Sustainable land management – Sea Lake, Hopetoun and Waitchie David Moody, Jodie Odgers and Bobby Liston, BCG Take home messages • Yield Prophet®- the crop simulation model- is a great tool for assessing crop risk and predicting potential yields. • For renovating overgrazed perennial pasture paddocks, the sowing of cereals is a low risk strategy. • Pasture establishment is extremely difficult in the Mallee in years with limited spring rainfall. • Cereal biomass production may be greater by an order of 10 times than either perennial or leguminous pastures in the first year of establishment. • Best pasture options for a June sowing in terms of biomass in the first year of establishment are either forage brassica or Italian Ryegrass. Background In order to measure and report the potential impact of best management practices for dryland agriculture in the Mallee, six demonstration sites were established in 2005, and a seventh (Sea Lake) was established in 2006. The sites at Sea Lake, Hopetoun, Waitchie, Carwarp, Cowangie, Chinkapook and Walpeup represent a range of land and farming systems. Each site tackles one or more of the various aspects of sustainable agriculture such as salinity management, soil erosion, soil health and nutrient management. BCG is responsible for monitoring and assists with the implementation of best management practices for the Sea Lake, Hopetoun and Waitchie sites. In 2007, all three sites underwent extensive soil sampling and analysis prior to sowing. Throughout the year measurements of the following factors were taken; comparative productivity, water use efficiency, ground water, water use and balance, soil nutrition, soil biota, crop biomass and yields. Sea Lake Demonstration Site The site is 118ha in size and situated 1 km south east of the Sea Lake township. -

Anderson’s remarks on the subject, “R.G.K.” (Richmond) says that he has just had a “fortnight’s fishing in the Broken River and various creeks around Lima (via Benalla) Although he had good sport with Murray cod, bream (Macquarie perch), and catfish, which he remarks is a far finer table fish than is generally realised, he noticed, too, how numerous were the blackfish. He must have hooked over a hundred, but returned them all to the river, as according to the Game Laws, they may not be kept under 8 inches, and very few of these were eight inches, many as small as four inches. Had “R.G.K.” known, he might have kept these fish, because an exception is made about them. The regulation reads:- “Blackfish, except those in streams flowing north from the Great Dividing Range, 8 1/2 inches.” These blackfish are a smaller species or variety, and the Fisheries department imposes no conditions in regard to them. DUCK HUNTING IN VICTORIA 2020 Background The Wildlife (Game) Regulations 2012 provide for an annual duck season running from 3rd Saturday in March until the 2nd Monday in June in each year (80 days in 2020) and a 10 bird bag limit. Section 86 of the Wildlife Act 1975 enables the responsible Ministers to vary these arrangements. The Game Management Authority (GMA) is an independent statutory authority responsible for the regulation of game hunting in Victoria. Part of their statutory function is to make recommendations to the relevant Ministers (Agriculture and Environment) in relation to open and closed seasons, bag limits and declaring public and private land open or closed for hunting. A number of factors are reviewed each year to ensure duck hunting remains sustainable, including current and predicted environmental conditions such as habitat extent and duck population distribution, abundance and breeding. This review however, overlooks several reports and assessments which are intended for use in managing game and hunting which would offer a more complete picture of habitat, population, abundance and breeding, we will attempt to summarise some of these in this submission, these include: • 2019-20 Annual Waterfowl Quota Report to the Game Licensing Unit, New South Wales Department of Primary Industries • Assessment of Waterfowl Abundance and Wetland Condition in South- Eastern Australia, South Australian Department for Environment and Water • Victorian Summer waterbird Count, 2019, Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research As a key stakeholder representing 17,8011 members, Field & Game Australia Inc. (FGA) has been invited by GMA to participate in the Stakeholder Meeting and provide information to assist GMA brief the relevant Ministers, FGA thanks GMA for this opportunity. -
