TEN QUESTIONS WITH...

1) How long have you been involved with Counties Manukau Cricket? Probably about 25 years as player, scorer & umpire. 2) Your nickname is Magoo, how did you get this nickname? It was given to me by the guys at Browns Road Indoor cricket as I had a habit of not looking where I was going & crashing into the umpiring stands! I used to have big glasses that added to the nickname. 3) Who did you play for and were there any highlights? I started playing for Manurewa when I left school so about 1985- 86. I was a keeper so a highlight was taking 6 catches in a Senior A game against Papakura. Still got the ball somewhere! Only played a couple of games for the Prems but did open the batting once against the Ross brothers!! I wasn’t first out either, B-

Bic! Mark Downie still reminds me of the weird helmet I wore in this game. 4) How long have you been umpiring? I always enjoyed being involved in the game & was often out fairly quickly so I usually spent a bit of time as a player-umpire. I had said to Joe once that I would give it a go one day. I started umpiring instead of playing in about 2001 & did my first Fergus Hickey in 2003. 5) As a long serving member of CMCA can you name the best CMCA XI of all time (according to you)? I’m going to select a one-day team & a two day team if you don’t mind. One-day. We have always had a lot of all-rounders in Counties so my one-day side has a lot of them! 1) Kevin Farrell (keeper) 2) Simon Andrews 3) Mark Downie () 4) Sean Lambly 5) Richard Faust 6) Tim Hartland 7) Jono Hickey 8) Ian Butler 9) Patrick Hartland 10) Craig Ross 11) Scott Guthrie

Two-day. I have selected a team from only those I’ve seen play for Counties so guys like Richard Halliwell, John Wright, John Gibson, Jack Snell & Ron Wright miss out. Maybe we could send out voting papers for the best all time team!! 1) Simon Andrews 2) Simon Peterson (captain)

3) Bryan Spragg 4) Mark Downie 5) Richard Faust 6) Scott Purdie 7) Ian Butler 8) Daryl Tuffey 9) Mark McMillian (keeper) 10) Simon Doull 11) Mo McKinnon

6) What attracted you to the statistical side of cricket? I had done scoring at school and was interested in the way cricket stats told a story. I became the scorer for Counties in about ’93. I did that job till about ’98, including scoring a test match at Seddon Park. There was a lack of historical records for Franklin, Counties etc and cricket is a game that has a rich & varied past. We need to honour & learn from those that have been before us so I decided to start collecting the stats together. I’m lacking a lot but every now & then I find something that adds to the overall picture. Anything helps so if anyone has anything, please forward it on to me. 7) Do you have any advice for someone thinking of becoming an umpire? Spend time umpiring your own team or your children’s. Learn the laws too. I think it makes you a better player if you know them. Get hold of one of the current umpires as we have a lot of stuff to help learn the laws. Come along to our meetings & listen to the likes of Tony Hill talk about his experiences. Above all ensure you relax & enjoy doing it 8) What do you do in your spare-time? When I’m not doing cricket stats, umpiring or playing business house you mean!! I have two children that keep me busy every other weekend. I’m a computer geek so I muck around on

I like watching movies, listening to a wide variety of music & occasionally playing poker. There is usually a beer or two somewhere around as well!! During the winter I am involved at Ardmore Marist rugby helping out the Pressies & the committee and I support the mighty Counties Manukau Steelers. There are also the Chiefs (especially when they play the Hurricanes!!), the All Blacks, the Breakers and the Warriors to watch over a few amber liquids! 9) What are your three pet hates and likes in cricket? Likes 1) Having the best seat in the house 2) Getting together with old & current team mates to swap a few lies 3) Humour. Hate is too strong a word but I don’t like sledging that gets too personal or people that don’t realise that cricket is a wonderful fun game & take themselves & the game too seriously. 10) Can you tell us one thing that we don’t know about you? I was the DJ at Growers stadium for the Steelers for two years
