SCHWEIZER Honolulu 1993 Translator’s Introduction The publication of Nakanaela's book coincided with a brief period of optimism for those who believed that Hawaiians should control their own affairs. Represented by the National Reform Party, Hawaiians running on a platform for native-rights had just succeeded in achieving an effective majority in the Hawaiian legislature and moreover had managed to turn out a domineering cabinet set in place by the 1887 “Bayonet Constitution.” For years this cabinet led by Lorrin Thurston had whittled away at the prestige and authority of the Hawaiian monarchy. Wilcox had his detractors, then as now, but few would argue that much of the credit for the achievements of the National Reform Party belongs to Wilcox. In 1890 he was the man of the moment. A complex mix of American, Hawaiian and Italian cultural values found expression in Wilcox's life. His father, William S. Wilcox, was a New Englander, a descendant of a patrician family from Tiverton, Devonshire, England, “British offsprings of the Teutonic race mixed with the ancient Roman blood from the time of Caesar,” according to the Wilcox genealogy.1 Two of the Tiverton clan immigrated to New England but later the elder, Daniel Wilcox, returned to England. The younger immigrant settled in Connecticut and his descendants spread through Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York. The Wilcox clan of Kauaʻi founded by eighth missionary company member Abner Wilcox descended from the Connecticut branch of Wilcoxes. -

Commemorating the Hawaiian Mission Bicentennial
Hawaiian Mission Bicentennial Commemorating the Hawaiian Mission Bicentennial The Second Great Awakening was a Protestant religious revival during the early 19th-century in the United States. During this time, several missionary societies were formed. The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) was organized under Calvinist ecumenical auspices at Bradford, Massachusetts, on the June 29, 1810. The first of the missions of the ABCFM were to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and India, as well as to the Cherokee and Choctaw of the southeast US. In October 1816, the ABCFM established the Foreign Mission School in Cornwall, CT, for the instruction of native youth to become missionaries, physicians, surgeons, schoolmasters or interpreters. By 1817, a dozen students, six of them Hawaiians, were training at the Foreign Mission School to become missionaries to teach the Christian faith to people around the world. One of those was ʻŌpūkahaʻia, a young Hawaiian who came to the US in 1809, who was being groomed to be a key figure in a mission to Hawai‘i. ʻŌpūkahaʻia yearned “with great earnestness that he would (return to Hawaiʻi) and preach the Gospel to his poor countrymen.” Unfortunately, ʻŌpūkahaʻia died unexpectedly at Cornwall on February 17, 1818. The life and memoirs of ʻŌpūkahaʻia inspired other missionaries to volunteer to carry his message to the Hawaiian Islands. On October 23, 1819, the Pioneer Company of ABCFM missionaries from the northeast US, set sail on the Thaddeus for the Hawaiian Islands. They first sighted the Islands and arrived at Kawaihae on March 30, 1820, and finally anchored at Kailua-Kona, April 4, 1820. -

Lanikaula Street Hilo, HI 96720 June 2010 Bus Stop Location Project for County of Hawaii Mass Transit Agency Inventory and Initial Screening Report Introduction County of Hawaii Mass Transit Agency Bus Stop Location Project Inventory and Initial Screening Report I. Introduction The County of Hawaii Mass Transit Agency (MTA) currently operates on a flagstop basis. With increased usage and traffic, MTA is moving into a designated bus stop program. SSFM International, Inc. (SSFM) was contracted to identify locations for bus stops islandwide and to determine if locations warrant an official bus stop listed in the Hawaii County Code. Official bus stops will need to be Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant. This Inventory and Initial Screening Report constitutes the deliverable for Task One of the work program for this study. Based on field work conducted and meetings held with bus drivers, SSFM developed a complete inventory of bus stops islandwide. The inventory, consisting of approximately 575 stops, was then divided into priority and non-priority stops for the remainder of the work tasks in this study. Priority stops, totaling approximately 100 stops, were recommended based on surrounding land use, frequency, and local knowledge. The list of priority stops is shown in (Appendix 1). These stops handle the bulk of the ridership and are in close vicinity to schools, resorts, medical facilities, and urban centers. -

