3 Buzzards Bay Tri – Athlete Packet SWIM COURSE 66 Degrees Ocean Swim Prep Wetsuits Recommended

The Swim Course is an Ocean swim and is fun for all competitors. There are a few things to keep in mind when in the ocean:

• Swim Start – Beach Start – seed yourself according to ability. If you’re not a super strong swimmer position yourself in the back and let strong swimmers enter the water after the bull horn sounds. • Waves – It is the ocean and there will likely be 100 yards of break water that you’ll need to manage to get to the first turn buoy. How do you handle swimming through waves?

o Duck!– When waves approach, it’s easier to duck under the waves versus jump through or over them. Breast Stroke when under a wave and prepare for the next series of swells. • Sighting – Use the buoys to sight early and often so you do not go off course. When swimming parallel to shore, look toward Gooseberry Island where the Run Course is laid out. You’ll see a series of White Colored houses. Use this as your sighting point. • Breathing – The waves will be breaking on your RIGHT side, so if you’re not a bilateral breather, be prepared to have some swells hit your face. • Swim Exit - Time your exit along with the waves, to help push you back to shore. This is what makes ocean swimming a lot fun, you’re a kid again body back to shore!

Bike Course

Fontaine Bridge

As you drive to the race site, you’ll pass over the beautiful Fontaine Bridge, which is roughly 1 mile from the race site. There are some amazing views of the Bay! This is the same bridge you’ll pass on the Bike Course. When crossing this bridge during the Race, you MUST:

• SLOW your speed considerably. • Use the defined bike lane to cross the grates (which will be covered for safe travel) • Do not pass other bikers when approaching the grates We know that everyone will follow these rules, making for a safe race, however race officials will penalize any violators.

Race Day Assistance Charitable

Partners It’s easy – we’re wearing shirts & jackets with Max Performance logo or Event Staff on it. Police and EMS staff will also be at the race if an emergency arises.

Weather Policy Reminder Knocking on wood while we type this, but consistent with the sport of triathlon, the waiver states that if the race is cancelled due to really, really bad weather, there are no refunds. This is due to everything being paid for prior to race day. We all have to share in the risk of dangerous weather. It would have to be DANGEROUS to run the race for us to cancel.

Max Bike Rack Graphics

Tired of Fighting for Space in Transition? We’ve got plenty of room!

Here are the facts you need to know about our bike racks:

• Athletes will find their designated bike rack by race number • You are not assigned a specific slot, so take any slot in your row. • Only rack your back tire to conform to the design. • You must alternate the direction of bikes (See helpful pictures). • In order to safely rack your bike, you must be in the small chain ring. • If you have a , we have adapters to make it work, just ask! • Our staff will be available in Transition to answer any questions that you have. • Check out our YouTube Video of Bike Rack at www.youtube.com/user/maxperformancetri

15 Buzzards Bay Tri – Athlete Packet USAT Rules Rules & Regulations– Cliff Notes Version

The following rules represent the more salient USAT rules; those closely monitored at most races. The penalties for violation are either time penalties or disqualification. The list below does not represent a comprehensive list, you’re on your own for that - see USAT website.

Helmet - no modifications may be made. Helmets must be worn as they were purchased.

Helmet Chin Straps - must be buckled at all times when on the bicycle. Do not unbuckle your chin straps unless you have gotten off your bike.

Outside Assistance – simply not allowed other than that offered by race and medical officials.

Bike - handle bar "plugs" on bikes used for participation in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event. During bike inspections, prior to the racking of your bike, officials will inspect your bike to see if your handle bar ends are plugged. Try to avoid last minute fixes to this at the race since you’ll have enough nervousness as it is.

Transition Area - all equipment must be placed in the properly designated and individually assigned bike corrals. Max races assign bikes to bike racks based on your bib-race number. All participants must return their bicycles to an upright position in their designated bicycle corral. No person shall interfere with another participant's equipment or impede the progress of another participant. And no glass containers are allowed in the Transition Area.

Drafting – each bike has an “imaginary box.” Put another way, there is a drafting zone two meters wide and seven meters long, beginning at your front wheel. You have 15-seconds to travel by another cyclist’s box and when passing, always pass on the left. Translation – stay three bike lengths behind and pass quickly on the left!

Headphones – it’s a good thing we have great music at the Transition Area, since you’re not allowed any type of headset, headphone, etc. any time during the race.

Race Numbers – should be visible at all times on bike and run, even though chip timing is used.

Course Boundaries – follow the prescribed course and stay within all coned lanes. Do not cross a solid center road line to pass other cyclists. Please obey all traffic laws.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct – refrain from foul, harsh, argumentative, abusive language and other conduct towards volunteers, spectators, fellow athletes, Officials, our dog, etc.

Variable Time Penalties – guess what, they vary. There are different categories and different penalties based on the offense and event race distance. Max RDs and USAT Officials know their stuff, so you can talk to them if you fit in this category at race finish.

Protests – you are allowed to protest to the Head Max RD at the sanctioned event. Everyone makes mistakes, so you never know. Details on the process are in the USAT Handbook.
