Alex Wolff

On the meet and Cyrus Hostetler’s school record:

“It’s a great day. I can’t believe that Cyrus just threw 83 meters. It was amazing. It is really exciting when you see your teammate beating a record. It’s great for the whole team and it gives all of us energy. I am so happy.”

On the season preparations: “We have trained hard the whole year, we have great coaching, and things are clicking right now. We had a meet last week. Then we will be competing against UCLA here at Hayward Field in a couple of weeks.”

On his goal for this year: “My goal is to stay healthy and throw far. We definitely have a team everyone needs to watch out for.”

Cyrus Hostetler

On his winning throw: “We extended my runway and I came out with a goal of throwing 70 meters. I came out and I just hit it. It felt like I didn’t even use my arm. I looked at Alex (Wolff) and I couldn’t believe it. I feel like I am on cloud nine right now, and I think this will set in sometime next week. I never expected this to happen this early in the season.”

On his goals: “I knew that there were a lot of fans that wanted me to throw again. We had the goal of going one, two, three today and it felt good for all three of us to take the victory lap. My goal is to be in the top three in the nation and to also stay healthy.”

On teammate Alex Wolff: “When Alex got his personal record, it got me pumped up and I wonder how I did it, but God is on my side.”

Mattie Bridgmon

On her performance: “I just wanted to come out and relax for the first two miles to see what I could do for the last mile. I felt fresh with a mile to go. The conditions were perfect for today’s race.”

Shadrack Biwott

On the goal: “Today my goal was to just go out there, have fun, and do my best. We wanted to run as a team for the first two miles and then each of us would do our own thing. It worked out great.”

Alex Kosinski

On her performance: “I wanted to go out and get a good time in the 1,500 and I wanted to work on my speed in the 800. In the 800 we went out slow and the pack slowed down so we were able to catch back up but the final 300 meters was tough.”

On her record: “It was nice to get a personal record and I have been feeling good.”

Rachel Yurkovich

On her performance: “Today was a little frustrating. I didn’t get the throw I was looking for. I have to remind myself that this is where I should be at this point in the year. It was my plan to take all of the throws and it was good practice in a live situation.”

On men’s : “It’s really easy to get caught up in men’s javelin. It’s hard not to think about the men and put it out of your mind when they make great throws like they did today. It’s really easy to get your adrenalin going to soon and it’s difficult to stay focused and not get drained.”

Zoe Buckman

On her performance: “There was a great crowd out there. I was a little disappointed in my performance, and there was a talented group out there that gave a good race. I was surprised I made the split that I did, I was expecting a slower split than that.”

Keshia Baker

On the win: “The coach told me to push the first 60 meters and it worked out perfectly. It’s the end of the indoor season, so I am really happy with my time today. I actually didn’t expect I would do so well. I am shocked. I have been working hard though and it’s paying off now. I was really happy to compete in front of the Eugene crowd and the weather is great. All that mattered today.”

Scott Sellers, Kansas State

On his win: “I was a little disappointed. I like to open the season with a win, but my technique was a little off. I am not too worried about that though. I have learned over the years that it takes time and it’s just the beginning of the season.”

On competing in Eugene: “The weather is beautiful. Yesterday was pretty cold, but I am always excited to come to Eugene. We have a lot of meets, we go to some places that are dead, but Eugene is always fun and supportive.”

Amber Purvis

On her performance: “I have been sick, and I did better than I expected. I wanted to come out to and break the school record and I knew my times would be fast. I felt like I could have given more in the 100, but I gave everything that I had in the 200.”

On the weather: “I was happy to have good weather because when the sun comes out I get juiced. I warm up better and stretch better when the sun comes out.”

Chad Barlow

On today’s race: “I didn’t feel tired at all during the race.”

On his goal for the year: “I would like to go under 46 seconds for the year. I hope to get into the mid 46 second range and then slowly work my way down below 46 seconds.”

On his performance in the 4x400 meter relay: “Coach told us to use the race as a work out, and compete. We got some challenges and when (Kansas State) came we just competed. Coach said not to go out there for time, just compete and that’s what we did. We waited till someone started to compete with us and it worked.”

David Klech

On the team: “Our whole group has been working really hard in practice. We are in our highest volume of training right now and it’s paying off. It was fun to just go out there and compete. We all had tough races earlier today and to get the win for Oregon really means a lot.”

Coach Dan Steele

On men of Oregon: “Today we saw a performance of the meet by Cyrus Hostetler. It was probably one of the best performances by a athlete ever at Hayward Field. He was terrific. I watched the javelin and I didn’t know if it was going to come down. It was a thrill. Alex Wolff threw over 70 meters, which on any other day is a big deal.” “The men did some very good things today. We tried to win the meet, but these kinds of meets are hard to win with the way the points are set up, and you can’t have too many slip-ups.”

On Purvis : “I think we are watching a star emerge. She is really impressive and she is only going to get better. She is a true freshman and she’s got a nose for the finish line.”

On women of Oregon: “The women had something to prove. They really wanted to win this meet. They believe they have got a great team and I agree with them. This team is really serious about winning everything they compete in. We are feeling very good about their progress. I think it’s going to be an enjoyable experience for everybody.”

Head Coach

On the team performance: “When you go after an indoor NCAA title you have to rest your athletes. It is important for us to take a deep breath and be careful not to overwork our athletes if we want to have a shot at an outdoor title.”

On Hayward Field: “There is not a better place to host an outdoor track meet. You see the students sitting in their section and we need to take this in and see the value.”
