    Historiographical Approaches to Past Archaeological Research Gisela Eberhardt Fabian Link (eds.) BERLIN STUDIES OF THE ANCIENT WORLD has become increasingly diverse in recent years due to developments in the historiography of the sciences and the human- ities. A move away from hagiography and presentations of scientifi c processes as an inevitable progression has been requested in this context. Historians of archae- olo gy have begun to utilize approved and new histo- rio graphical concepts to trace how archaeological knowledge has been acquired as well as to refl ect on the historical conditions and contexts in which knowledge has been generated. This volume seeks to contribute to this trend. By linking theories and models with case studies from the nineteenth and twentieth century, the authors illuminate implications of communication on archaeological knowledge and scrutinize routines of early archaeological practices.   • Hermann Burmeister (1807–1891)
    CHAPTER FOUR HERMANN BURMEISTER (1807–1891) Karl Hermann Konrad Burmeister was born in 1807 in the Prussian Baltic port of Stralsund, until 1815 a Swedish possession.1 In 1827 he began his studies in Halle, under the direction of celebrated physician and botanist Kurt Sprengel (1766–1833). He was awarded his M.D. in 1829 with a the- sis on insect taxonomy. Shortly thereafter, he gained his Ph.D., present- ing an overview of fijish anatomy. The following year he moved to Berlin, taking up a post as surgeon to the Kaiser Franz Grenadier Regiment. He apparently hoped, ultimately, to serve as a military surgeon in the tropics, perhaps in the Dutch East Indies. When this ambition was thwarted, he abandoned medical practice in favor of natural history, remaining in Ber- lin, in close proximity to his friend Alexander von Humboldt. He lectured in Berlin Gymnasien [preparatory schools] then at the University, from 1831 to 1837, when he returned to the University of Halle-Wittenberg, fijirst as Lecturer, then Professor of Zoology. His charge included the Univer- sity’s museum, whose collections expanded greatly under his direction. 1843 saw the fijirst publication of his great Geschichte der Schöpfung [His- tory of Creation], destined to go through several editions in both Ger- man and French. In scope and spirit, the fijirst edition of this work is in many respects a precursor to Humboldt’s Cosmos. The French translation (1870) of the eighth edition of 1867 would contribute greatly to Burmeis- ter’s reputation in Argentina, since at the time few intellectuals could read German, but most knew French.

Beyond presenting potential solutions to the cuestión del indio, concepts such as prehistory, degeneration, evolution, and miscegenation enabled positive representations of the criollo that directly addressed criticisms emanating from both within and outside of the region. Thus, ethnography and anthropology were fundamental to the forging of national, group, and individual identities. The authors studied in the first three chapters are canonical, forgotten, and best-sellers in turn, including Lucio V. Mansilla, Juan Zorrilla de San Martín, Eduardo L. Holmberg, Francisco “Perito” Moreno, Vicente Fidel López, and Clemente Onelli. Although their focuses were distinct, as a whole these texts work to laud the Creole as fit, fertile, and White, while erasing the Indian from the nation due to their alleged innate, or racial, inferiority. The fourth and final chapter is devoted to contemporary romance novels by Florencia Bonelli and Gloria Casañas that aim to subvert and/or repurpose the concepts and ideologies analyzed in the first three chapters.

The South American Mammal collection at the Museo Geologico Giovanni Capellini (Bologna, Italy) Colligo, 3(3). https://perma.cc/UF7Y-ZFWQ Summary: Near the end of the 19th century, Professor Giovanni Capellini KEY-WORDS acquired a rich collection of fossil mammal remains from South America, Giovanni Capellini which became part of the permanent exhibit in the Museum that bears his Florentino Ameghino name. We investigate the private correspondence of G. Capellini, in order Hermann Burmeister to collect historical data on the collection. This correspondence includes a 19th century letter from Florentino Ameghino, which proves that he was born in Mo- historical collection neglia (Genova), Italy. Combining results from the letters found and the Paleontology revision of the taxonomy of the specimens, we conclude that most of the correspondence collection was probably sent from Argentina by the German zoologist Carl Hermann Conrad Burmeister between 1863 and 1866.

Leptodactylus mystacinus: Boulenger 1882:244. First use of currently recognized name. • CONTENT. The species is monotypic (see Nomendatural History). • DEFINITION. Adult Leptodactylus mystacinus are of mod- erate size, the head is as wide as long, and the hind limbs are moderately short (see Table; Heyer and Thompson 2000 pro- vided definitions of adult size and leg length categories for Leptodactylus). Male vocal sacs are not visible externally or at best are weakly expanded laterally and shghtly darker than fe- male throats. Male snouts ai'e more spatulate than those of fe- males. Male forearms are not hypertrophied. Males lack asperi- ties on the thumbs and chest. One or two pairs of dorsolateral folds (indicated by dark/light outlining in indifferently preserved MAP.     Rev33-01 16/3/09 14:19 Página 89 Sandra Carreras* ➲ Una carrera científica entre Prusia y Argentina: el itinerario de Hermann Burmeister En 1861 Hermann Burmeister, quien por entonces tenía 55 años de edad y ya había desarrollado una importante carrera científica en su país, renunció a su cargo de catedrá- tico de Zoología de la Universidad de Halle para hacerse cargo de la dirección del Museo Público de Buenos Aires, posición en la que permaneció hasta su muerte, ocurrida en 1892. A su funeral, que fue costeado por el Estado, asistieron el presidente de la nación, Carlos Pellegrini, varios miembros de su gabinete y representantes de las principales ins- tituciones científicas del país. Pocos años después se aprobó una ley que ordenaba la construcción de un monumento en su honor, el cual fue inaugurado en 1900. Semejantes honores dedicados a un científico extranjero no eran habituales en la vida pública de la Argentina de aquellos años. ¿Cómo se explica entonces que Burmeis- ter recibiera tanto reconocimiento? Un primer indicio para responder esta pregunta puede hallarse en las reflexiones que Ángel Gallardo, uno de los sucesores de Burmeister en la dirección del museo, expuso en 1916 en el prólogo de la traducción al castellano de una de las obras de éste: La muerte sella y consagra la nacionalidad adoptiva y en cierto modo se muere por la nueva patria, en la cual se ha formado un hogar y a la que pertenecen los hijos y la obra. Los últimos treinta años de la fecunda vida del doctor Burmeister pueden considerarse pues los de un sabio argentino (Gallardo 1916: 10).

    ABSTRACT W. H . HUDSON BETWEEN ART AND SCIENCE by Joshua Imhoff William Henry Hudson is known best as the author of romances set in South America, essays praising the English countryside, and as a devoted bird preservationist. Yet few realize that Hudson spent the first ten years of his adulthood as a bird collector and amateur scientist in the wilds of his homeland, Argentina. Using a biographical approach, this thesis focuses on Hudson’s early career as a naturalist. It will examine his role within the scientific community to contextualize the increased professionalization of science during the mid-nineteenth century, concentrating on the tension between observation- based naturalists and society-based professional scientists. The letter claimed that Charles Darwin, the most eminent naturalist of the age, misrepresented the habits of an Argentine woodpecker in his work The Origin of Species. Darwin wrote that the woodpecker never visited trees and had adapted to life on the treeless Pampas of Argentina.
