In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. © Copyright 2018 Richard Jones iii ABSTRACT Glaciers within the Amundsen Sea Embayment (ASE) are rapidly retreating and so contributing 10% of current global sea level rise, primarily through basal melting. » Here the focus is atmospheric features that influence the mass balance of these glaciers and their representation in atmospheric models. New radiosondes and surface-based observations show that global reanalysis products contain relatively large biases in the vicinity of Pine Island Glacier (PIG), e.g. near-surface temperatures 1.8 ±C (ERA-I) to 6.8 ±C (MERRA) lower than observed. The reanalyses all underestimate wind speed during orographically-forced strong wind events and struggle to reproduce low-level jets. These biases would contribute to errors in surface heat fluxes and thus the simulated supply of ocean heat leading to PIG melting. Ten new ice cores show that there is no significant trend in accumulation on PIG between 1979 and 2013. RACMO2.3 and four global reanalysis products broadly reproduce the observed time series and the lack of any significant trend.

    Memoria Antártica Nacional Campaña Antártica 2014-2015 Santiago Diciembre de 2015 Presentación del Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores Sr. Heraldo Muñoz Valenzuela El 16 de diciembre de 2014, el Consejo de Política Antártica, que tengo el honor de presidir, reunido en Punta Arenas, entregó un mandato a las instituciones antárticas nacionales para la elaboración de una Memoria Antártica Nacional. El documento que presentamos, compilación inédita de las tareas que se desarrollan anualmente en ese continente, da cumplimiento a dicho mandato. El quehacer antártico nacional involucra a un amplio espectro de instituciones, las que destinan personas y recursos a la ejecución de las tareas que nuestra legislación les confiere. Cada una de estas entidades cumple un papel fundamental en el logro de los objetivos establecidos en la Política Antártica Nacional, documento rector de nuestros trabajos. El Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, en su rol de coordinador de la Política Antártica Nacional, ha enfatizado la difusión hacia la ciudadanía de la labor que las instituciones nacionales realizan en ese continente. Junto con describir de manera general las perspectivas que se abren para los intereses nacionales en este ámbito, este documento resalta los profundos vínculos históricos, geográficos y políticos que desde los inicios de nuestra historia patria nos unen con la Antártica. Al presentar esta primera Memoria Anual, es oportuno recordar el destacado papel de Chile durante las negociaciones del Tratado Antártico, instrumento internacional que cumplirá 55 años de vigencia en 2016, a través de sus delegados Marcial Mora, Enrique Gallardo y Julio Escudero; así como durante la evolución de las cuestiones antárticas en el ámbito multilateral, gracias a figuras como Oscar Pinochet de la Barra y Jorge Berguño.

There is real value in working together with shared vision, Cunderstanding that there is strength in num- bers, that leadership takes many forms and that no single person can think of everything. As Maine’s public research university with a President’s statewide mission, we’ve always been in the role of problem solving, helping discover what’s next and communicating evidence-based knowledge to meet needs. UMaine partnerships are forged among scholars and researchers in different disciplines, and with com- munity groups and organizations to benefit the people we serve. And throughout these efforts, students can gain real-world experience and be engaged in public service. Take the multiple UMaine research and outreach efforts to help the state address its growing human and animal health issues related to tick-borne illnesses. UMaine Cooperative Extension has long been on the front lines of tick identification. In the ongoing search for answers, UMaine faculty, staff and students are involved in research in varied fields, and in part- nership with agencies such as the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. And with the help of a 2014 bond approved by Maine voters, the state will soon have a new laboratory administered by UMaine Extension to improve the protection of our human health, food and natural resource-based econ- omy.

    Antarctic Specially Protected Area No. 149 (Site of Special Scientific Interest No. 32) Cape Shirreff, Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands 1. Geographical location. Cape Shirreff is a low, ice-free peninsula towards the western end of the north coast of Livingston Island, situated at latitude 62°27’S, longitude 60°47’W, between Barclay Bay and Hero Bay. Telmo Island is the largest of a small group of ice-free rock islets, approximately 2 km west of Cape Shirreff. 2. Management plan i. Description of site. The Site includes the entire area of the Cape Shirreff peninsula north of the glacier ice tongue margin, and most of the Telmo Island group (see map). ASPA 149 Map A* 253 ASPA 149 Map B* ASPA 149 Map C* ii. Reason for designation. The presence of both Antarctic fur seal and penguin breeding colonies, and of krill fisheries within the foraging range of these species, make this a critical site for inclusion in the ecosystem monitoring network being established to help meet the objectives of the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources.
