Child Chair of American Security Policy, Department of Political Science, University of Calgary On 20 January 2008 Barak Obama enters the White House to face a wide array of very daunting domestic and foreign challenges. Domestically, he is confronted with a dire situation: a financial meltdown, a US economy sinking ever deeper into recession, rapidly rising unemployment, a housing market in near free fall, dysfunctional health- care, energy and infrastructure systems, and a budget deficit which looks to exceed a trillion dollars. Internationally, he assumes responsibility for two land wars, a global struggle against Islamist terrorist elements, the prospect of nuclear-armed rogue states (especially Iran), diminishing American influence and power, an international financial system in crisis, and, very recently, the intense fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, among a range of other security issues. Obama’s world is one full of problems and troubles. Obama’s activity during the transition period strongly suggests that his priority will be domestic problems rather than international issues. While he has remained relatively muted during the transition on international events such as the Mumbai terror attacks and the ongoing fighting between Israel- Hamas in Gaza, he has been very publicly active as President-elect in efforts to develop a massive stimulus package to be ready to sign as soon as possible after he assumes office. Reports on the stimulus plan make clear that Obama intends it to energize job creation through infrastructure investment, restore public confidence in the American economic system, kick-start a ©Centre for Military and Strategic Studies, 2009. -

HUMAN TRAFFICKING Findings • In its 2019 Trafficking in Persons Report, the U.S. State De- partment listed China as Tier III, which is a designation for governments who ‘‘do not fully meet the minimum standards [under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act] and are not making significant efforts to do so.’’ • Chinese anti-trafficking law remains inconsistent with inter- national standards in the UN Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children (Palermo Protocol), to which China is a State Party. Whereas the Palermo Protocol encompasses the exploitation of any individual, Chinese law addresses the selling of women and children, making it difficult to assess the scale of human trafficking in China as defined by international standards. • Women and girls from countries including Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, North Korea, Paki- stan, and Vietnam were trafficked into China for forced mar- riage and sexual exploitation. The demand for such trafficking is due in part to the sex ratio imbalance in China, a result of decades of government-imposed birth limits and a traditional preference for sons, as well as a lack of economic opportunity in countries of origin. • Chinese nationals were trafficked from China to other parts of the world, including the United States. Chinese sex workers were found working in illicit massage parlors across the United States. Because of their coercive nature, some of these cases may constitute human trafficking. • Continued restrictions on movement imposed by the hukou system contributed to the risks that internal migrant workers face in human trafficking. • The Chinese government continued to subject individuals to forced labor during pretrial detention and in administrative de- tention. -

1 David Freed JOUR S-599 Capstone 26 July 2017 STRONGER TOGETHER: GROUP REPORTING AND THE PUBLIC’S RIGHT TO KNOW By the spring of 1976, Don Bolles had grown weary of investigative reporting. The irregular hours. The phone threats. The fear of libel suits. The indifferent and sometimes timid editors. After more than a dozen years of exposing organized crime and corruption in Phoenix for the Arizona Republic, Bolles was relieved to be finally leaving the beat, moving on to cover the state legislature. That was the anguishing irony of it, his friends and fellow reporters would lament, that someone had murdered him when he was no longer a threat. Some said the 47-year-old journalist should have ignored the news tip that led to his assassination. But even as he sought to distance himself from his craft, Don Bolles and investigative reporting were inseparable. And so, when a man called whom he’d never met, claiming to have incriminating information about an Arizona congressman in bed with the mob, Bolles did what he always did with potential sources. He suggested they get together face-to- face. The caller said his name was John Adamson. The two men made plans to meet in the lobby of the upscale Hotel Clarendon (now the Clarendon Hotel and Spa) in downtown Phoenix. Adamson, however, never showed. After waiting 15 minutes, Bolles returned to his white Datsun 710 compact. As the father of four backed out of his parking space, six sticks of dynamite taped to the car’s frame under his seat 2 detonated. -

William Calley (convicted and then released by President Nixon to serve house arrest for two years) The My Lai Massacre (Vietnamese: thảm sát Mỹ Lai [tʰɐ̃ːm ʂɐ̌ːt mǐˀ lɐːj], [mǐˀlɐːj] ( listen); /ˌmiːˈlaɪ/, /ˌmiːˈleɪ/, or /ˌmaɪˈlaɪ/)[2] was the Vietnam War mass murder of between 347 and 504 unarmed civilians in South Vietnam on March 16, 1968, by United States Army soldiers of "Charlie" Company of 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 11th Brigade of the Americal Division. Victims included women, men, children, and infants. Some of the women were gang-raped and their bodies were later found to be mutilated[3] and many women were allegedly raped prior to the killings.[] While 26 U.S. soldiers were initially charged with criminal offenses for their actions at Mỹ Lai, only Second Lieutenant William Calley, a platoon leader in Charlie Company, was convicted. Found guilty of killing 22 villagers, he was originally given a life sentence, but only served three and a half years under house arrest.
