The Mobocratic City: Race, Space and Citizenship in Nineteenth Century Philadelphia Abstract This dissertation focuses on publics and the public sphere to argue that communication theory should investigate connections across discourse, space, and practice in the creation and maintenance of publics. I chose antebellum Philadelphia as my test case for two reasons. First, theorists such as Jurgen Habermas have identified the antebellum period as the time when the public sphere ceased to be maintained through face-to-face relations and became connected by means of the news media. Second, tremendous social and political conflict also characterized this period when categories considered by communications theory to be discursively constructed, such as "race" and "nation," were contested and revised. The majority of archival evidence tells a different story, one in which spatial relations and material conditions defined the public, and the act of being in public was a contested mode of political communication. Antebellum Philadelphians attempted to define, shape, and communicate public opinion through the development of the material city and the spatial practices of its inhabitants. -

Guide to the Joe Jefferson Players Scrapbooks Descriptive Summary: Creator: Jeanette Maygarden Title: Joe Jefferson Players Scrapbooks Dates: 1947-2006 Quantity: 9.7 linear feet Abstract: A collection of scrapbooks containing material related to the theatrical performances of the Joe Jefferson Players. Accession: 00-08-365 ; 365-2000 Biographical Note: In 1947 a small group of Mobilians, intent on restoring the city's waning theatre activity after the depression and war years, initiated the Joe Jefferson Players. Successful in their efforts, the Players were in possession of their own permanent playhouse by 1949 and by 1961 membership totaled over 1000. By 1967 the membership limit was raised to 2000, and continued popularity demanded the expansion of an already once-rebuilt playhouse in the same year. Despite the challenges of subsequent years: hurricanes, financial difficulties, and increasing competition from other sources of local live entertainment, the Joe Jefferson Players remain active to this day, having finished their fifty-ninth season at the time this guide was written. The Joe Jefferson Players took their name from prominent nineteenth-century actor Joseph Jefferson III (1829-1905), a man born into a family of notable actors and theatre workers. Starting at the age of four, Joe devoted the next seventy-two years of his life to the theatre, traveling around the world from London to New Zealand and performing a variety of roles, the most notable of which is undoubtedly his portrayal of "Rip Van Winkle." In 1893 he succeeded Edwin Booth as president of the Players Club, a national organization, making him the acknowledged head of American actors. -

"Those That Play Your Clowns:" Comic Actors and Comic Acting on the 19th Century American Stage Barnard Hewitt (Barnard Hewitt's Fellows Address was delivered at the ATA Convention in Chicago, August 16, 1977.) It seems to me that critics and historians of theatre have neglected comedians and the acting of comedy, and I ask myself why should this be so? Nearly everyone enjoys the acting of comedy. As the box office has regularly demonstrated, more people enjoy comedy than enjoy serious drama. I suspect that comedy and comedians are neglected because critics and scholars feel, no doubt unconsciously that because they arouse laughter rather than pity and fear, they don't deserve serious study. Whatever the reason for this neglect, it seems to me unjust. In choosing the subject for this paper, I thought I might do something to redress that injustice. I hoped to identify early styles of comic acting on our stage, discover their origins in England, note mutations caused by their new environment, and take note of their evolution into new styles. I don't need to tell you how difficult it is to reconstruct with confidence the acting style of any period before acting was recorded on film. One must depend on what can be learned about representative individuals: about the individual's background, early training and experience, principal roles, what he said about acting and about his roles, pictures of him in character, and reports by his contemporaries - critics and ordinary theatregoers - of what he did and how he spoke. First-hand descriptions of an actor's performance in one or more roles are far and away the most enlightening evidence, but nothing approaching Charles Clarke's detailed description of Edwin Booth's Hamlet is available for an American comic actor.1 Comedians have written little about their art.2 What evidence I found is scattered and ambiguous when it is not contradictory. -

THE WILLIAM WAY COMMUNITY CENTER: 1996– INTRODUCTION This brief history of the building at 1315 Spruce Street that is now home to the William Way Community Center grew out of a presentation that was given at the Building Bash at the Center on June 5, 2010. The response to that slideshow and lecture was so overwhelmingly positive, and there were so many requests to put the information into a book, that this is the result. Since the construction of this block of Spruce Street ove 160 years ago, this building has housed many prominent private Philadelphia citizens, the prestigious Engineers’ Club and the the city’s GLBT Community Center. The people whose lives and spirits resonated in this building, and the events that occured here connect the site inextricably with the broader, complex and vibrant history of Philadelphia. Their stories help make the Center a part of what makes Center City the great place it is today for both straight and GLBT people to live and work in and to visit. The information and the photos here came from many historical sources, among them : – The amazing collection at the John J. Wilcox Jr. GLBT Archives here at the Center – Historic issues of The Philadelphia Inquirer at the Free Library – The Engineers’ Club papers and journals at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania – City Directories and Atlases – Boyd’s Philadelphia Blue Books, 1880-1920 – Ray Fuller’s Through the Years, a history of the Engineers’ Club published in 1970 I sincerely hope those of you who take the time to look through the history, stories and photos presented here enjoy reading and seeing them as much as I enjoyed researching them. -

By Lee L. Schreiber TEMPLE UNIVERSITY BLUEBLOODS AND LOCAL SOCIETIES: A PHILADELPHIA MICROCOSM ALTHOUGH several scholars including Neil Harris, Oliver Larkin, A Russell Lynes, Lillian G. Miller and Russell B. Nye have studied the relationships of artists and art patrons to such diverse subjects as politics, tastemaking, commercialism, and patriotism, little attention has been given to the patron's social position within the local community or the degree of involvement in local organiza- tions.' A study which explores the ties of the layman art patron to such organizations helps identify 19th century American art patrons by more than name and aids in understanding motivation. Beginning in the early decades of the 19th century and continuing at least to the Civil War many Americans organized and joined a multitude of societies. Although many historians have argued that these organizations embraced citizens of all classes,' more recent studies show that, in the main, it was the rich and eminent who founded and guided these societies and often made up the bulk of the membership. : The Philadelphia elite were typical of the national urban elite. In turn, the leaders of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts were typical of Philadelphia elite' and, like their contemporaries in 1.
