  • Roy Stover Series by Philip Bartlett
1 The complex and well-told mysteries of The Roy Stover Series by Philip Bartlett A review by David M. Baumann September 22-October 31, 2018 3,928 words series book friend has the admirable habit of giving me some of his extras now and then. He enjoys sharing some of the books he likes or introducing me to a series I hadn’t heard A about before. Two or three years ago he gave me a copy of a book published in 1929 called The Lakeport Bank Mystery. It sat on my shelf unread, waiting for an opportune time. A couple of years later he sent me the second book in the series, also published in 1929. It’s called The Mystery of the Snowbound Express. I set it alongside the first book, and for a few months their once-bright, now slightly faded orange spines attracted my glance as they rested at eye level in a bookcase I pass often. Finally, I took the first volume down to read it. Within a couple of chapters I knew that I had been launched into a topnotch story very well told. Like an ingot of Swiss chocolate among a sampling of Hershey bars, it stood out from the crowd of what was commonly and acceptably enjoyable, and opened my eyes with the unanticipated pleasure of recognizing high quality distinctiveness. “If the other books in this series are as good as this one,” I said to myself with an air of self-appointed connoisseurship, “then I owe my friend an unpayable debt of gratitude for introducing me to a set of stories of singular excellence.” Or words to that effect.

Frank and Joe help prevent year-old cyclist Ken Blake from getting killed in an accident. As they help the boy up they see he is delivering an envelope to Victor Peters, a name that means something to the Hardys later on in the book. The Hardys learn that their friend Chet The Secret of the Old Mill has been tricked when asked to make change for what turned out to be a counterfeit twenty dollar bill, something that the police later confirm is becoming more common in their town of Bayport. Later, Joe is awakened by a clattering sound and sees a mysterious figure bicycling away from the Hardys' home. While investigating the disturbance a note is found that reads, "Drop case or else danger for you and your family. The Hardys go with Chet, who wants to apply for a job at Elekton Controls, a missile-development company, but are told by Mr. Markel, one of Elekton's security guards, that there are no openings. Before leaving, they notice a bike that looks similar to the one ridden by Ken Blake and The Secret of the Old Mill is likely to have been The Secret of the Old Mill by the person who left the threatening note.

  • A Last Talk with Leslie Mcfarlane
A Last Talk with Leslie McFarlane DA VID PALMER L eslie McFarlane, one of the world's most popular children's authors and a prolific contributor to Canadian popular culture, died on September 6th, 1977, in Whitby, Ontario. Born at Carleton Place, Ontario, in 1902, he worked as a reporter for several newspapers in Ontario and Massachusetts, and from the twenties to the forties contributed hundreds of stories and serials to the "better pulps" and "sn~ooth-paper magazines" (as Maclean's explained in 1940) in Canada, the U.S.A. and Great Britain. In this period he also published two novels, and under various pseudonyms wrote numerous children's adventure books for the Stratemeyer Syndicate of New Jersey (home of the Bobbsey Twins), including the first Hardy Boys books. In the late thirties and forties he wrote dozens of radio plays, and in 1944, after two years with the Department of Munitions and Supply, he was invited by John Grierson to join the National Film Board. During the next fourteen years he wrote, produced or directed (often all three) twenty- eight documentary fbs, winning several awards and an Oscar nomination. In 1958 he became head of the television drama script department at the CBC and wrote many television plays for that and other networks. He continued to produce occasional books (and revisions of earlier works) for children, and some of these later writings are reviewed elsewhere in this issue of CCL. Ironically, in view of this enormous output, McFarlane is probably best known now as the original Franklin W.
