A spectacular view of the Baltimore, Maryland, area (front cover) and a larger view of the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area (back cover) were taken by N A S A ’s Landsat-4 camera. Launched July 16, 1982, these “ aerial” views were taken in July and November of that year, respectively. In the Baltimore scene, urban area ap pears dark gray. Parks, cemeteries and hospital grounds within the confines of the urban area appear red, as does vegetation. The asphalt runways of Baltimore-Washing ton International Airport (BW I) appear dark (lower center). Major arterial transportation systems show up spectacularly. In this Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper view of the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area (back cover), the dark blue areas are the dense inner city areas where significant ground cover is minimal.
