A legendary staple in the fabric of jazz, San Francisco based singer and HighNote recording artist MARY STALLINGS' bio reads like a Who's Who of jazz greats and prestigious festivals. For nearly half a century, listeners have enjoyed the silky, long-tone stylings of a woman of whom the New York Times says, “…perhaps the best jazz singer singing today…”.

Central PA Friends of Jazz Spring Concert Series - MARCH 25, 2018 3PM Ware Center, 42 N Prince St. Lancaster, PA Tickets are $25

Mary Stallings is a classic example of how it takes time, musical seasoning and living a full life to mature as a vocalist and to address a lyric properly. While youthful instrumentalists may have something to say, Stallings brings a lifetime of emotional intelligence that enables her to truly inhabit a lyric. Born and raised in San Francisco, the middle child of 11 siblings, Stallings started performing professionally before the age of 10 with her mother and two older sisters in a family gospel group. She got her first real taste of jazz at home, sitting in at rehearsals with her uncle, tenor saxophonist and bandleader Orlando Stallings. Mary’s career got off to an early start in the late ’50s and her supple voice landed her in rarified air: performing with such luminaries as , , , and the Montgomery brothers (Wes, Monk, and Buddy) in Bay Area night clubs. Perhaps Stallings’ best-known recording was the 1961 Cal Tjader Plays, Mary Stallings Sings which brought engagements in , and along with work up and down the West Coast. She spent a year in the late 1960s performing with , and toured South America with Gillespie’s band in 1965 & 1966. She has shared the bill with Joe Williams, Tony Bennett, Clark Terry, and Ella Fitzgerald and she enjoyed a successful three-year residency in the from ‘69-’72. After touring with the Basie orchestra, she devoted her time to raising her only child, R&B singer Adriana Evans. Stallings returned to full-time singing in the early 1980s and released I Waited for You on in 1990 with pianist . The album Spectrum followed with pianist & trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison, while she featured as the pianist on Manhattan Moods in1997. 2005’s Remember Love featured Geri Allen, who played & organ and severd as producer and arranger. Mary Stallings has been a frequent guest at the & the San Francisco Jazz Fest. In 2005 she appeared with Clark Terry at the Blue Note Jazz Club in NYC, the 2007 Savannah Music Festival and Jazz at ’s, “The Birth of Cool.” In 2010, Mary Stallings signed an exclusive agreement with New York-based, HighNote Records and her first recording, Dream (HCD 7212) was released in October of that year. Mary’s second HighNote recording, 2012’s Don’t Look Back, (HCD 7224) had Christopher Loudon proclaiming in JazzTimes magazine, “Stallings and …achieving the same sort of rare, supreme simpatico as Ella and Louis, or Sinatra and Riddle.” Don’t miss this rare appearance by a stellar artist!!

Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band almost 30 years ago. Ron Waters is the Director for the CPFJ Youth Band. There is no tuition fee and all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. The band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. All applicants are accepted without audition Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. A professional arranger, composer and trumpet player, he finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, JazzMobile and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interests. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument - cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in previous bands. COME JOIN THE FUN!! Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email at [email protected]
