Noahidism Or B'nai Noah—Sons of Noah—Refers To, Arguably, a Family
Noahidism or B’nai Noah—sons of Noah—refers to, arguably, a family of watered–down versions of Orthodox Judaism. A majority of Orthodox Jews, and most members of the broad spectrum of Jewish movements overall, do not proselytize or, borrowing Christian terminology, “evangelize” or “witness.” In the U.S., an even larger number of Jews, as with this writer’s own family of orientation or origin, never affiliated with any Jewish movement. Noahidism may have given some groups of Orthodox Jews a method, arguably an excuse, to bypass the custom of nonconversion. Those Orthodox Jews are, in any event, simply breaking with convention, not with a scriptural ordinance. Although Noahidism is based ,MP3], Tạləmūḏ]תַּלְמּוד ,upon the Talmud (Hebrew “instruction”), not the Bible, the text itself does not explicitly call for a Noahidism per se. Numerous commandments supposedly mandated for the sons of Noah or heathen are considered within the context of a rabbinical conversation. Two only partially overlapping enumerations of seven “precepts” are provided. Furthermore, additional precepts, not incorporated into either list, are mentioned. The frequently referenced “seven laws of the sons of Noah” are, therefore, misleading and, indeed, arithmetically incorrect. By my count, precisely a dozen are specified. Although I, honestly, fail to understand why individuals would self–identify with a faith which labels them as “heathen,” that is their business, not mine. The translations will follow a series of quotations pertinent to this monotheistic and ,MP3], tạləmūḏiy]תַּלְמּודִ י ,talmudic (Hebrew “instructive”) new religious movement (NRM). His father was Rabbi Yisrael Noach, son of the Tzemach Tkedek ; his mother, Rebbetzin Freida, daughter of Rebbetzin Baila, who was the daughter of the Mitteler Rebbe. In the year 5635 (1875), he married Rebbetzin Yocheved, daughter of Rabbi Yehoshua Fallilc Sheinberg, one of the leading chasidim in the city of Kishinev. After his marriage, he made his home in !Kishinev and dedicat ed himself to the study of Torah and the service of G-d. Rabbi Avraham was well-known for his righteousness, his piety and his exceptional humility. When his father passed away, his chasidim were most anxious for Rabbi Avraham to take his place, but he declined to do so and remained in Kishinev. In order to support himself he went into business, even then devoting the rest of his life to the study of Torah and the service of G-d. He was interred in Kishinev. Shortly after, in 1956, I came to New York Ito learn at Yeshiva Torah Vodaas School. At that time, it was one of the biggest yeshivas in the world, and certainly the biggest yeshiva in North America with over two thousand students from grade one up until the highest level of Bais Midrash . It was situated in Williamsburg, Brooklyn — which was a big change from Montreal, let me tell you. I stayed at Torah Vodaas for two years and then I moved to the Lubavitch Yeshiva. But while I was still at Torah Vodaas, I heard the following story about the Frierdiker Rebbe , the Previous Rebbe of Lubavitch, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn. www.jcpa.org No. 3 15 December 2005 / 14 Cheshvan 5766 The Chabad Lubavitch Movement: Filling the Jewish Vacuum Worldwide An Interview with Samuel Heilman The influence of the Chabad Lubavitch movement in the Jewish world has greatly increased over the past decades. The seventh Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson (1902-1994), who died without a successor - and is considered by part of the Chabad Hasidim as the Messiah - was in the 1950s at the origins of the present international outreach campaign. The willingness of a substantial number of Chabad Hasidim to travel and live in places with few or no other Orthodox Jews has been a decisive factor in the movement's success. Chabad has brought Hasidism and Orthodox Jewish practice into the public square and also into the mainstream consciousness of world Jewry. Chabad zeroes in on crucial areas in the life cycle, including childcare centers, nursery schools, and college campuses, as well as public practice of Judaism, particularly Chanukah candle-lighting but also Sabbath candle-lighting for women and the donning of tefillin (phylacteries) by adult men. Chabad's messianic approach has come under severe criticism. Yet as more established groups of Orthodoxy feel insecure and do not have adherents willing to dedicate their lives to missionary activity, they are reluctant to alienate Chabad on which they may depend in certain locations and situations. An Increasing Influence The influence of the Chabad Lubavitch movement in the Jewish world has greatly increased over the past decades. Samuel Heilman, Harold Proshansky Chair in Jewish Studies at the Graduate Center and Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Queens College of the City University of New York, says that the willingness of a substantial number of Chabad Hasidim to travel and live in places with few or no other Orthodox Jews has been the decisive factor in the movement's success. -

57 Attitudes toward the Study of Zohar and Lurianic Kabbalah, from the Dawn of Chasidism to Present Day Chabad By: CHAIM MILLER In the contemporary Chabad community, study of the primary texts of Kabbalah is not emphasized. Chabad Chasidic thought (Chasidus) is studied extensively, as are the sermons (sichos) of the Lubavitcher Reb- bes, texts that themselves are rich in citations from, and commentary on, Kabbalistic sources. However, for reasons I will explore in this essay, Kabbalah study from primary texts, such as the Zohar and works of Rabbi Yitzchak Luria (Arizal), is relatively uncommon in Chabad. This has been noted by the Seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe himself: “Generally speaking, Kabbalah study was not common, even among Chabad Chasidim.”1 Is this omission intentional, a matter of principle? Or is Kabbalah study deemed worthwhile by Chabad, but neglected merely due to the priority of other activities? 1 Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, Toras Menachem, Hisvaduyos 5745 (Vaad Hanachos Lahak, 1985) volume 2, p. 1147. The Rebbe stressed that “Kabbalah study was not common, even among Chabad Chasidim” since, of the various strands of Chasidic thought, Chabad Chasidus is particularly rich in its use of Kabbalistic sources (see below section “Lurianic Kabbalah in Early Chabad”). One might therefore expect that Chabad Chasidim in particular might be in- clined to Kabbalah study. Rabbi Chaim Miller was educated at the Haberdashers’ Aske’s School in London, England and studied Medical Science at Leeds University. At the age of twenty-one, he began to explore his Jewish roots in full-time Torah study. Less than a decade later, he published the best-selling Kol Menachem Chumash, Gutnick Edition, which made over a thousand discourses of the late Lubavitcher Rebbe easily accessible to the layman. -
