    Lords of the land, lords sea Lords of the land, lords of the sea 1600-1800 and adaptation in early colonial Timor, Conflict Conflict and adaptation in early colonial Timor, 1600-1800 European traders and soldiers established a foothold on Timor in the course of the seventeenth century, motivated by the quest for the commercially vital sandalwood and the intense competition between the Dutch and the Portuguese. Lords of the land, lords of the sea focuses on two centuries of contacts between the indigenous polities on Timor and the early colonials, and covers the period 1600-1800. In contrast with most previous studies, the book treats Timor as a historical region in its own right, using a wide array of Dutch, Portuguese and other original sources, which are compared with the comprehensive corpus of oral tradition recorded on the island. From this rich material, a lively picture emerges of life and death in early Timorese society, the forms of trade, slavery, warfare, alliances, social life. The investigation demonstrates that the European groups, although having a role as ordering political forces, were only part of the political landscape of Timor. They relied on alliances where the distinction between ally and vassal was moot, and led to frequent conflicts and uprisings. During a slow and complicated process, the often turbulent political conditions involving Europeans, Eurasians, and Hans Hägerdal Timorese polities, paved the way for the later division of Timor into two spheres of roughly equal size. Hans Hägerdal (1960) is a Senior Lecturer in History at the Linnaeus University, Sweden. He has written extensively on East and Southeast Asian history.

    Pieter van Hoorn Pieter Janse van Hoorn (1619 - 1682-01-17) was een Raad van Indië en gaf in 1667-1668, slechts twee jaar na zijn aankomst in de Oost, leiding aan het tweede gezantschap dat de VOC ooit naar het Chinese keizerlijk hof stuurde, in de hoop handelsrechten in China te verkrijgen. Hij verkocht op 16 april 1663 zijn land en kruittoren aan de stad.[1] Vijf dagen later vertrok het hele gezin, waaronder een tweeling, naar Batavia. Aan boord van het schip Alphen kwam hij zeven maanden later aan.[2] Ambassadeur naar het Chinese Hof Het gezantschap waaraan Pieter van Hoorn leiding gaf moest handelsrechten verkrijgen van de Chinese keizer. Onder de Ming-dynastie hadden de Nederlanders niet direct op China mogen handelen, maar sinds de Ming-dynastie was gevallen en de Qing aan de macht waren zagen ze een kans hier verandering in te brengen. Tussen 1655 en 1686 werden er daarom - tijdens de regeerperioden van Shunzhi (1644-1661) en Kangxi (1661-1722) - in totaal zes gezantschappen naar het Chinese hof gestuurd. Pieter van Hoorn werd begin juli 1666 op reis gestuurd samen met de koopman Constantijn Nobel, een secretaris, zes lijfwachten, twee trompetters, een kok, een chirurg met twee assistenten, een tekenaar en zijn zoon Joan. De lading aan boord bevatte onder andere sandelhout, peper en voor 100.000 gulden aan geschenken, met een gecombineerde waarde van ongeveer een half miljoen gulden.[3] Het duurde vanwege de uitgebreide bureaucratische procedures van de Chinezen echter tot januari 1667 voordat het gezelschap de reis kon aanvaarden.

While choosing perceptible demonstration material for a lecture in Berlin in March 2012, Edwin Wieringa of the University of Cologne, assisted by Thoralf Hanstein of the Berlin State Library, made a remarkable discovery in that library’s collection: a rolled 52´73.5 cm poster with four text columns— ca. 23, 16.7, 16.4 and 15.4 cm wide—in Dutch, Malay, Javanese, and Chinese respectively.
