Sustainable land management – Sea Lake, Hopetoun and Waitchie David Moody, Jodie Odgers and Bobby Liston, BCG Take home messages • Yield Prophet®- the crop simulation model- is a great tool for assessing crop risk and predicting potential yields. • For renovating overgrazed perennial pasture paddocks, the sowing of cereals is a low risk strategy. • Pasture establishment is extremely difficult in the Mallee in years with limited spring rainfall. • Cereal biomass production may be greater by an order of 10 times than either perennial or leguminous pastures in the first year of establishment. • Best pasture options for a June sowing in terms of biomass in the first year of establishment are either forage brassica or Italian Ryegrass. Background In order to measure and report the potential impact of best management practices for dryland agriculture in the Mallee, six demonstration sites were established in 2005, and a seventh (Sea Lake) was established in 2006. The sites at Sea Lake, Hopetoun, Waitchie, Carwarp, Cowangie, Chinkapook and Walpeup represent a range of land and farming systems. Each site tackles one or more of the various aspects of sustainable agriculture such as salinity management, soil erosion, soil health and nutrient management. BCG is responsible for monitoring and assists with the implementation of best management practices for the Sea Lake, Hopetoun and Waitchie sites. In 2007, all three sites underwent extensive soil sampling and analysis prior to sowing. Throughout the year measurements of the following factors were taken; comparative productivity, water use efficiency, ground water, water use and balance, soil nutrition, soil biota, crop biomass and yields. Sea Lake Demonstration Site The site is 118ha in size and situated 1 km south east of the Sea Lake township.

  • Parish and Township Plan Numbers
Parish and Township plan numbers This is a complete list of Victorian parishes and townships, together with plan numbers assigned by the Victorian Department of Crown Lands and Survey at some point between 1950 and 1970. The list has been reproduced from the Vicmap Reference Tables on the Department of Sustainability and Environment's land information website. Browse the list or use a keyword search to identify the plan number/s for a location. The plans are listed alphabetically. Townships and parishes are inter-sorted on the list. Some entries refer to locations within parishes or townships; these entries may be duplicated. The plan number can be used to locate copies of plans that PROV holds in the series VPRS 16171 Regional Land Office Plans Digitised Reference Set. For example, using the Search within a Series page on the PROV online catalogue with series number '16171' and the text '5030' will return the specific plans relating to the township of Ballarat. In this case, searching for 'Ballaarat' by name will return al the plans in the Ballarat land district, covering much of central and western Victoria. PROV does not hold copies of plans for the locations highlighted in pale yellow below. In most cases this is because parish-level plans were not created for areas such as national parks, where there were few land transactions to record. Plans showing these locations can be downloaded from the landata website under the section 'Central Plan Office Records'. 5001 Township of Aberfeldy 2016 Parish of Angora 2001 Parish of Acheron 2017

  • Chapter 3. Landscape, People and Economy
Chapter 3. Landscape, people and economy Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning 3. Landscape, people and economy Victoria’s North and Murray Water Resource Plan applies to surface water resources in the Northern Victoria and Victorian Murray water resource plan areas, and groundwater resources in Goulburn-Murray water resource plan area. This chapter provides a brief description of the landscape, people and economic drivers in the water resource plan areas. Working rivers The rivers of this water resource plan area provide many environmental, economic, and social benefits for Victorian communities. Most of northern Victoria’s rivers have been modified from their natural state to varying degrees. These modifications have affected hydrologic regimes, physical form, riparian vegetation, water quality and instream ecology. Under the Basin Plan it is not intended that these rivers and streams be restored to a pre-development state, but that they are managed as ‘working rivers’ with agreed sustainable levels of modification and use and improved ecological values and functions. 3.1 Features of Victorian Murray water resource plan area The Victorian Murray water resource plan area covers a broad range of aquatic environments from the highlands in the far east, to the Mallee region in the far west of the state. There are several full river systems in the water resource plan area, including the Kiewa and Mitta Mitta rivers. Other rivers that begin in different water resource plan areas converge with the River Murray in the Victorian Murray water resource plan area. There are a significant number of wetlands in this area, these wetlands are managed by four catchment management authorities (CMAs): Goulburn Broken, Mallee CMAs, North Central and North East and their respective land managers.

  • 4. Boort and Beyond
    4. Boort and Beyond Gavan Daws Gavan Daws was professor and head of Department of Pacific and Southeast Asian History in the Research School of Pacific Studies, The Australian National University, from 1974 to 1989. This remembrance is based on words written to be spoken at Hank’s memorial in 2012. My first sighting of Hank was in the late 1960s, briefly, during a stopover in Port Moresby. The next time was 1974, when I came to work at ANU. My office was in the Coombs Building, and so was Hank’s – though I might never have known he was there. The Coombs was designed as three interlocking three- storey hexagons, structurally joined at the hip but functionally divided into two research schools. Hank was in one, Social Sciences; I was in the other, Pacific Studies . Different turfs, different territories, different disciplines, different departments, scores of academics in scores of offices along corridors going in six different directions, on different levels, with different entries and exits. One day, Hank and I happened to bump into each other at a landing on the stairs. We got to talking, and it turned out that we had some things in common. The two of us were pretty much of an age, we were both from Victoria, and we were both country boys – you could tell by our triphthongs. So there were natural connections. But there were degrees of separation too. Hank was from Boort; I was from Dimboola. From one to the other it was a bit over a hundred miles, as the crow might fly.
