Cambodia birding report April-May 2017 Mikko Pyhälä - 28 June, 2017 Photo below: Male White-rumped Pygmy-falcon, endemic to Indochina While on a holiday in Cambodia with my wife Pia, I was able to make exclusively birding trips with guide and facili@es provided by the Sam Veasna Center (SVC) in the North in Preah Vihear Province and in the South-East in Mondulkiri Province, as well as on my own in the South in the Kep Province. I also birded in the gardens of the capital city Phnom Penh. SVC based in Siem Reap is Cambodia’s oldest and perhaps also the most competent birding company having obtained much praise from WWF, UN, GEF, BirdLife and other organiza@ons. They have been successful in establishing community-based lodges and camps with local services, contribu@ng to local conserva@on consciousness, in par@cular for some of the most endangered birds and animals of the planet. SVC excels in training their guides who are very knowledgeable about birds, work well with local communi@es, and are efficient and polite with their clients. SVC has also been able to avoid conflicts with na@onal authori@es. CAMBODIA BIRDING [email protected] !1 Cambodia is a good target for birding trips as it has a large number of endemics and many cri@cally endangered species, also animals such as the Dolphin, and large primates in the Seima forest. I managed to get 45 lifers, almost all of them from my wish-list which was not very long, given that I had birded earlier in South-Asia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. -

SHELDON Based on distinctive morphological and vocal characters we describe a new species of lowland tailorbird Orthotomus from dense humid lowland scrub in the floodplain of the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac rivers of Cambodia. Genetic data place it in the O. atrogularis–O. ruficeps–O. sepium clade. All data suggest that the new species is most closely related to O. atrogularis, from which genetic differences are apparently of a level usually associated with subspecies. However the two taxa behave as biological species, existing locally in sympatry and even exceptionally in syntopy, without apparent hybridisation. The species is known so far from a small area within which its habitat is declining in area and quality. However, although birds are found in a number of small habitat fragments (including within the city limits of Phnom Penh), most individuals probably occupy one large contiguous area of habitat in the Tonle Sap floodplain. We therefore recommend it is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. The new species is abundant in suitable habitat within its small range. Further work is required to understand more clearly the distribution and ecology of this species and in particular its evolutionary relationship with O. atrogularis. The palpal claw is evaluated as a taxonomic character for 42 species of the spider family Sparassidae and investigated in 48 other spider families for comparative purposes. A pectinate claw appears to be synapomorphic for all Araneae. Elongated teeth and the egg-sac carrying behaviour of the Heteropodinae seem to represent a synapomorphy for this subfamily, thus results of former systematic analyses are supported. One of the Heteropodinae genera, Sinopoda, displays variable character states. According to ontogenetic patterns, shorter palpal claw teeth and the absence of egg-sac carrying behaviour may be secondarily reduced within this genus. Based on the idea of evolutionary efficiency, a functional correlation between the morphological character (elongated palpal claw teeth) and egg-sac carrying behaviour is hypothesized. The palpal claw with its sub-characters is considered to be of high analytical systematic significance, but may also give important hints for taxonomy and phylogenetics. Results from a zoogeographical approach suggest that the sister-groups of Heteropodinae lineages are to be found in Madagascar and east Africa and that Heteropodinae, as defined in the present sense, represents a polyphyletic group. -

Report for 2013. Vogelwarte 53: 229-260. This report is the ninth one of a series and presents the results of a comprehensive literature screening in search for new bird taxa described in 2013, namely new genera, species and subspecies worldwide. We tracked names of ten genera, 25 species and three subspecies (one additional for 2010) new to science which, according to the International Code of Zoological No- menclature were correctly described. On the basis of molecular genetic analyses new genera for species or species groups were proposed within Columbidae (2), Pipridae (1), and Thamnophilidae (7). Though various species concepts are concerned and “species” may have differing biological meanings, the number of 25 new bird species described in a single year is extraordinarily high. It is unsurpassed at least within the last hundred years. The new species refer to Hydrobatidae (1), Tytonidae (1), Strigi- dae (2), Bucconidae (1), Tyrannidae (1), Pipromorphidae (2), Thamnophilidae (5), Rhinocryptidae (1), Dendrocolaptidae (4), Furnariidae (1), Corvidae (1), Cisticolidae (1), Timaliidae (1), Polioptilidae (1), Passerellidae (1), and Thraupidae (1). Five of the new species described refer to Non-Passeriformes, the remainder 20 species to Passeriformes. In several cases the popula- tions in question now considered to represent a new species were known since long. But only substantial studies of their songs, genetics and/or ecology led to description of new formerly unrecognized species. -

Best of Birding Cambodia & Vietnam Trip Report 5th to 22nd December 2014 (18 days) Giant Ibis at Tmatboey by Glen Valentine Trip Report compiled by Tour Leader: Glen Valentine Trip Report - RBT Best of Birding Vietnam & Cambodia 2014 Tour Summary The south-east Asian countries of Cambodia and Vietnam harbour some of Asia’s most tantalizing species, including a host of endemics, near-endemics and other specialties that are tough or impossible to see elsewhere in their limited distributions. Legendary and iconic avian gems such as Giant and White- shouldered Ibis, White-rumped Falcon, Bengal Florican, Greater Adjutant, Black-headed, Great Slaty and Pale-headed Woodpeckers, Germain’s Peacock-Pheasant, Green Peafowl, Bar-bellied Pitta, Red-vented and Indochinese Barbets, Dalat Shrike-babbler, Indochinese Green Magpie, Red-billed Scimitar Babbler, Grey-crowned Crocias by Luyen Nguyen Orange-breasted and Collared Laughingthrushes, Vietnamese Cutia, Grey-crowned Crocias, Yellow-billed Nuthatch and Vietnamese Greenfinch are just some of the many mouth-watering highlights available on this superb birding adventure. We managed to find and obtain good views of all of these species and many more during our challenging but rewarding Cambodia and Vietnam birding tour. This was our adventure… After our pre-tour extension of remote eastern Cambodia, where we enjoyed sightings of such mega-ticks as Cambodian Tailorbird, Mekong Wagtail, Pied Harrier, Great Hornbill, Milky Stork and Irrawaddy Dolphin, we began our main 2 ½ week tour of these two neighbouring countries. The trip focused on the best birding localities and targeted the endemics, near- endemics and other sought-after species on offer in each country. -
