    Cambodia birding report April-May 2017 Mikko Pyhälä - 28 June, 2017 Photo below: Male White-rumped Pygmy-falcon, endemic to Indochina While on a holiday in Cambodia with my wife Pia, I was able to make exclusively birding trips with guide and facili@es provided by the Sam Veasna Center (SVC) in the North in Preah Vihear Province and in the South-East in Mondulkiri Province, as well as on my own in the South in the Kep Province. I also birded in the gardens of the capital city Phnom Penh. SVC based in Siem Reap is Cambodia’s oldest and perhaps also the most competent birding company having obtained much praise from WWF, UN, GEF, BirdLife and other organiza@ons. They have been successful in establishing community-based lodges and camps with local services, contribu@ng to local conserva@on consciousness, in par@cular for some of the most endangered birds and animals of the planet. SVC excels in training their guides who are very knowledgeable about birds, work well with local communi@es, and are efficient and polite with their clients. SVC has also been able to avoid conflicts with na@onal authori@es. CAMBODIA BIRDING [email protected] !1 Cambodia is a good target for birding trips as it has a large number of endemics and many cri@cally endangered species, also animals such as the Dolphin, and large primates in the Seima forest. I managed to get 45 lifers, almost all of them from my wish-list which was not very long, given that I had birded earlier in South-Asia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The Melagiris form part of an almost unbroken stretch of forests connecting Bannerghatta National Park (which forms its north-western boundary) to the forests of Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary - Karnataka (which forms its southern boundary, separated by the river Cauvery), and further to Biligirirangan hills and Sathyamangalam forests. The northern and western parts are comparatively plain and is part of the Mysore plateau. The average elevation in this region is 500-1000 m. Ground sinks to 300m in the valley of the Cauvery and the highest point is the peak of Guthereyan at 1395.11 m. Red sandy loam is the most common soil type found in this region. Small deposits of alluvium are found along Cauvery and Chinnar rivers and Kaoline is found in some areas near Jowlagiri. The temperature ranges from 10°C ± 35°C. South-west monsoon is fairly active mostly in the northern areas, but north-east monsoon is distinctly more effective in the region.

Of the three mass nesting sites along the East coast of India, the Rushikulya rookery may currently have the most regular nesting population of olive ridley turtles and is therefore likely to play a key role in maintaining the Indian Ocean population of the species. The sporadic nesting site of Chennai is completely altered by human activity and represents a set of conditions completely different from those in Rushikulya. Olive ridley turtles in India are protected and have been studied for several years but detailed studies on factors affecting nesting and hatching have not been conducted. The present study examines the effect of temperature and lighting on egg and hatchling survival of the olive ridley turtle. The response of the hatchlings to different lighting regimes on the beach, as well as to specific combinations of wavelength and intensity of light was studied. Hatchlings responded to both intense point sources of light at Rushikulya as well as glows from hidden point sources.

The nodal cutting technique is the most widely used method for large scale propagation of Casuarina, Eucalyptus and other pulpwood species in India. Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) has started large scale multiplication of Casuarina junghuhniana Miq. using mini-cutting technique from indoor clonal mini hedges raised in sand beds. When compared to stem/nodal cuttings, indoor clonal mini hedges raised in sand beds improve the rooting potential, quality of root systems and are time- and cost-saving. The productivity of cuttings is increased five times in indoor clonal hedge orchard than conventional stem/nodal cutting. The rooting percentage also improved to 90% without rooting hormone whereas the same is only 50% in stem cutting. The plant developed through mini-cutting technique has more lateral root system which helps the plants/trees to withstand during heavy winds. Replacing such stump derived stock plants by intensively managing indoor sand bed clonal mini hedges resulted in a noticeable enhancement of cutting capacity for adventitious rooting as well as the overall quality of the plants produced in much shorter period with easier and cheaper maintenance.

Present study was carried out by conducting surveys for locating their nesting sites along coast of Ratnagiri district and 12 nests of White-bellied Sea Eagle Haliaeetus leucogaster at different sites along Velas to Dabhol were studied. Various ecological parameters such as nesting tree species, nesting tree height, nesting tree GBH, nest height, geo-coordinates, distance from coast, disturbance level were considered. WBSE was found to be most abundantly nesting (N =12) on Casuarina equisetifolia tree which, accounts to 83% of the total nesting trees and only 02 nests, just 17% of the total nesting trees studied, were on Sterculia foetida. In most cases, it was observed that WBSEs prefer nest trees with larger GBH as compared to same tree species of smaller girth. Location of nest from the supratidal mark was measured to study nesting preference about distance from the sea and we found that, the nearest nest was 30 m away from the coast and the farthest one was at a distance of around 900 m.

Durham: new to Britain Dougie Holden and Mark Newsome Ren Hathway Abstract Britain’s first Eastern Crowned Warbler Phylloscopus coronatus was discovered at Trow Quarry, South Shields, Co. Durham, on 22nd October 2009, where it remained until 24th October. The South Shields bird followed others in Norway, Finland and the Netherlands between 2002 and 2007, plus one on Helgoland, Germany, in 1843.
