The Friendship News May 2012 8 Meet our June 17 Storytelling Guest

My father, Warren Teets, was born (in 1924) and raised in Friendsville. He and his father and mother (Harvey and Pearl Teets) and his nine siblings (Arthur, Stanley, Rose, Glen, Ivan, Or- val, Mildred, Junior, and Ken) lived on a farm just west of Friendsville on a road that is named

Teets Road. Although my family lived in Miami for most of my childhood, we visited Friends- ville often, and I have a great fondness for Garrett County. As you say, the books are works of fiction. However, for authenticity of setting I used the names of the streets of Friendsville, the river, some buildings on Maple Street, and other identifying landmarks within the stories. (I did take some license with placement of some of the .adventures.) I used the names of my uncles in the stories, particularly in the first book, Rufus Steele 1938. The narrator in the book (Henry Murphy) is a composite of many of their adventures and is the same age as my father was in 1938 (14 years old). My uncle, Stanley (Jim), was a trapper for most of his life. Hence, the beginning story of the setting of traps and the bear attack. Many of my uncles played Rufus Steele author baseball. Hence, the baseball scenes. And, every winter, the family dug out coal for the fur- nace. Hence, the scenes of searching for coal veins in the abandoned mine. And, on one of Susan Turner our family summer trips to Friendsville, my cousins Linda and Mary Teets took us to a tent re- vival in Swanton—very scary! Hence, the tent revival scene in this book.

Obviously, I am familiar with the founding of Friendsville and recognizable names in Garrett County history: Friend, Myers, Glover, Savage, Schroyer, Fox. These names, as you point out, are sprinkled throughout the book—although the events connected with them are purely fiction.

For historical events and places, my uncle Ken sent me a book of photographs published some years ago by the Garrett County Historical Society. These pictures provided ideas for scenes and places in the book. For example, the photo of Fred Fox’s horse barn which burned in the early 1900’s sparked the idea for the opening scene in Rufus Steele 1940—the barn burning with the horses trapped inside. My uncle Orval Teets and aunt Reb (Rhodes) Teets from Swanton were always very involved in Boy Scouts and their jamborees. Hence, the notion in the 1940 book of preparing for the tracking activities of boy scouts. In addition, on one of our summer visits to Garrett County, my brother Bill fell in my uncle Glen’s well and had to be pulled out. This scene in the 1940 book is taken from that memory.

The idea for the main character to be a doctor on Friendsville’s Maple Street came from my own experience of visiting a doctor in a brick house/office on Maple Street when I was a young teenager. Unfortunately, I do not remember his name, but he would have been Friendsville’s town doctor in the early to mid 1960’s. I must tell you that the name of the main character, Rufus Steele, is entirely fictional and has little to do with Friendsville. In the process of reading a morning paper, I came across the name Rufus and thought it perfect for this character’s first name. Then, because of his strong inner core and “steely” nerves in the face of crisis, the last name Steele seemed appropriate

The last book, Rufus Steele 1943, is a combination of sources and people and places. Many of the ideas came from my father’s own experiences as a member of the corps of engineers in Italy in World War II. Others came from books I read on field hospitals and battles in Italy dur- ing the war.

I’m always thrilled that people read the Rufus stories and enjoy them. They are a great joy to write and bring back wonderful memories of place.

Susan C. Turner, born in NY and raised in Miami, is the author of the acclaimed Rufus Steele adventure series. She is well known for her delightful picture books, including Ben- jamin Barley's Button which she wrote and illustrated. Turner is noted for her portrayal of the lives of young people, the challenges they face in growing up, and the decisions they

The Friendship News May 2012 9 Information from an old Friend Bible

The Bible once belonged to Milo James Friend and Rose M. (Schurr) Friend of DeKalb Co., Indiana, and was then hand- ed down to their son Carl Ervin Friend, Steven A. Friend's father.

There was a handwritten note in this Bible -- apparently penned by Norris W. Friend of DeKalb Co., Indiana, Milo's father and Steve's (and Robert E. Friend’s) great-grandfather.

The subject of this writing was Norris's departed wife, Susanna (Deter/Deeter) Friend. ***

Contents of the note are as follows, word-for-word from the original:

Susanna Friend daughter of Elizabeth and George Deeter *** was born in DeKalb County Indiana March 10, 1831. Was married to Norris Friend Aug 16 1874.

