LONG-TERM POPULATION GROWTH IN REGIONAL QUEENSLAND March 2015 LONG-TERM POPULATION GROWTH IN REGIONAL QUEENSLAND 1.0 INTRODUCTION Over a period of time, major changes have been taking place in the distribution of population in regional Queensland outside of the south-east corner of the State. This paper sets out: o This changing pattern and the leading role of Cairns and the Cairns region in this changing pattern; o Why this consistent pattern of change has been happening over a period of time; and o On a continuation of these long-term trends, what regional population in Queensland would look like by 2050. Realities of distances lead to the area being served by a series of regional capitals with distinct commercial servicing regions. Map 1 shows these regional capitals and the commercial regions they serve. In the case of Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Toowoomba, the regional capitals and their commercial servicing areas are fairly clear. Although Rockhampton is the regional capital of the Fitzroy and Central West region, unlike Cairns, Townsville and Mackay, the region’s port is not located at the city, but 100km away at Gladstone. -

SECTION 21 Economic Development Section 21 Economic Development October 2016 21.0 Economic Development 21.1 Introduction The economic environment and the economic impact from the development of the Port Expansion Project (PEP) are discussed in Chapter B.19 (Economic Development) of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The economic assessment discussed the existing and future demand for Port capacity. The assessment defined and assessed a base case against the expected developed port to identify any positive or negative impacts during the construction and operation phases. The estimated economic benefit (in present values), of the Project was estimated to be of around $1,500 million. Socio-economic impacts were also assessed, including housing, commercial fishing, labour markets and employment. This section provides responses to submissions from public consultation and the results of new analysis that identifies the economic role of the Port in the region, and regional risks resulting from capacity constraints of the Port. This chapter section is not intended to represent a business case for the PEP, or an update on an existing business case for the PEP, however the information presented here is required under the Terms of Reference to provide context for economic impacts. Key matters raised within the submission process include: . justification of the need to expand the Port of Townsville in context of present berth utilisation . the role of the port in the economic stability, sustainability and development of North Queensland and the risks and flow-on effects of removing this capacity . consideration of using alternative ports to cater for increased demand, especially any future coal exports . -

WELCOME TO MOBILITY 2018 The Price for a Civilized Society really don’t enjoy paying taxes. When I go out to dinner with friends and the bill comes, you can count on me to jokingly ask, “Who I ordered the tax!” Why do we pay taxes? First, some history. The word tax comes from the Latin word taxare, but the Romans were not the first or only civilization to impose taxes on their people. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians levied taxes on their own citizens and foreigners, and so did the Hebrews. So why do we pay taxes? We pay taxes because that is the price we pay to have a civilized society. A civilized society requires a well-funded government to provide essential community and public services including police and fire, parks, libraries, clean water, roads, highways and public transportation, to name a few. Taxes can be classified into two categories, regressive and progressive. If taxes negatively affect the poor they are considered regressive; The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro) continues to extend light rail lines if they negatively affect the rich more than they throughout the county from the San Fernando Valley to the East San Gabriel Valley to Santa Monica negatively affect the poor they are considered and Long Beach. -
