THE ORCHESTRA in BILBAO by Victor Barba Gomez
THE ORCHESTRA IN BILBAO by Victor Barba Gomez Last August 27th, the band played in Bilbao City situated in the North of Spain. It was the Festivities of the city, called ASTE NAGUSIA, and every day of the week were concerts in the city, in different stages and THE ORCHESTRA played in the main stage, in front of almost 8.000 people. This show was the main of the week, closing the Festivities. After the Fireworks, people were arriving to enjoy the wonderful sound of the guys that began at 12.00 in the night in a big stage with two screens. In charge of the sound was Dennis with the local crew. It was the first time that the band was playing in Bilbao, but not for Mik, who played in 1975 with ELO in his first tour in Spain. Before the sound check, the three vocalists Eric, Hux and Glen, were rehearsing together. While the band was in the rehearsals, some fans and public were approaching the stage to see the band, as a prelude of the massive attendance that later came to the show. There were press, TV cameras photographs, waiting the magic moment Opening the show with the intro and Twilight, soon the audience was handed over to the band’s songs. Glen, in Basque language, said hello to the attendance. The audience thanked this gesture. After Twilight, came All Over the World, R&R is King, Evil Woman, Sweet Talking Woman, Hold on Tight, Mama Belle, Showdown and Rockaria. Then was moment for the Intros, and Hux presented the members of the band. -
Simon Mcbride and Hugh Cornwell
Waterloo Street, St. Helens WA10 1PX www.citadel.org.uk Box Office: 01744 735436 Press Release: Tuesday 2nd July 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE This week at The Citadel Arts Centre, St Helens Simon McBride and Hugh Cornwell The Citadel Arts Centre will be welcoming Simon McBride on Thursday 4 July and Hugh Cornwell of the Stranglers fame on Saturday 6 July 2013. Predicted to be the next Irish blues guitar hero in the footsteps of Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore, former Young Guitarist of the Year Simon McBride has undeniable guitar artistry combined with a fine voice and a real knack for creating memorable hooks and great melodies. His latest CD Crossing The Line is a fiery amalgam of guitar skills, songcraft and character-soaked vocals, spinning tales of girls, gambling and corporate avarice. Recorded in Northern Ireland and The USA, mixing of the album was placed in the experienced hands of New York-based Peter Denenberg, the veteran producer and engineer whose CV takes in everyone from Deep Purple to the Spin Doctors and Robert Cray. Rewind to the early-’90s, and you didn’t have to squint to spot future greatness in the unassuming kid from Belfast, who picked up his first guitar at ten and eschewed formal lessons to bend his fingers around the music of Free, Jeff Beck and Hendrix. Aged 15, Simon won Guitarist’s hotly-contested Young Guitarist of the Year competition in a Wembley Conference Centre showdown, and at 16, he turned pro, leaving education behind to wow the world as a hired gun in projects than ranged from metal with Sweet Savage, to R&B and soul with ex-Commitments vocalist Andrew Strong. -

When I Was About Twenty and My Hormones Were
When I was about twenty and my hormones were raging still, I had a fleeting 'thing' about Sonja Kristina, the prog-rock diva who fronted Curved Air in her thigh-high boots. While never owning any of the albums, I studied at length photos of her on their sleeves and in the music press. The fascination was such that all I wanted was just to kiss Sonja - with no unbuttoning, fumbling at her bra-strap or manoeuvring her into, say, the romantic seclusion of a backstage broom cupboard. I wouldn’t have wanted to desecrate the purity of that once- in-a-lifetime moment with any undignified gropings as, ideally, every lingering split-second held us tighter in the same flow of feeling. Well, last May, I was opening for with the present-day Curved Air, led by Sonja, at the same South London auditorium where I’d likewise served It’s A Beautiful Day the previous summer. In the dusty half-light beyond footlights still being tested, I watched the group soundcheck, noting that all the essential elements of Sonja remained intact - not least of which were the industrial-strength stage presence, the stirring soprano and everything that captured my late adolescent heart. Indeed, the unquiet decades since ‘Back Street Luv’, Curved Air’s only Top Forty entry, fell away as I glimpsed briefly a profile once defined by a Top Of The Pops arc-lamp. Afterwards, amid the empty bottles, half-eaten food and further debris of dressing room hospitality, I achieved my ancient ambition via a chaste farewell embrace with Sonja Kristina. -
Freewheelin-On-Line Take Twenty Five
Freewheelin-on-line Take Twenty Five Freewheelin 223 The main feature of this month’s cover provides the final part of my Salvador Dalì trilogy. It is taken from a painting that the artist executed in 1929 and which he called ‘The Enigma of Desire – My Mother, My Mother, My Mother’. The most striking part of this painting is surely the lion’s head with it’s bared teeth and angry eyes. Apparently, prior to completing this study, Dalì had been reading a lot of Freud who wrote that the appearance of a wild animal, a lion for instance, represented sexual urges that a person was afraid of letting go. The matters of sexual urges and of letting go abound in the acts of conception and subsequent child birth and perhaps Dalì was thinking about the role of his mother in those acts when he set about this painting. In the foreground of this cover is the amazing sculpture ‘Alison Lapper Pregnant’ by Marc Quinn that will soon be pondered over by thousands of visitors to Trafalgar Square. Forget the triumphs of that famous Master of War on the top his column, this sculpture represents a real struggle and triumph in the face of human adversity. On the right, Dylan looks over at Alison’s condition and wonders what it would be like to get back to that state of pre-birth security inside the womb where what’s real and what is not really doesn’t matter. Intent on this journey, Dylan is just about to join the ultimate Time Traveler who will take him where ever he wants to go, although I doubt that the Doctor will permit smoking inside his Tardis. -
