The CMCA Premier Cricket Preview for the 2009/10 Season. KARAKA CC Welcome to the CMCA Premier Cricket Preview for the 2009/10 season. KARAKA CC- Page 2 MANUKAU CITY CC- Page 3 PAPAKURA CC- Page 4 PUKEKOHE METRO CC- Page 5 | WAIUKU CC- Page 6 WEYMOUTH CC- Page 7 Sponsor Acknowledgement- Page 8 | ONE DAY LAST SEASON: 4th/6 TWO DAY LAST SEASON: 2nd/6 PLAYERS IN: PLAYERS OUT: D Simpson | SQUAD: T McDonald, D Power, M Cole, S Kett, A Borrie, D Pearce, M Neale, S Beare, O Redwood, A Carroll, C Franks, M Wood, M Daas, H Wark, S Andrews, A Frost, T Ketels. Karaka should be boosted for the 2009/10 season with the news that all rounder Simon Andrews (pictured) will be available most weeks (work permitting) after being released by Northern Districts. Simon picked up the Northern Districts Minor Association player of the year last year for his performances in the CMCA men’s side which shared the Brian Dunning Cup. This will go a long way in boosting both the batting and bowling resources of the Club. One of Karaka’s main contributors last season was all rounder David Simpson, whose 23 wickets earned him a call up to the CMCA Senior side. Unfortunately for Karaka, David has moved to the South Island for work and won’t be available when the new season gets underway. This loss will further emphasise the importance of fast scoring batsman Simon Beare. Simon was recently | overseas where he has been playing and working in England. Simon was the 3rd top run scorer in Premier cricket last term with 396 and also took 19 wickets. Last season’s Captain Sam Kett continues to be a consistent performer at Club level where last year he took 21 dismissals behind the stumps and scored 255 runs. One to look out for is Matt Cole, the promising batsman who was part of the Northern District Under 15 side last year. Karaka last enjoyed one day success in 2004/05 and were two day champions in the 1997/98 season. With Simon Andrew’s match winning capabilities they should be serious contenders this season. | ONE DAY LAST SEASON: 5th/6 TWO DAY LAST SEASON: 3rd/6 | PLAYERS IN: PLAYERS OUT: Richie Faust SQUAD: F Allen, D Simpson, D Sutherland, B Read, J Hickey, L Glen, A Herwells, I Burrows, B Simpson, L Kramer, J Samuel, D Giles, A Herwells (JNR), A Horwach Manukau are much unchanged for the new season, with the only casualty being Richie Faust who is to continue playing his cricket in Australia. Richie will be a big loss to the Memorial Park based club as he was the only Manukau batsman to register a century last year with his 109* against Pukekohe Metro in the one day competition. Jono Hickey and Ashwyn Herwells have both recently been named in the New Zealand Under 19s High Performance Unit and Manukau will be hoping this feeds back into their club form. Despite being unavailable for most of the season, Ashwyn managed to take 20 wickets and score 254 | runs in the 2008/09 Premier Season. Jono was named ND Under 19s captain last year and also spent time working with the black caps. Brendon Read will lead the bowling attack and will be looking to carry on where he left off last year where he was named as Counties ‘B’ best bowler after taking 9 wickets at 15.2. Manukau last won the two day competition in 2007/08 and were one day champions in 2001/02. If they can make the most of their rep players they could be contenders again this time around. | ONE DAY LAST SEASON: 6th/6 TWO DAY LAST SEASON: 6th/6 | PLAYERS IN: S Allison, N Fitzgerald, H PLAYERS OUT: M Ford, H Keast & Dan Gibson, M Gurrey, A Niterl, S Watt & N Richards Williamson SQUAD: A Abraham, S Allison, G Botha, N Fitzgerald, S Gadsdon, H Gibson, T Greig, M Gurrey, S Hardy, J Housham, R Lane, G Mudford, A Niterl, D Shine, B Strydom, J Sutherland, S Watt, N Williamson, S Wood Papakura’s young squad had a tough season last year, where they finished last in both competitions. However, the extra year’s Premier cricket should stand them in good stead as they look to climb the ladders this time around. 17 year old opening batsman Ashley Abraham forced his way into the CMCA Senior side at the end of the season after a series of strong performances for Papakura and Northern Districts Under 17s. One of the success stories of last season was Shane Gadsdon, another 17 year old who gained higher honours in 2008/09. Shane (pictured) had previously played in | the Senior A side, but last year was first choice wicket keeper for CMCA which lead to him being selected for Northern Districts Knights for two first class games. During the winter months Shane has been involved with the New Zealand elite performance squad. Anthony Niterl could be the one to look out for during 2009/10. He will shortly return from England where Justin Langer had arranged for some trials with English Counties after a successful spell in Western Australia. Another to watch is Nick Fitzgerald. The former NZ U19 Wicket/Keeper batsman is returning home after spending three years at teacher training college in Otago. Not since 1991/92 has Papakura won a Premier Cricket title, when they won the WH Taylor Shield for two day cricket. This talented bunch of