RICHARD HENRY AND ANNA SCOTT SLOGGETT JOHN WILLIAM AND ALICE SCOTT ANDERSON THE WATUMULL FOUNDATION ORAL HISTORY PROJECT Richard Henry Sloggett (1904 - ) John William Anderson (1912 - ) This is a twofold interview with Richard Hen ry and Anna Scott Sloggett and John William and Alice Scott Anderson, all prominent kamaainas. The two men have been associated, respective ly, with ranching and the sugar industry in Hawaii during their entire adult lives. The two women, descendents of the Rice family on their mother's side, are sisters. Richard Sloggett is a descendent, on his mother's side, of Abner and Lucy (Hart) Wilcox, missionary teachers who arrived with the Eighth Company in 1837· Interestingly enough, his uncle, Ralph Lyman Wilcox, married his wife's aunt, Anna Charlotte Rice. The interview consists of personal histories and anecdotes of experiences on Kauai. It is sug gested that it be read in conjunction with the in terview of Edith Rice Flews, who relates the his tory of the Rice family. Mrs. J, A. Mission Stations
Mission Stations The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), based in Boston, was founded in 1810, the first organized missionary society in the US. One hundred years later, the Board was responsible for 102-mission stations and a missionary staff of 600 in India, Ceylon, West Central Africa (Angola), South Africa and Rhodesia, Turkey, China, Japan, Micronesia, Hawaiʻi, the Philippines, North American native American tribes, and the "Papal lands" of Mexico, Spain and Austria. On October 23, 1819, the Pioneer Company of ABCFM missionaries set sail on the Thaddeus to establish the Sandwich Islands Mission (now known as Hawai‘i). Over the course of a little over 40-years (1820- 1863 - the “Missionary Period”), about 180-men and women in twelve Companies served in Hawaiʻi to carry out the mission of the ABCFM in the Hawaiian Islands. One of the earliest efforts of the missionaries, who arrived in 1820, was the identification and selection of important communities (generally near ports and aliʻi residences) as “Stations” for the regional church and school centers across the Hawaiian Islands. As an example, in June 1823, William Ellis joined American Missionaries Asa Thurston, Artemas Bishop and Joseph Goodrich on a tour of the island of Hawaiʻi to investigate suitable sites for mission stations. On O‘ahu, locations at Honolulu (Kawaiahaʻo), Kāne’ohe, Waialua, Waiʻanae and ‘Ewa served as the bases for outreach work on the island. By 1850, eighteen mission stations had been established; six on Hawaiʻi, four on Maui, four on Oʻahu, three on Kauai and one on Molokai. Meeting houses were constructed at the stations, as well as throughout the district. -

P. 2 1 Digit zed by Google \ PREFACE AT the request of the Board of Education, I have .fi. endeavored to write a simple and concise history of the Hawaiian people, which, it is hoped, may be useful to the teachers and higher classes in our schools. As there is, however, no book in existence that covers the whole ground, and as the earlier histories are entirely out of print, it has been deemed best to prepare not merely a school-book, but a history for the benefit of the general public. This book has been written in the intervals of a labo rious occupation, from the stand-point of a patriotic Hawaiian, for the young people of this country rather than for foreign readers. This fact will account for its local coloring, and for the prominence given to certain topics of local interest. Especial pains have been taken to supply the want of a correct account of the ancient civil polity and religion of the Hawaiian race. This history is not merely a compilation. It is based upon a careful study of the original authorities, the writer having had the use of the principal existing collections of Hawaiian manuscripts, and having examined the early archives of the government, as well as nearly all the existing materials in print. -

When I was looking into getting a graduate degree, Kanalu was the graduate student advisor. He remembered me from my undergrad years, which at that point had been nine years earlier. He was open, inviting, and supportive of any idea I tossed at him. We had several more conversations after I joined the program, and every single one left me dizzy. I felt like I had just raced through two dozen different ideas streams in the span of ten minutes, and hoped that at some point I would recognize how many things I had just learned. I told him my thesis idea, and he went above and beyond to help. He also agreed to chair my committee. I was orignally going to write about Pana Oʻahu, the stories behind places on Oʻahu. Kanalu got the Pana Oʻahu (HWST 362) class put back on the schedule for the first time in a few years, and agreed to teach it with me as his assistant. The next summer, we started mapping out a whole new course stream of classes focusing on Pana Oʻahu. But that was his last summer. -

K. Oldroyd English Department Bachelor of Arts This thesis offers an exploration of the Hawaiian Iconoclasm of 1819 through the lens of an historical fiction novella. The thesis consists of two parts: a critical introduction outlining the theoretical background and writing process and the novella itself. 1819 was a year of incredible change on Hawaiian Islands. Kamehameha, the Great Uniter and first monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, had recently died, thousands of the indigenous population were dying, and foreign powers were arriving with increasing frequency, bringing with them change that could not be undone.
