus on the productivity of waste products, and the creative powers of capitalism’s outcastes. 1. The course will historiciZe the critical-lyrical practice of the essay-film, looking at the films themselves as well as key scholarship on essay-films. -
43E Festival International Du Film De La Rochelle Du 26 Juin Au 5 Juillet 2015 Le Puzzle Des Cinémas Du Monde
Katyn Crime Had Been Committed
Katyń 80th anniversary a reminder of the crimes of Soviet Russia committed against Poles in 1937-1941 Created by: Andrzej Burghardt Zbigniew Koralewski Krzysztof Wąż © COPYRIGHT 2021 Coalition of Polish Americans Knowledge of the history of Poland, our country of origin, including the tragedies of which Katyn is a symbol, is an extremely important element of the sense of national community. For a numer of reasons, the history of Poland, especially the period of World War II, is distorted and deformed, also in the United States, so we must strive to learn the truth about these events. This presentation will acquaint you closer with: Polish Operation; secret protocol between Germany and Russia; Hitler's orders; methods of extermination of the Polish nation; the Katyn massacre; deportations of Poles to Siberia; hiding and falsifying the truth about the Katyn genocide and deportations to Siberia. Polish Operation by NKVD in 1937 „Polish Operation” was carried out by the NKVD (communist secret police) two years before the Second World War. It consisted in arresting of people of Polish origin who lived within the domain of Soviet Russia. According to the documents, almost 240,000 people were imprisoned at that time, of which almost half were murdered, the rest were sentenced to stay in labor camps or deported to Kazakhstan and Siberia. Victims of the NKVD „Polish Operation” The action covered all suspected of Polish origin. Poles were killed or deported for only one reason: because they were Poles. This served as a model for organizing later mass arrests, forced resettlements and murders such as in Katyn. -