youngsters could be the ones to end the drought at Mclennan Park. | st st ONE DAY LAST SEASON: 1 /6 TWO DAY LAST SEASON: 1 /6 | PLAYERS IN: PLAYERS OUT: P Hartland SQUAD: A Somani, M Sweetman, K Raisbeck, S Wilkinson, M Zydenbos, M Wilson, T Hartland, M Downie, R Dennison, J Wilkinson, N Grala, H Chaagan, D Smith, M Hunt, K Watson, M Chaagan, M Singh The 2008/09 season saw Pukekohe Metro take out every prize available, being crowned Twenty20, One Day and Two Day Champions. This year promises to be more of a test as influential skipper Paddy Hartland has decided to carry on his travelling overseas. The gap in the spin bowling department is one that should be easily filled at Bledisloe Park. Last year Sam Wilkinson spent most of the season behind the stumps but his off spin could figure prominently in this campaign. Another youngster to watch is spin bowler Mat Singh. The 15 year old broke a whole host of records for CMCA Under 15s last year and carried this onto Northern Districts where he took 27 wickets at National Tournament. | Tim Hartland has an excellent year last time around, scoring 382 runs in all competitions and took 17 crucial wickets as Pukekohe Metro dominated the Premier Grade. Veteran All Rounder Adil Somani showed his class in all formats of the game last year, being a key performer for Pukekohe Metro and the CMCA Men’s side. Pukekohe Metro will be led this time around by batsman Mark Downie. He will be assisted by Mitchell Sweetman who had outstanding season last year where he took 31 wickets and scored 262 runs. This together with some match winning performances for CMCA earned him a place in the Northern Districts ‘A’ side. With the experience the team possesses, Pukekohe Metro remain the team to beat. The test will be when some of their key players are on representative duties with CMCA. | | ONE DAY LAST SEASON: 3rd/6 TWO DAY LAST SEASON: 4th/6 PLAYERS IN: A Gooley, S Ruddell, K Lloyd, PLAYERS OUT: J Martin, M Eggleson, D P Richardson Seaward, B Morey SQUAD: S Guthrie (C), G Wilcock (VC), R Ruddell, A Panchia, K Patel, S Patel, A Gooley, S Kennedy, S Ruddell, K Lloyd, P Richardson, M Aspin Despite being short on numbers for the 2008/09 season, Captain Scott Guthrie (pictured) led his side to mid table finishes in both forms of the game. Scott’s 26 wickets and 343 runs earned him the Club Cricketer of the Year award ahead of CMCA teammate Mitchell Sweetman by just 1 point. Matt Eagleson was also a notable performer last time around scoring 330 runs in all competitions. His decision to return to club cricket in Auckland means Waiuku will be relying on some new young blood to deliver the goods in the | premier grade. This comes in the form of Stuart Ruddell, Keegan Lloyd and Petelo Richardson who all make the step up from Waiuku College. Skipper Guthrie was disappointed to lose pace bowler Jason Martin to Weymouth and that will leave a big void in the bowling armoury. Evergreen seamer Grant Wilcock successfully combined his playing duties with managing the CMCA ‘B’ side last season and will be hoping for similar results for 2009/10. Another leaving Massey Park is Bayden Morey who will be playing Rugby overseas. You only have to look back to the 2006/07 season for Waiuku’s last piece of silverware when they took won the one day competition. They were last two day champions in the 1999/00 season. If Guthrie can bring his new players on this time around they should remain competitive at the top of Premier Cricket. | nd th ONE DAY LAST SEASON: 2 /6 TWO DAY LAST SEASON: 5 /6 | PLAYERS IN: J Martin, T Sealey- Fisher, S PLAYERS OUT: M Gurrey Singh, D Bruce SQUAD: V Blanchard, T Sealey- Fisher, M Henderson, D Hellyer, K Blanchard, T Clarke, R v Elling, S Davidson, A Vodnala. S Singh, J Martin, D Bruce, M Hawkins, P O’Neil Weymouth made great progress last season under the Captaincy of CMCA opening batsman Vaughan Blanchard, where they were runners up in the one day competition as well as the Inder Lynch Twenty20.

I guess the summer of 2019-20 will always be remembered as the season that ended early due to Covid- 19. Looking back now at March it all happened so quickly and it was with a sense of great disappointment that we had to cancel all our end of year prizegivings, miss out on the last two weekends of cricket and lock up the Indoor Training Centre for all of April. Now we can only hope that everything has settled down enough to allow us to enjoy a full season in 2020-21 and that all our members are healthy and safe. However, it was still another great year for Suburbs.

It would be fair to say that everyone approached the summer with great uncertainty and a sense of trepidation. Covid-19 had forced the country into lock down for a significant part of the winter and the general consensus was that there more lock downs were likely to follow over the summer. Suddenly running a cricket club was much more complicated with contingency and safety plans required before the season even started. No-one was sure what registrations would look like and the forecast was that traditional funding streams would not be available.
