  • Sony Pictures Classics Acquires Sundance Favorite Before Midnight
SONY PICTURES CLASSICS ACQUIRES SUNDANCE FAVORITE BEFORE MIDNIGHT NEW YORK (January 25, 2013) - Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they have acquired all North American and UK rights to Richard Linklater’s BEFORE MIDNIGHT, the third installment to BEFORE SUNRISE and BEFORE SUNSET, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. Like BEFORE SUNSET, the third film is written by Academy Award® nominees Linklater, Hawke and Delpy. Premiering to critical acclaim in the Premieres Section on Sunday evening at the Sundance Film Festival, BEFORE MIDNIGHT has been one of the most talked about films at the festival. The film is produced by Linklater, Christos V. Konstantakopoulos and Sara Woodhatch and executive produced by Jacob Pechenik, Martin Shafer, Liz Glotzer, and John Sloss. The deal was negotiated by SPC and Cinetic Media on behalf of the filmmakers. In BEFORE MIDNIGHT, we meet Celine and Jesse 9 years on. Almost 2 decades have passed since that first meeting on a train bound for Vienna, and we now find them in their early 40's in Greece. Before the clock strikes midnight, we will again become part of their story. "In 1991 we were in Sundance with SLACKER and we witnessed the birth of a major American filmmaker. At Sundance 2013 with BEFORE MIDNIGHT, we have further confirmation that Richard Linklater is a film master at the peak of his form. This one has it all as entertainment and as a work of cinematic art. It is a perfect movie made by not one but three auteurs, Rick, Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy. This movie will be incredibly successful around the world.

Hank’s returning to his mother and life in the U.S. after spending the “best summer ever” with Jesse and his family. The middle-schooler is more composed than his fortyish father, who hovers anxiously as their separation draws near. Geography weighs heavily on Jesse. Outside the airport, he rejoins his family: CELINE (Julie Delpy) and their young twin daughters ELLA and NINA (Jennifer and Charlotte Prior). As they drive through the austerely beautiful rocky hillsides of Messinia, Jesse and Celine talk—about living so far from Hank, about her career as an environmentalist and hopes for a new job, about the swirl of ancient and modern Greece around them. Jesse hints at wanting to move back to America from their home in Paris, but Celine has done her U.S. time—they lived in New York for a spell—and has no wish to return. Their long history together bubbles between them. Jesse’s a successful novelist, and they’re in Greece at a writer’s retreat, staying in the bucolic country villa of an older expat writer, PATRICK (Walter Lassally).

  • 1 a TRILOGY of MELANCHOLY on the Bittersweet in Before Sunrise
A TRILOGY OF MELANCHOLY On the bittersweet in Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight Hans Maes NB: This paper will appear in Philosophers on Film: Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight, eds. H.Maes & K. Schaubroeck, Routledge, 2021. This is a draft version. I am currently revising the paper and would welcome any suggestions for improvement. Melancholy is a central expressive property of the Before films and key to understanding and appreciating the trilogy as a whole. That, in a nutshell, is the thesis I wish to develop in this paper. Melancholy is understood here as the profound and bittersweet emotional experience that occurs when we vividly grasp a harsh truth about human existence in such a way that we come to appreciate certain aspects of life more deeply. The various encounters between Celine and Jesse, I will argue, are littered with such moments of melancholy. These moments are partly prompted by the circumstances in which they find themselves, but both of them also actively seek out this experience by the stories they tell and the reflections they engage in. That seems part of who they are as individuals and it may even be part of what attracts them to each other. Melancholy, furthermore, is not just present in the characters’ dialogue and in their facial and bodily expressions, but is also expressed through various cinematic means. And, as I will suggest in the final section, the films may resonate deeply with some viewers because they are so expressive of melancholy. Melancholy In the course of history the term ‘melancholy’ has been used in a variety of ways to refer to a particular character trait, a mood, various sorts of psychological pathologies, and even a form of cultural decline (Bowring 2016).

Ghost-Righting: The Spectral Ethics and Haunted Spouses of Richard Linklater's Before Trilogy Lilia Kilburn Criticism, Volume 60, Number 1, 2018, pp. 1-25 (Article) Published by Wayne State University Press For additional information about this article https://muse.jhu.edu/article/715827 Access provided at 20 Aug 2019 17:24 GMT from Harvard University GHOST-RIGHTING: THE SPECTRAL ETHICS AND HAUNTED SPOUSES OF RICHARD LINKLATER’S BEFORE TRILOGY Lilia Kilburn I. Death, Love’s Amber “All plots tend to move deathward,” wrote Don DeLillo.1 Others have sliced his statement more thinly, noting that this narrative death drive quickens in love stories, where death is often “what passion has yearned after from the beginning.”2 Across the Western canon’s fossil record, death is love’s amber, a preservative that, like its chemical contempo- raries, suspends in time that which tends to degrade in life. In film, like the camera itself, a deceased or distant lover is “freed from the contingen- cies of space and time but then discreetly confin[es] [her]self to codified patterns.”3 If lovers do not die, it is enough for the narrative to prove that they would die should they remain together—a collusion between threat and memory that begets famous romances collapsed into memorializing mantras: “We’ll always have Paris.” This paper is concerned with the disruption of established pattern- ing of love and death—disruption executed by the figure of the ghost. Modeling this disruption is a tripartite love story, Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy—1995’s Before Sunrise, 2004’s Before Sunset, and 2012’s Before Midnight—that invites ghosts in.

Before Midnight (2013) “Still there… still there… still there… Gone.” Major Credits: Director: Richard Linklater Screenplay: Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke Cast: Julie Delpy (Céline), Ethan Hawke (Jesse), Walter Lassally (Patrick), Panos Karonis (Stefanos), Athina Rachel Tsangari (Ariadni), Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick (Hank) Cinematography: Christos Voudouris Production Background: Before Midnight is the third film that follows the romantic relationship between Jesse and Céline, whom Jesse first meets on a train to Vienna in Before Sunrise (1995) and then again in Paris ten years later in Before Sunset (2004). In the first movie, at 23, they fall in love but must part; in the second, at 32, they rekindle their romance. Now they are a couple at the end of a six week summer vacation in Greece. As in the earlier films, Linklater is interested in the passage of time—both the nearly real time (approximately twelve hours) in which they interact and the near decade during which their lives have changed—as well as the quality of their conversation. In its attentiveness to virtually uninterrupted dialogue, the trilogy follows the tradition of the French New Wave director Eric Rohmer’s “Six Moral Tales.” In its compression of time in addition to its sustained conversation, Linklater also has been influenced by the film of another New Wave auteur, Louis Malle, and his great film My Dinner with André (1981). Finally, in its interest in how people change over decades, Before Midnight might be considered a fictional counterpart to Michael Apted’s Up documentary series, currently almost forty years in the making.
