Spiritual Reflection Jesus proclaims to his disciples, which includes us: “You are the light of the world.” What does Jesus means when he speaks of us as “the light of the world?” If we try to answer this from a very human perspective we can get puffed up in thinking that WE are very impor- tant, very bright, and very much called to let people bask in our light. However if we listen to what Jesus is saying and what the scriptures tell us about what sort of actions makes our light shine, than a very different image appears. In the first scripture reading from Isaiah we hear it said: “If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday.” It is in reaching out to those is need that our light shines, because our light is not our own, but rather we are ultimately called to reflect the LIGHT, who is Christ. Christ himself says: “Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and give glory to your heavenly Father.” We are not being asked to shine so that others can praise us but rather our action, in reflecting God’s light, will lead others to give our God the praise and glory.