To this union was born four sons two daughters and three grandchildren. She united with the German Baptist Brethren in the Spring of 1876. Always remained a true follower trying to walk in his footsteps. Departed this life Jan 30 - 1906 at her home in DeKalb County aged 54 yr 10 mo - 20 ds.

Before parting she called the family to her bedside bidding them all goodbye telling them not to cry, but be happy that she could go.

In her death the community loses a good neighbor, the church a valued member and the family a loving wife and mother.

A precious one from us has gone A voice we loved is stilled A place is vacant in our home Which never can be filled.

Note that Pearl J. Friend's name was incorrectly spelled "Perl" in the above record.

(*) To the above record, Steven A. Friend added the dates of death for John Henry Friend and Alda Mae Friend as per their funeral pamphlets found in another Bible.

Note for the record that the birth year for Milo is incorrectly stated as "1877" in his funeral pamphlet.

(**) To the above record, Robert E. Friend added the date of death for his grandfather, Emery Milton Friend.

(***) Robert E. Friend regarding the name Deeter vs. Deter: The current (March 2012) consensus among us local re- searchers is that Susanna was born a Deter. Her husband, Norris W. Friend, was not the best of spellers (see Perl vs. Pearl, etc.), so this may be why Susanna’s headstone (at 16 Zion Lutheran Church cemetery, on State Rt. 327 between Corunna and Garrett, Indiana) shows her maiden name as Deeter; the other explanation is that Susanna decided to change the spelling to Deeter to make the pronunciation more clear, but I personally doubt this; her father, George, was

Lee Wayne Friend (1947 - ____) and his (and my) grandfather, Emery Milton Friend (1881 - 1965) in the sugar shack on Emery's farm. (Lee sent the pic to me in 2006.) The farm is located at 3462 Country Road 11, Corunna, Indiana; Emery's only remaining offspring, our Uncle Stanley, still lives there.

Grandpa Friend tapped maple trees and made syrup until he was too old to walk around the farm. He also had a me- chanical press and made apple cider.

Susannah Friend-House, Daughter of John Friend Sr. Books I and II

Patrick T. Smith and Patty (Friend) Thompson

Now available through the Friend Family Association of America

Susannah Friend was born about 1762 in the Northern Neck of Virginia near present day Paw Paw, WV. Susannah trav- eled as a child with her father, John Friend Sr. and his young family into the wilderness of Western Maryland, settling in what would become the Friendsville area. Susannah would grow and mature in this area, then meet and marry Andrew House. They would travel to Ohio and raise a family of eight children. Susannah Friend and her family would thrive in Ohio, immigrate to Illinois, then Iowa, and finally spread out all over the young country. This book attempts to re-build the lives of Susannah Friend, her husband and their descendants through US Census records, family bibles, land deeds, wills, photographs, personal histories, obituaries, newspaper articles, military records as well as birth, marriage and death records. Susannah and her family have been divided into two books, because of the enormous volume of infor- mation. Her first two children, John and Mary, will be featured in Book I (636 pages), while the remainder of her children, Charles, Susanne, Andrew, William, Sarah and Elizabeth, will comprise Book II (680 pages). Although the children are featured in one book, they will be briefly outlined in the corresponding book. The information on Susannah Friend and an outline of her lineage back to Nils Larson Friend (Frande) will be presented in both books. These reference books are fully indexed and presented in an outline format. The initial cost of printing the book has been donated to the FFAA. Pro- ceeds from the sales of these books printed by the FFAA will go to the FFAA (a non-profit organization). All book sales are tax deductible. Each book in the initial offering will be signed by the authors.

Black and white spiral bound copies can be purchased for $60 (plus $10 S&H) each or a CD at $30 (plus $5 S&H) of each book. The CD contains a color copy of the book in a PDF format (requiring Acrobat 7.0). Earlier versions of Acro- bat can open the text, but may not open all the images. The spiral bound set can be purchased for $100 (plus $10 S&H) or CD set for $50 (plus $5 S&H). Credit card purchases can be made by using Pay Pal at the FFAA web site. Orders paid by check (made payable to the Friend Family Association) should be sent to:
