The Lancaster Foundation’s ExtraOrdinary Give, a 24 hour charity marathon was held on Sheila Ross November 17th - our thanks to the Lancaster Foundation and to those who contributed! Office Manager ... Last year’s Fall Concert Series final concerts were very successful. In October, New Orleans trumpeter/ vocalist Jeremy Davenport brought his working quintet from the New CPFJ Board of Directors: . Orleans Ritz Carlton to the Ware Center in Lancaster and thoroughly entertained the audience with original renditions of jazz and standards - it was a very special afternoon. ... Dr. William Anderson November 12th at the High Center on Messiah College’s campus, our own Jonathan (Membership) Ragonese featured an eight piece woodwind ensemble, a quintet of the finest young Paul Bratcher musicians from New York City, and longtime WITF-TV & Radio personality Mike (President) Greenwald onboard as narrator for two large works with children in mind - Mr Pop Goes Richard Ebeling and Mother Goose & Other Tales. The Messiah College Jazz Ensemble opened the (Volunteers) program with a great set - Dr. Bill Stowman directing. Jonathan’s music was fantastic and Dr. Paul Haidet brilliantly played, but we did not have a very large audience for the event - perhaps too many (Newsletter) Mark Hunsberger of our regulars thought that it was for children only? Please try to attend as many of our events as you can - we always feature the finest music available and even though the program (Treasurer) was geared to appeal to the young, it was definitely challenging and entertaining fare. Waverly Parker ... (Secretary) On December 27th we hosted the annual Ron Waters Scholarship Fundraiser at Connor Rohrer Appalachian Brewery Co. in Harrisburg - our thanks to their kind staff for all the assistance (Student Representative) with planning and organizing this fun evening. It was a frosty night, but we had a good Mark Swartzbaugh turnout and raised the necessary funds to keep the scholarship program rolling. All of the (Marketing) funds raised go to and annual scholarship for area students who are attending music school Keith Thomas and to help get kids to our summer Jazz Camp. It’s not too late to donate - call the office or (Vice President & Concessions) go online NOW! Tim Thompson ... MILES DAVIS/ BARDUHN Miles Davis, back from Paris where he had recorded the music to Louis Malle’s film Lift To The Scaffold, added Cannonball Adderley’s alto to his quintet. John Coltrane’s cubist abstractions and Cannonball’s bluesy lyricism offered Miles the contrasts that he was looking for, while his rhythm section of Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones provided the “intensity of a Formula 1 racing car and the comfort of a limousine” for every tempo.

  • Jim Rotondi Trumpeter Jim Rotondi Began His Musical Studies at a Very Early Age
Jim Rotondi Trumpeter Jim Rotondi began his musical studies at a very early age. His mother, a piano teacher, encouraged Jim to begin playing the piano at age eight. He took up the trumpet at age twelve. In 1980 Jim graduated from Butte High School in Butte, Montana. He then attended North Texas State University, where he graduated with a degree in trumpet performance. While in Texas, Jim was awarded first place in the International Trumpet Guild's jazz trumpet competition for the year 1984. After college Jim began recording and touring internationally with the Ray Charles Orchestra. Immediately following this he commenced a six year tenure with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. During this time Jim also became a member of organist Charles Earland's quintet. He currently tours with his own group, as well as with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and Grammy-winner Toshiko Akiyoshi and the collective known as One For All, which features a front line of Eric Alexander and Steve Davis. Jim's extensive recording experience most recently includes the release of his fifth date as a leader, titled "Destination Up", for the Sharp Nine label following the successful release of four CDs on the Criss Cross Jazz label. He can also be heard on several of Charles Earland's Highnote Records releases, alongside saxophonist Eric Alexander, with whom Jim made his recording debut on Eric's Delmark release "Straight Up". Other recordings include saxophonist George Coleman's Octet, featuring Harold Mabern, as well as drummer Ray Appleton's Sextet, which features Slide Hampton, Charles McPherson, and John Hicks.

  • Diego Rivera Bio 2020
DIEGO RIVERA SAXOPHONIST - COMPOSER - ARRANGER ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF JAZZ SAXOPHONE - MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY “...his playing is carefully phrased and beautifully nuanced…” - Jazz Times A world-class musician, composer, arranger and educator, Diego Rivera has entertained audiences for over 20 years. Rivera is known for his muscular tone and unique blend of straight-ahead mainstream jazz fused with music inspired by his Latino background and heritage. He is a tenured Associate Professor of Jazz Saxophone at Michigan State University where he also serves as Associate Director of Jazz Studies. Rivera was born in Ann Arbor, MI and raised ‘just up the road’ in East Lansing, MI. Born into a Mexican- American family, his Chicano heritage has always been important to him and shaped his creative endeavors. His parents named him after the famed muralist, Diego Rivera. A trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts at a young age inspired him to make his own mark with the Saxophone rather than the brush. He attended Michigan State University where he studied with Andrew Speight, Branford Marsalis, Ron Blake and Rodney Whitaker. In 1999, he began his professional and touring career with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra on their Big Band ‘99 tour. Since that maiden voyage, he has performed concerts at the most prestigious venues and festivals across the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. He currently leads his own group, The Diego Rivera Quartet. Rivera has also toured with GRAMMY-Award winning vocalist, Kurt Elling, JUNO-Award winning Canadian Jazz Vocalist, Sophie Milman and The Rodney Whitaker Quintet. He is a member of the The Ulysses Owens Jr.

When she walked away with first place in the jazz world’s most prestigious contest, the buzz began almost immediately. If anything, it has intensified in the months leading up to the launch of her Mack Avenue Records debut, WomanChild. “She has poise, elegance, soul, humor, sensuality, power, virtuosity, range, insight, intelligence, depth and grace,” Wynton Marsalis asserts. “I’ve never heard a singer of her generation who has such a command of styles,” remarks pianist Aaron Diehl. “She radiates authority,” critic Ben Ratliff wrote in The New York Times in response to one of her post- competition performances, and a few weeks later his colleague Stephen Holden announced that “Ms. McLorin Salvant has it all…. If anyone can extend the lineage of the Big Three—Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald—it is this 23-year-old virtuoso.” Yet at almost every step of the way, McLorin Salvant has followed a different path from her peers.
