Dirk Gabriels 1. Geschiedenis van deze viool Deze viool is een Guarnerikopie, gebouwd door Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume in Parijs tussen 1842 en 1844 en draagt het nummer 1544. De eerste eigenaar was dhr. Jean B.Van den Broecke (°Gent 4/4/1850), leerling van Henri Vieuxtemps. Hij be- haalde aan het Conservatorium van Brussel een Eerste Prijs Viool in de klas van Henri Wieniawsky. Vanaf 1870 tot na de oorlog van 1914-18 werd hij samen met Peter Benoit leraar aan de Muziekschool van Antwerpen, die later het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Antwerpen werd. Dhr. Van den Broecke bespeelde het instrument als solist gedurende 30 jaar in de Opera van Antwerpen. Bij het overlijden van dhr. Van den Broecke op 4 september 1928, werd de viool eigendom van zijn zoon, die het instrument op zijn beurt op 3 december 1942 doorgaf aan Cyriel-Jozef Van Mieghem. Cyriel-Jozef gaf de Vuillaume aan zijn zoon, Michael Van Mieghem, die het instrument bespeelde in de Konin- klijke Vlaamse Opera van Antwerpen tot aan zijn pensioen op 27 januari 1985. Michael Van Mieghem overleed op 21 juli 2002, waardoor zijn zoon Bruno het instrument erfde. Sinds juli 2007 wordt de Vuillaume bespeeld door Dirk Gabriels. 2. Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (7 oktober 1798 - 19 maart 1875) werd geboren in een Mirecourtfamilie: vader en grootvader waren reeds vioolbouwers. Jean- Baptiste arriveerde in 1818 in Parijs om in het atelier van François Chanot te gaan werken.
