Spiritual Reflection

Jesus proclaims to his disciples, which includes us: “You are the light of the world.” What does Jesus means when he speaks of us as “the light of the world?” If we try to answer this from a very human perspective we can get puffed up in thinking that WE are very impor- tant, very bright, and very much called to let people bask in our light. However if we listen to what Jesus is saying and what the scriptures tell us about what sort of actions makes our light shine, than a very different image appears. In the first scripture reading from Isaiah we hear it said: “If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday.” It is in reaching out to those is need that our light shines, because our light is not our own, but rather we are ultimately called to reflect the LIGHT, who is Christ. Christ himself says: “Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and give glory to your heavenly Father.” We are not being asked to shine so that others can praise us but rather our action, in reflecting God’s light, will lead others to give our God the praise and glory. CATHOLICISM IN LAWRENCEVILLE Jim Wudarczyk will offer a second presentation on Catholicism in Lawrenceville next Sunday, Feb. 16th, after the 9:30 a.m. Mass in the Lower Room of Our Lady of the Angels. The topic will be "Catholicism in the Golden Age of Lawrenceville, 1868-1940." During this period, both Saint Mary's and Saint Augustine wit- nessed phenomenal growth, which necessitated the need for larger churches. The area also saw the birth of four new Catholic parishes: Saint John the Baptist, Saint Kieran's, Saint Mary Assumption, and Holy Family. The talk will also address the evolution of the community from a struggling rural borough to a metropolitan area. There will also be a brief look at other Catholic organizations and institutions during this period. Mark your calendar and plan to come to this interesting historical presentation.

ADDICTION RECOVERY MINISTRY In celebration of the first anniversary of the Addition Recovery Ministry there will be an Anointing Mass for those struggling with addictions or in recovery. This Mass will be celebrated TODAY Sunday, February 9th at 3:00 p.m. in Madonna of Jerusalem Church – 201 9th St., Sharpsburg 15215. Following the Mass there will be refreshments at the John Paul I Center across from the church.

PARISH BULLETIN ONLINE You are invited to go to our parish website – olasmg.org – to find our bulletin, which is usually posted there by Thursday. If you would like to receive the bulletin sent directly to your email each week you can click “subscribe” and it will be emailed to you.

TRANSPORTATION TO MASS Hopefully if you are in need of transportation to any of the Masses at our two parishes that you will take seri- ously the invitation to call the parish office and we will try to arrange it. There are parishioners from each of our parishes going to the Masses between our parishes and we will seek to arrange transportation with them to get you to the Mass you prefer.

LITURGICAL MINISTERS NEEDED We are still in need of more Liturgical Ministers at our Masses – especially at the 8:00 a.m. and the 9:30 a.m. Masses at Immaculate Conception and also at the 4:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Angels. Ministers of Com- munion, Lectors and Altar Servers are needed. Training will be given to any parishioners who would like to volunteer for any of these ministries from our two parishes. Please send an email or call, either parish office, and one of the clergy team will get back to you.

PRAYER INTENTION At all the Masses at our two parishes there is the opportunity to offer your prayer intentions to be remembered at the Masses. At SMG there is a Book on the stand as you enter the inside center doors of the church and you are invited to list your intentions to be prayed for. At OLA there is a Prayer Intention Box on the table in the back of church and you are invited to place your intentions in the Box. The Book or the Box will be pre- sented at the altar at each of the Masses.

AUTOMATIC OFFERTORY PAYMENT A number of parishioners have inquired about setting up a monthly online payment of their Offertory Contri- bution. Several parishioners already use that option and it can be easily set up through your own bank. If you go to your bank and tell them that you would like to include your Parish in your Online Bill Paying, your bank can set that up so that a check will be sent each month to the Parish with the amount that you would like to donate. This simplifies your contributing in that you will not have to remember to find your envelope and write a check each week and it will be taken care of automatically by your bank and sent directly to the Par- ish. If you would like further information about this option for giving, please contact your own bank or you can call the Parish Office.
