With the Nick record, because I’d worked on a recent spate of live tribute the arrangements are quite formal and the concerts—the first happened about five audiences were respectful, people seemed years ago. I did a tribute concert after [Pink to let the last note die away and then erupt Floyd founding member] Syd Barrett died, in cheers and such, so we felt that we could and I thought it turned out wonderfully. That do it. Also, somebody told us that BBC tilted my psychology about the idea of live Radio 2—the most important outlet in Britain tribute concerts, so when I was asked to for this kind of music—has a rule where they put together a celebration of Nick’s music don’t play tracks with applause. Sometimes at Birmingham Town Hall four years ago, I they dial it out themselves, but we chose to said, “Let’s try it.” And the audience thought take it out instead. it was fantastic, the musicians had a great Maria Muldaur time, and the singers loved getting their teeth If you were back working again with Pink into these songs—and they sounded so good yeah, I love him!” When I asked if she would Floyd in 1967, what would you change? singing them. sing that song, she said that she loved that The main thing I’d do differently would be one as well. I also certify that the thesis has been written by me. Any help that I have received in my research work and the preparation of the thesis itself has been acknowledged. In addition, I certify that all the information sources and literature used are indicated in the thesis. Signature of Candidate 11 Acknowledgements A big thank you to Tony Mitchell for reading everything and coping with my disorganised and rushed state. I'm very appreciative of the Kerouac Conference in Lowell for letting me attend and providing such a unique forum. Thank you to Buster Burk, Gerald Nicosia and the many other Beat scholars who provided some very entertaining e mails and opinions. A big slobbering kiss to all my beautiful friends for letting me crash on couches all over the world and always ringing, e mailing or visiting just when I'm about to explode. Thanks Andre for making me buy that first copy of On the Road. Thank you Tim for the cups of tea and hugs. I'm very grateful to Mum and Dad for trying to make everything as easy as possible. And words or poems are not enough for my brother Simon for those silly months in Italy and turning up at that conference, even if you didn't bother to wear shoes.

It is based on two years of fieldwork research I conducted there between 2006-2008. I approach the formation of the diasporic community in light of utopian visions of a past colored by colonial struggle and high national aspirations, and in light of subsequent political developments that resulted in oppression, exile, and even occupation after 2003. I read the displacement of Iraqis as an example of the failure of the postcolonial state, represented by the emergence of the Baath regime in the 1960s and Saddam Hussein’s rise to power in 1979. Throughout, I examine the heightened salience of sectarianism among Iraqis in exile and in Iraq since the 1990s. Instead of understanding sectarianism as a return to traditional loyalties, I argue that it is deeply linked to the issue of power and identity politics, which the Iraqi opposition to Saddam Hussein’s regime in the UK employed while in exile and institutionalized after the fall of the regime in 2003 with the support of the US Administration. This dissertation is, also, an ethnographic study of Iraq, and aims to make up for the dearth in anthropological studies on Iraq during the last four decades.
